Hyundai has begun taking pre-launch orders for the new Sonata (aka the i40 in Europe) in their domestic market of Korea.

As these new leaked photos show, the 2010 Sonata adopts Hyundai's new "fluidic sculpture" design language. Boasting a "four-door coupe" appearance and a complex overly styled grille, the new Sonata will attempt to establish an even greater foothold in the automotive marketplace.

While details are scarce - the car won't be officially unveiled until September 10th - Hyundai has confirmed the Sonata will be outfitted with a six-speed automatic transmission and a 2.0-liter Theta II petrol engine. The car will also offer a variety of new features including a panoramic glass sunroof, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, and a push-button starting system.

Look for more details to be released in the coming days.

Hyundai Motor Company is ready to start taking orders tomorrow for its all-new Sonata, codenamed YF, ahead of the car's official launch Sept 10th in the Korea domestic market. In replacing the NF Sonata which was launched in Sept. 2004, Hyundai decided to retain the Sonata name as the mid-size car has been Korea's perennial best-seller.

The new Sonata is fitted with a 6-speed automatic transmission and delivers gratifying performance through its 2-liter Theta II gasoline engine. Delivering 12.8 kilometers per liter, it achieves the highest fuel economy in its segment. In addition, safety has been upgraded with Vehicle Dynamic Control now supplied as a standard feature.

*VDC : Improves the safety of a vehicles stability by detecting and minimizing skids.

The overall comfort has been enhanced through a variety of new technologies and premium specifications such as a panoramic sunroof, gear shift paddles attached to the steering wheel, and a push-button starting system.

The rendering preview features coupe like body style and exudes a dynamic image. The front side communicates an image of strength through a wide radiator grill and sharp-edged headlamp.

The flowing coupe-like lines of the new Sonata eloquently express Hyundai's "fluidic sculpture" design language, a new design direction that will play a pivotal role in enhancing the brand. Hyundai is confident that the new Sonata, equipped with the companys latest technologies, will continue the long string of successes earned by Sonata over the years.

Since the launch of the very first generation Sonata in October 1985 in Korea, 4.45 million units of Sonata have been sold worldwide.

In 2004, Sonata earned the highest ranking in J.D. Power's Initial Quality Survey in the Entry Midsize Car category.

Now this is truly original and stunning design from Hyundai. The interior is superior and the car itself is just so sleek and elegant. Hard to believe how upscale the Sonata has moved compared to the current generation. Great job Hyundai on this one.

And now, let the misguided comments come from angry, disillusioned individuals about how this car looks like every other car on the market.

I love this. Sensational! One of the most beautiful designs from anyone in a long time.

Hopefully sharing a common platform/chassis with the genesis family so they don't have one arm tied behind their back.

I won't call this car a beauty, but it looks really good I think. Might be my new everyday car if there is AWD version, but I suspect there won't.

Now finally Hyundai is trying to have its own signature grille & design language like its sister Kia which is a good thing. Let them distance themselves from the boring Toyota/Lexus bandwagon & I'm sure they have a winner!

The fruit of having a satellite design studio in Europe is very well evident in their design evolution.

You got to hand it to the Koreans. They've really come a long way. this ain't bad looking. Tired of reading all of the comments of people calling them copy cat designs. I think the sales numbers speak for themselves.

The design sketch depicts a great looking curvaceous 4 door coupe a la MB 500 CLS.

The actual car however looks boringly Japanese with some creases added on the side at the last minute in an effort to avoid a plagiarism lawsuit.

the exterior is nice and not boring like most midsize cars... although it does look a bit mercedes cls-ish from the side. but the interior, though beautiful, oh god is just a mixture of design ideas from other companies:

the lexus-style air vents:

the acura/honda-like gauges:

the infiniti/nissan nav/infotainment system:

and the volvo-hvac controls:

high quality it may look, yes, but original it is not....

HANG On... So it is OK for HYUNDAI to have this "Happy" Grille, BUT NOT For Mazda, all Hyundai have done is copy Mazda's Front and added some Plastic Chrome... What a bunch of Hypocrites, including Motoring Journalists!!

The difference is the styling that surrounds the grill. Hyundai have spiced it up. Mazda did nothing. I'm willing to bet we will see more cars with similar lines/design directions arriving soon too. Thank you EU.

The grille is rather over-done for my liking, but Hyundai is on a roll.

This is so different for Hyundai, unlike anything ive ever seen from Korea; its amazing.

I think looks wise it doesn't fail. But the proof of the pudding is in the tasting, so driving this alongside its competitors may reveal substandard comfort and low quality cabin. I'm saving my money for the next generation 5 series which will in my mind blow apart the competition for value, build quality, driving dynamics, engineering and comfort. As for this lesser premium segment, the Honda Accord will take some beating.

If they price it competively which I am sure they will... Accord and Camry WILL have hard time competiting.
