BMW Vision EfficienctDynamics Concept Spotted - new 3D animation video added

Caught in the flesh

A Car and Driver reader has spotted BMW's Vision EfficienctDynamics Concept at BMW Welt in Munich.

Set to be officially unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the EfficienctDynamics Concept features futuristic styling that garnered an 83% approval rating by WCF readers. That's a good thing since several reports have indicated that the VED Concept previews BMW's post-Bangle styling direction.

As we have previously reported, the Vision EfficienctDynamics Concept blends M-like performance with stellar fuel economy and reduced emissions. In order to accomplish this bold task, BMW outfitted the VED Concept with a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbodiesel engine and a full hybrid powertrain with two electric motors. Positioned on the front and rear axles, the electric motors channel a total of 262 kW (356 hp) and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque to the ground.

In terms of performance, the VED Concept is expected to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.8 seconds before hitting an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). What's even more astonishing is the fact that the Vision EfficienctDynamics Concept consumes just 3.76 liters/100 km in the EU test cycle (75.1 mpg), while emitting 99 grams of CO2 per km.

Power comes from a lithium-polymer battery that has the gross storage capacity of 10.8 kWh. Thanks to the advanced battery, the VED Concept has a range of 31 miles in the all-electric mode while the overall range is approximately 431 miles.

Besides relying on the diesel engine to charge the battery, the VED features Brake Energy Regeneration and a traditional plug-in charging system. When connected to a standard EU power outlet, the battery is fully recharged in two and a half hours. If it's connected to a rapid charger, charging times drop to 44 minutes.

If you look it up on BMW's website in one of the descriptions of the car it calls it "Near production ready". Now I don't know how ready they mean but I'm ready to put my deposit down.
