Last week we caught a glimpse of the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG wagon doing some late-evening testing on a German highway. Now, we get to the see E63 wagon in all its daylight glory, doing its final workout at Nürburgring before its debut at the Frankfurt motor show in a couple of weeks.

Not much camouflaging going on here and we've already seen the E63 AMG sedan. The wagon, for obvious reasons, has a different set of tail lamps, with LED lights, and may have a slightly altered rear bumper from the sedan model.

This 'T-modell', as it is called in Germany, is meant to match other sport wagons from arch-competitors BMW or Audi. AMG has promised improved performance through weight-reduction and better engine management, therefore, comparing horsepower figures will not be enough to judge it vis-a-vis the other premium brands's offerings. That will require a track.

But power is considerable. The E63 AM wagon will come with a 6.3 liter (6208 cc) V8 engine, naturally aspirated, churning out a resounding 525 hp (518 bhp) with a Dutch-windmill-like 630 Nm of torque. The 7-speed AM Speedshift MCT transmission, borrowed from the SL 63 AMG, provides for the smoothest possible channeling of power.

The E63 AMG wagon will takes its bow soon at Frankfurt. It is expected to go on sale later in the year.

Is it just me or is this car completely pointless? Even if money is no problem, why would anyone want a wagon with a massive engine like this one??

I have always wondered the same. Also all these luxury wagons just uglifies(if it's a word) the sedans.

it's still less pointless than... say... a ml63, x5m, x6m, cayenne turbo, and the like...

why buy an AMG wagon? well, the look on the corvette driver's face when you smoke him off the line with three kids in the back and rover in the tailgate. check this out:

McNamara68, exactly.

Also, fast wagons are always cooler than their sedan counterparts.

Great video McNamara68! Just gotta love that engine. Loads of torque to get it off the line and has the horsepower to keep it moving on the highways. Plus the added bonus of a great soundtrack.

Because somebody can reach they school kids if they miss there bus or reach work late or somebody can have drag race with the M5 estate. Anyways, this is better looking E63 amg than the saloon version.

I guess it is a personal choice but I've always thought that sedans looked ugly because of the trunk sticking out the back. There is definitely an added cool factor to these super-wagons...which my German collegue tells me is sort of a status symbol.

YUP, I'm even more convinced now, this DOES look better than the sedan & 2-door versions ( hard and soft top, as spied on WCF)
