Spies have captured new shots of, what appears to be, the 2011 BMW 1 Series turbo or 135i hatchback.  The five-door can be seen with two exhaust pipes, each on opposing sides of the bumper, a hallmark for BMW's biturbo models.

As the spy photographer points out, this is a new design point for the 1-Series.  Although other versions of the car have dual exhaust, the pipes are coupled on one side.

Previous spy photos suggest the car may be available as an all-wheel drive, possibly with BMW's xDrive system.  This had been due to the presence of a Kistler RoaDyn sensor system often used to test drive systems.

The current batch of photos shows more detail around the grille, and some more details around the larger air intakes.  The wheels are a nice touch, but we think the photographer may have been huffing exhaust fumes when he said, "Maybe BMW should offer the car in this psyco paint and with matte black alloys, it's looking better and better every time we see it."

Popular belief is that the 2011 BMW 1-Series turbo hatch will hit the market in the second quarter of 2011.  Convertible and coupe units could follow by the end of that year.

I'm not sure what's on with BMW but their overlapping evolutions of the same platform is darn confusing to say the least. Who has given the 1 series a serious thought anyway? I think the Focus/Golf duo have got the market covered. BMW could rather invest their skills on advancements in diesel engineering & vehicle design.

Which they already have done. BMW diesel engines are among the best right now, and with new body style to the 7 Series, it's only a matter of time before they redesign the 3 and 5, and ultimately the 1. And we know BMW is not afraid to jump into other markets. Look at the X6. Look at the 5 Series GT. They wouldn't be going any of this if they thought they were going to lose money. They're extremely smart, don't underestimate them.

WTF? Not heard of the 135i my friend? There's not one Golf, Focus that has RWD, a straight 6, twin turbo'd 3 litre engine. And yeah, even if they did I'd rather drive a beemer anyways after owning numerous VW's. And at sub 5 secs to 100km p/h it'll eat whatever RS or Scirroco R / GTI R comes it's way.

i am a big fan of the rear-wheel drive 1-series, still a great car apart from its hard ride and cramped rear space. i just wish that they could produce a medium revving 2-liter turbocharged straight four with manual or the optional twin clutchgearbox - 220bhp with 300Nm of torque - an ideal way to put it against the golf gti, and their front-wheel drive cooper s has less than 190bhp. spiritual successor for the much loved 2002ti? let's call it the 120ti

YES!!! lol you wouldn't believe how many people think the 120i competes with the A3 2.0T and GTI.

Hard ride? Harsher than a GTI? Doubt it. You'll always have a hard ride if you want good handling characteristics. Can't have one without the other unless it's a really crap suspecsion setup, and that's kia, not BMW. My GTI with Eibach Pro kits springs sends every inch of road surface up my ass - which I like immensely.

@Decypha: of course the Beemer competes with the A3 and the Golf. Any buyer in this market will weigh up the pros and cons of each before deciding. On the BMW. Maybe.

If they made this available in the US, I would buy one yesterday.

I agree, the current 1 series is a great car. It does need more powerful engines on the lower range though. And now with the HPI direct injection tech of BMW and the small/twin-scroll turbos around they can do it better than anyone else. I'm waiting for it.

This looks like blown up z4. And what's with the googly tail lights? Doesn't Toyota have lights like these? I think this could be mini crossover.

It could be the new petrol four-cylinder single turbo unit...
