SAAB is confident that its new flagship vehicle will set it off to a new and exciting future.
The brand new 9-5 which has been spied a few times over recent months is now being prepared for Frankfurt Motor Show launch.

"This car is the start of a new era for our brand," says Jan-Åke Jonsson, SAAB Automobile's Managing Director. "We have created an advanced and very distinctive product by leveraging the power of our roots in key areas, such as progressive Scandinavian design, sporty driving and responsible performance. The new 9-5 delivers in all these respects, as will every future product from Saab."

Branded as the most technically advanced SAAB ever, the new 9-5 also looks less SAAB than previous models. Its design is inspired by the Aero X concept car with its low-slung stance, its muscular build, uncluttered lines and curvaceous shapes.

Technological features include keyless entry and starting - the ignition is still located between the front seats, adaptive headlights with Bi-xenon beams, head-up display on the windscreen, an adaptive chassis with real-time damping control and SAAB's XWD with eLSD.

Launch engines are a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel with 118kW (160hp), a 2.0-litre petrol turbo making 162kW (220hp) and a 2.8-litre V8 petrol producing 221kW (300hp) and peak torque of 400Nm. Soon after the launch a 1.6-litre petrol turbo with 132kW (180hp) will be unveiled. At the same time a 2.0-litre BioPower E85 engine is to debut as well. Mated with all these engines are 6-speed transmissions.

SAAB 9-5 passengers will be able to entertain themselves with a Harman Kardon surround sound audio system which is accessed through an 8-inch touch screen. For those who like to store their music in the car a 10GB hard drive is provided. USB and auxiliary ports are also available. Other options include a rear DVD player with its own screens and wireless headphones.

The new 9-5 starts selling in 2010.

Press Release (Click to expand)

  • All-new premium saloon embodies a new era for Saab
  • Scandinavian design inspired by the Aero X and Saab’s rich heritage
  • Engineered with driver focus for a sporty driving experience
  • Excels in responsible performance with emphasis on safety and environmental concern
  • Most technically advanced Saab ever with an array of ‘high-tech’ features
  • Public debut at the 2009 Frankfurt International Motor Show

Sleek, sophisticated and unmistakably Saab, the all-new 9-5 saloon signals the dawn of a new era for the Saab brand.  With progressive, confident styling and advanced technology, Saab’s distinctive new flagship will bring a fresh, alternative choice to the premium saloon segment when it goes on sale in 2010.

The clean, sculpted shape embraces the purity of Scandinavian design, and its dramatic wraparound window graphic echoes Saab’s aviation heritage. With styling inspired by the award-winning Aero X concept car and a muscular, low-slung stance, the new 9-5 heralds the introduction of a bold and expressive design language.

The array of high-tech features on offer includes: an aircraft-inspired head-up information display (HUD); adaptive headlights (Bi-Xenon Smart Beam); adaptive cruise control; Saab DriveSense adaptive chassis with real-time damping control; keyless entry and starting; dual-zone climate control; dynamic parking assistance, and Saab XWD with eLSD: the industry-leading all-wheel-drive system.

The all-turbo powertrain line-up is the broadest ever offered by Saab, carrying forward Saab’s rightsizing engine strategy focusing on responsible performance through the development of highly efficient four cylinder turbo engines. There is a choice of three fuels – petrol, diesel and E85 bioethanol – and with diesel power, the new 9-5 offers CO2 emissions as low as 139 g/km.

“This car is the start of a new era for our brand,” says Jan-Åke Jonsson, Saab Automobile’s Managing Director. “We have created an advanced and very distinctive product by leveraging the power of our roots in key areas, such as progressive Scandinavian design, sporty driving and responsible performance. The new 9-5 delivers in all these respects, as will every future product from Saab.”

Scandinavian Design

‘Forward-looking design that doesn’t ignore where it’s coming from’, sums up the visual appeal of the all-new Saab 9-5 saloon. “We are giving a fresh, very modern expression to some of our classic brand design cues,” says Simon Padian, Saab Brand Design Chief. “We have visual themes found in our recent concept cars, such as the Aero X, which are inspired by Scandinavian design and our brand’s aircraft heritage.”

The face of the new 9-5 is defined by a deep grille flanked with curving, ice-block headlamp units. The entire glasshouse is presented as a ‘wraparound’ mono graphic: the disguised windshield and side pillars giving the cabin Saab’s signature cockpit look. In this interplay of proportions, the windshield and roof are reminiscent of the classic 900 model.

Viewed from any angle, the all-new 9-5 cuts a strong and powerful stance. The ‘organic sculpture’ of the low-slung body blends clean, uncluttered lines with natural, curvaceous shapes. Brand design cues are evident in the ‘hockey stick’ belt-line, the strong rear C-pillars and the fuselage-smooth surfacing of the bodywork. The large Saab logo embossed in the centre of the grille characterises the assertive, self-confident design language.

The car’s dynamic character is emphasized by a falling roof-line that culminates in sweeping rear pillars that buttress a slightly recessed rear screen. Bumpers that are subtly flared to blend into the wheels convey latent energy. Below that smooth, flat rear deck, a full-width, ice-block rear light bar wraps into signature lighting.

The new 9-5’s overall proportions stretch the traditional three-box saloon silhouette, while avoiding the fastback cliché of a four-door coupé look.

Driver-focused cabin

Inside the spacious cabin, simple forms define the architecture and echo the design purity of the exterior. Compared to its predecessor, legroom and shoulder width are increased both front and rear, with class-leading rear legroom. The choice of materials, the fit and finish and the tactile quality of the controls all reflect the new 9-5’s premium character.

The driver-focused cockpit is traditional Saab, but its execution is pioneering. The deep centre console sweeps up at a shallow angle around the driver into the main instrument display, which is topped by a neat ventilation zone. Deeply recessed main dials include a rolling ‘altimeter’ speed read-out, a reference to Saab’s aviation heritage from the Aero X concept. Driver displays, including the optional head-up display (HUD) in the windscreen, are illuminated in signature Saab green and have a crisp, floating appearance.  The car’s ignition, now a start/stop button, remains between the front seats, next to the gear shift.

Infotainment choices include a top-of-the-line Harman Kardon 5.1 channel surround sound audio system and an 8-inch colour touch screen navigation system with hard disk storage for map data and 10GB for MP3 music files. A large centre console provides storage and connections for several portable devices through USB and 3.5mm AUX ports alongside a 12V power outlet.

Rear passengers can even access their own audio or watch a DVD. The rear seat entertainment unit in the back of the centre console accommodates audio controls and folding viewing screens are installed in the backs of the front seats. Wireless headphones are provided for listening and viewing.

On the road

An array of chassis technology is focused on delivering a sporty, rewarding driving experience that belies the 9-5’s size. Saab XWD, the industry-leading all-wheel-drive system already available on the Saab 9-3, is offered at launch with the 2.0-litre turbo and 2.8V6 turbo engines with further applications due in the future.  Available throughout the range are: adaptive chassis control, with driver settings selected through Saab DriveSense; Bi-Xenon Smart Beam adaptive headlights and adaptive cruise control. Three different suspension layouts are fitted according to engine power and all are available with a sport chassis setting.

Saab has some 30 years experience in turbocharging engines and the all-turbo powertrain line-up in the new 9-5 further develops its rightsizing engine strategy. At launch, the four-cylinder diesel comprises a 160 hp, 2.0-litre turbo engine with CO2 emissions of just 139g/km and the 2.0-litre petrol turbo engine develops 220bhp.  A top-of-the-line 2.8 V6 turbo, generating 300hp and 400Nm of torque, is offered exclusively with Saab XWD.

Shortly after launch, a 1.6-litre petrol turbo with 180hp will be introduced, together with a 2.0-litre BioPower E85 engine. All transmissions will be six-speed.

A new era

Defined and equipped by Saab as its top-of-the-line contender in the premium saloon segment, the all-new 9-5 is the most technically advanced car ever produced by the company.  It will be built at Saab’s home plant in Trollhättan, where it has been engineered.

The all-new 9-5 makes its public debut at the 2009 Frankfurt International Motor Show. Combining head-turning good looks with cutting-edge driving technology, it’s the start of a new era for Saab.

It's good, capturing the essence of SAAB.

The interior is original and one of the best in its class.

Looks like a swan. Although, some features and the chasis are from the brother Insignia, this car has a sleek appearence, and has something different (seems to be the A pillar and the wind-screen being at the very front), nice taste.

Bristol411S3 I completely agree with you people automatically assume that all big luxury saloons are german and dont consider other makes such as Saab, Lexus and Jaguar.

Something to look forward to see. Interior pictures give really good impression of the interior quality.

Beautiful saloon, more attractive than the main competition, especially the jet-like 'continuous' windscreen with the darkened pillars. Looks the part for sure. All now depends on the way it drives.

Wow, I have to say I am actually impressed. I like the exterior, and I LOVE the interior. The pictures look like the materials are of a high quality, the layout is excellent and it looks high tech, yet familiar. Perhaps a bit too "jet" like, but I know SAAB liks to play up this jet fighter heritage. My last SAAB was a 1995 900...and after 14 months with a Lemon Law lawsuit, I vowed to never set foot in another SAAB (they treated me like dirt). Maybe this new 9-5 and new Swedish ownership will change my negative past experience. Mycket brå SAAB!

The essence of SAAB - its Scandinavian design philosophy has been restored; especially the interior, reeks of SAABs of yore. I will have one of these...

I like it. I wonder if Night Panel switches off everything except the HUD? Also, I am intrigued by what appears to be the thing you get in planes showing your relativity to the horizon within the speedometer -- what IS that thing doing?

This actually looks like a propper SAAB for the first time in years. They might actually be 'cool' again, like when I was a kid/teenager. I wonder about the handling/driving dynamics?

this car looks promising and hope they could emulate the jaguar xf's recent success. looks great and i hope it drives well in its 12 years in the making. i hope the 9-5 is not just a car with the luxury comfort of an airbus A380 but also a saab. the brand are known for their turbo engines and now their all wheel drive technology. i hope they could build a small golf or 1-series rival that's rear and all-wheel. don't market it as a premium brand but an alternative to the vw. they should be able to produce a subaru of europe. i have faith with koenigsegg but they need to make their car special again. let's see how the 9-5 perform with others

I disagree with the statement that "it looks less SAAB than previous models." I think it evidently looks like a modern interpretation of SAAB's classic design characteristics.

those fog lights (?) kinda look Acuraish, but I like this Saab, its looks Saabish, but wake me up when they make a 2 door 9-3 again.

2.8L V8? Hmmm. Am I the only one that thinks that's strange? Seems kinda small to me for a V8. Probably a missprint. Surely its a V6.

Regardless, heres an even smaller V8...

A 2009 Formula One car has a displacement of 2.4L for their V8 engines. I am pretty sure it's a carried over from its old V6 on the SAAB.

This is not the first time, please no more typo errors WCF

wow... I am really impressed, Saab´s guys managed to come up with a design that is truly a modern interpretation of Saab tradition and design cues, it is as good looking as it can be. I particularly liked the blacked-out A pillar that blends into the top half of the side mirrors, and the muscular looks af the C pillar. The interior is absolutely top notch in design and execution, beautiful gauges and typical Saab even the airvents have a special twist to them. Now back to the outside, nice uncluttered fascias front and rear, clean flanks and a simple yet classy greenhouse. Plus those wheels... gorgeous!

I can´t see how GM could have anything to do with this design. If Saab also had their way with the driving dynamics then under Koenigsegg ownership they do have an honest fighting chance. I am thrilled about this car.

Okay, now this one truly looks "born from jets." I love the use of black on the front pillars (eat your heart out, Jaguar XJ!) and black on the tops of the mirrors to emphasize lightness, like an aircraft's glass canopy, and now those mirrors look like winglets! Turbofan-style wheels are wholly appropriate, too.

Author John Heskett's book "Industrial Design" contains a circa 1960(!) sketch by SAAB designer Sixten Sason of his model '99' that looks hauntingly familiar today, quote: "Sixten Sason trained originally as an artist in Paris, then as an engineer, a background that admirably equipped him to combine the treatment of aesthetic and technical factors." I think his spirit lives on with this great example of Scandinavian design. Yes, SAAB's chief designer, Simon Padian, is English, but great car designers can learn to express themselves fluently using the design vocabulary of any country.

Bravo SAAB--I want one!

I can't stop looking at it! On the nose, the two halves of the bumper seem to form an angle like that made by swept-back wings of a jet. Also, the wingspan of the tail-lights is beautiful and reminds me of the winged solar disk of the Ancient Egyptian god Horus. Long live SAAB!

I'm not a SAAB fan but this car looks good. looks really good. exterior is super fine. build quality seems to be great (panel gaps, interior and exterior).

The only thing I didn't really like is the non-linear speedometer. the awkward positioning of the aircon vents and the usual SAAB huge panel of absolute nothing around the navigation screen area. Other than that the car should be great!

Another GM based disaster, atleast the Insignia is nice to look at but this one uggh! SAAB is known for its ecentricity but this thing just tries too hard to be ecentric, not a clean line on the whole car. From the news of it pretty weak powertrain too pitiful! tsk tsk

It's easy to get excited about something so new and radical as this. But there are three reasons why I believe Saab will fail miserably, both despite this car, and because of it and the lessons they have failed to learn in the past. First, the design of this new vehicle has more ‘American GM’ about it than 'Saab' heritage. It’s not even ‘evolutionary’ Saab in my opinion. Added to which, it's far too brave for anything other than a niche market, and as the latter is exactly what Saab needs to break out of if it is to succeed in the future, that doesn’t leave much of an audience for this car. My second point is that Saab has consistently been rated bottom of the pile in the many owners’ reliability surveys that have been published over the years, and they seem to have completely ignored the need to polish up their act in the quality assurance department. Whilst I’ll have to admit that my own Saabs have been the most practical, powerful, economical (for the segment) and comfortable vehicles I have ever owned (if not the cleanest), I also have to say they have been the most painfully unreliable by a long way, and for this reason I would not have another until I hear the CEO talk about the efforts they intend to make to improve on their reputation for poor levels of reliability. Surely, they can’t be content to score such consistently poor results in this department? Finally, most of this car comes under license to Saab directly from the GM parts bin (it’s essentially a highly modified Insignia). Perhaps, on the face of it, the Insignia isn’t such a terrible car, but would I ever buy GM or Vauxhall? No way. So why should I buy one of these when it’s really just more GM technology with Saab’s badge on it? Okay, Saab doesn’t have the capital to develop its own new technology, but we’ve been here for years and it hasn’t done them any favours to date, so I doubt it will now, otherwise GM would have held on to them. This car represents the best that Saab can to under present circumstances. But it’s unlikely to be enough. With its overly radical styling, tiny market share, long-standing reputation in the motoring press for unreliability, and ongoing dependence on GM who couldn’t wait to be rid of the brand due to its lack of profitability, I anticipate that it will be short-lived product, just as I expect Koenigsegg’s ownership will also be short-lived. So who will rescue Saab next, I wonder?
