Beauty is only skin deep

New images of Mazda's MX-5 Superlight Concept have hit the web.

Designed to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the MX-5/Miata, the concept features a racing-inspired exterior that lacks a windscreen. Other changes include a revised front end, integrated air scoops (that serve as roll-over bars), a streamlined profile, and a Mazdaspeed dual exhaust system.

Tipping the scales at 2,195 pounds (995 kg), the MX-5 is powered by an anemic 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine with 126 hp. While this likely results in stellar fuel efficiency, the concept reluctantly accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 8.9 seconds.

Look for more information to be released when the concept officially debuts at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

I have a lot of respect for the mx-5/miata, and I get that's it's about the driving experience not just numbers. ...But why don't they put a much higher modified version of the 2.0L from the MX-5...?! Or a dimmed down version of the RX-8's rotary? 126HP is pretty dismal, I would hate to see the torque numbers. Just my 2 Cents...

The only problem is how hideous that guy who's driving looks with all those helmets and stuff and oh, the engine, a 1.8 only, why not the 2.0L or a Rotary, but if they put a rotary in it they might have to name it as RX5

It would have been a cool concept years ago. Pininfarina Enjoy (2003) took on as a radical elise concept 6 years ago. or even the gallardo concept s (2005) btw, it's superlight already and 0-100kph is 8.9s ???

this car's problem is:like other cars like SLR and that Crazy Veritas you should drive with helmet and driving with helmet means this car should be really fast but it is not,my Civic is more powerful and quicker and still i don't use helmet.the whole idea is its problem.

it is good that mazda is exploring ways to make their cars lighter and getting the perfect balance. what the mx-5 seriously need is a lot more torque or a hot version. why don't they just install their 2.3 liter turbo engine from the mazda3 mps?

Engine is tooo weak. I've expected at least 6 s from 0 to 100 km/h. Please Mazda improve it if you're going to launch this car

I like it, but it's pointless, especially with this weak engine. The mx-5 has never been fast and I don't see it happen that the next mx5 has more than 180 hp.
