A new video featuring the rear-engined Ferrari 458 Italia was released today.  The second promotional spot has Pininfarina president Paolo Pininfarina talking about the vehicle's style, and how it augments the car's performance.

Also, the company released 11 new photos of the car on the road, and some details about the available features.

In a previous video, Ferrari executives Dany Bahar and Roberto Fedeli discussed the supercar's ability to reach 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds on its way up to a 325 km/h top speed.  The power comes from a naturally aspirated 4.5-liter V8 that uses a hefty 13.7 liters of fuel per 100 km.

Although Pininfarina says the car has a "rear engine in view," it appears to be mounted at the front of the back-end, so to speak, bordering on a mid-mounted classification.  If this is the case, the car could have an interesting weight distribution that allows for a solid off-the-line performance without sacrificing handling.

Whether or not the 458 Italia's handling will match that of the F430 remains to be seen.

Every part of the car, from the mouth to the side fins to the rear air outlets are built to improve the car's aerodynamics.  Pininfarina says, "All the design choices are driven by aerodynamics, but the final result is very light and essential."

Indeed it does.  The body helps to generate 365kg of downforce.

Ferrari also plans to roll out a new multi-function steering wheel for this car, using longer shift paddles that are easier to reach at any angle.  The "driver-oriented cockpit" was designed without any "stalks" sticking out of the steering column, instead using buttons for indicators, lights, and wipers on the wheel itself.  Bluetooth, cruise, infotainment, rear camera, and sat-nav controls are all mounted in clusters, while stereo controls are placed in back of the wheel.

Vehicle Dynamic Assistance will also be included, providing drivers with information about the brakes, engine, gearbox, and tires.  VDA and can be used in three settings, Race, CT off, and CST off, while providing three status conditions to the driver: Warm-Up, Go, and Over, for when components overheat.

You can find out more about the Ferrari 458 Italia from the two-minute video above and the press release below.  The car will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month.

MORE NEWS ON THE FERRARI 458 ITALIA ON WWW.FERRARI.COM: NEW PHOTOS AND INTERVIEW NOW ON THE SITE IN THE RUN-UP TO THE FRANKFURT SHOW

Maranello, 27 August 2009 - In the run-up to the official unveiling of the Ferrari 458 Italia at the Frankfurt Motor Show on the 15th of September, enthusiasts can find out more about the car on www.ferrari.com. There they will find the first photographs of the 458 Italia's interior and of the steering wheel and instrument binnacle which represent a significant step forward in the concept of the ergonomic interface between driver and car.

In fact the main commands are now grouped on the steering wheel, the secondary commands are handily set in two satellite pods either side of the dash and there are now comprehensive instrument displays on the panel ahead of the driver. These solutions represent an important safety aspect, enabling the driver to concentrate fully on driving. Similarly this layout ensures maximum control of the car in high performance driving, an uncompromising approach that derives directly from Ferrari's F1 experience.

Working closely with the Ferrari Styling Centre, the engineers have thus reinterpreted the positioning of the major commands to provide a truly driver-oriented cockpit. All steering-column mounted stalks have been eliminated, with the indicators, full beam, flash and windscreen wiper functions now being activated by buttons on the steering wheel boss. The button to select the shock absorber setting is now positioned next to the ‘Engine start' button where it falls readily to hand. Behind the wheel are a number of secondary functions, such as the stereo, while the gearbox paddles are now longer making shifts even easier from any steering angle.

The right-hand satellite pod on the dash incorporates controls for the infotainment, the Bluetooth connection, sat-nav, digital speedo and rear parking camera. Clustered on the left-hand satellite pod instead are the optional cruise control, buttons for choosing the video setting of the left-hand dash TFT screen and the on-board computer interface. The latter controls the trip computer, the Vehicle Dynamic Assistance and the display of the car's set-up.

The Vehicle Dynamic Assistance monitors the operating parameters of the most important areas of the car - engine/gearbox, tyres and brakes. The VDA is enabled in the following manettino settings - Race, CT off and CST off - and provides visual confirmation of the status of each component based on an algorithm from parameters reading lateral and longitudinal acceleration, revs and speed. This enables the driver to assess the ideal operating conditions for the car. There are three status settings: WARM-UP (operating temperature too low), GO (ideal operating conditions) and OVER (one or more components are no longer at their optimum level and need cooling).

Along with the photos now on-line, the Ferrari site also includes an exclusive video interview with Paolo Pininfarina, Chairman of Pininfarina S.p.A., who provides in depth insight into the 458 Italia's design philosophy and exterior styling. The next release on www.ferrari.com will include an analysis of the car's performance characteristics with an interview with seven-times F1 World Champion Michael Schumacher.

I love the interior. reminds me of S2000 interior, everything within driver's fingers reach with the hands on the wheel.

The dash/steering wheel treatment is starting to grow on me too. I think the dash area looks better in black.

It looks like a very cheap Ferrari on the front, like a Hyundai, while the side & the rear end is OK but still needs alot of change & it does not look like a Ferrari at any view, what are they trying to prove, how ugly can it get?

13.7L/100km is hefty, common it's not that bad. I don't know what to think of the interior though.

What can I say, it's gorgeous! Ferrari has done it again. I wish they would've gone baby Enzo in the front but this will suffice. Still, when I flash back to the early stages of any Ferrari design, even the Enzo, I find that the artist renderings/sketches look better. I'm talking about only the realistic (bold) dimensions, and mostly small details, that tend to get lost during the production stage, which you may notice at 1:02 and 37 seconds into this video.

unlikely, seeing as it's normally aspirated.

It may be something to counter noise limits in California, where when the car is in race mode it opens an extra pipe for extra flow and noise. It is a different diameter than the other 2 which is a little bit confusing too. I guess we will just have to wait and see.

13.7L/100km is not bad though for a ferrari with 0-100 in 3.4 sec.

the third tailpipe made specially for the ferrari driver and his passenger, in case they peed or wet themselves during abrupt acceleration. and you guys thought it's running on hydrogen? haha

..it is just beautiful .. the body design screams " aerodynamics " .. i just don't get that people who don't like it..crying about gallardo or hyundai ...geez..the triple exhaust is from the f40, one of the purist ferrari ever, if you want some fancy trapezoid exhaust just buy a merc or BMW or Audi ... the miracle of this car will be the combination of that awesome 4.5 ltr engine and that aero effects and the chassis
