More leaks on the upcoming Hyundai Sonata. The newest pics are published here after having made their way via several Korean forum sites.

The 2011 Sonata is now expected to come with the i40 moniker in Europe. Part of the conversion of most Hyundai models to a numerical naming system in order to make Hyundai more, well, European.

What can be said about the styling? Well, it certainly aims to compete as a sedan/coupe, given its Mercedes CLS-like design. It will be up to consumers and critics to decide whether the design matches or merely mimics the Sonata/i40's European competition.

Under the hood will be the 2.4 liter Theta II engine with GDI (direct-injection) technology expected to churn out about 200 hp. A 2.0 liter petrol/gasoline engine will also be available in the Sonata range.

For Europe and Korea there will also be a 2.2 liter 'R' diesel with an impressive 204 hp that meets Euro 5 emissions standards. The North American market may see a Lambda V6 Sonata with about 250 hp.

Transmissions available will be a 6-speed manual or automatic. Hyundai will also be offering a slew of premium-level options including a panoramic glass roof, stop-start technology and paddle shifts on the steering wheel.

The new Sonata is scheduled to debut on September 10th. It goes on sale in Korea in October and will be released in the North American and European markets early in 2010.

Unlike any other numerical automotive naming system, this one actually makes sense.

Yeah? So, when Audi names their cars A3,4,6... or bmw's 3,5,7 series, you don't see any correlation between number value and car size?!

So the 'i' in i40 stands for idiotproof?

Now this is one sharp design. Yes I can agree with all the others that it is not very original but it is a great interperetation of the 4 dr coupe styling that other manufacturers have been making. I am guessing that this will come in at a very affordable price point which will give those who want this type of styling yet could not have afforded it before the option now to have it. Kudos to Hyundia for this.

I really don't like Hyundai and Kia pushing the envelope and putting out all these beautiful designs and increasing their quality. It's almost like they want to sell cars and increase marketshare or something.... Crazy.

I think this is a good design overall. Kudos, Hyundai. Let's see how it drives...

Good design but why can't the Hyundai designers be original for a change. It is clearly a Audi and BMW in one design. Nicely executed though, barring the front which has always been an issue with Hyundai.

Blah blah blah .... All cars share aspects of other car design, you can see a bit of any car in any other. Given these things are on the drawing board for so long, who's to say BMW and Audi didn't steal design clues from Hyundai!!! Brand snobs always seem to imply that "budget" cars copy "premium" cars ... maybe its a bit both ways!!! Hyundai is on the way up, like it or not, just as toyota was 30 years ago!!

In the actual design market, this car has the looks !! If it will be like this, i see big trouble for all the big producers .. on this segment. The price will be very competitive, as we already know from Hyundai and the quality is already much improved - see the I20, I30, Cee'D etc. Well done Hyundai !!
