BMW executives have told the MINI plant in Oxford that two new models are to be built there. Speaking during a visit to BMW Group UK operations Dr.Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management at BMW AG, confirmed both vehicles will be based on the low-slung two-seat MINI Coupé Concept and a second concept that will be unveiled for the first time at Frankfurt Motor Show on 15 September.
"The production of the two new MINI models is very good news for Oxford, and for the UK car industry," Business Secretary Lord Mandelson said. "It is a demonstration of BMW's long term commitment to the UK as it celebrates its 50th birthday this year. British drivers have had a long love affair with the MINI and I'm sure that this will continue for many years to come."
It may be quite early to speak of powertrains but speculation is that no less than the 1.6-litre turbo found in the current John Cooper Works models will be the plant in use. The engine produces 155kW (211hp) in its current form. We saw with the previous-generation supercharged MINI GP that more power is possible from the little unit so it may well be more.
Dr. Juergen Hedrich, Managing Director of MINI Plant Oxford, said: "The fact that Plant Oxford will be building these exciting new models shows the high level of flexibility of the plant and its associates. The MINI family has a bright future."
