this is great news for countries like malaysia with more than 300% duty taxation for imported cars or roadtax on cc displacements.

... not sure about this one. ok i agree that the 250 CDI is a phenomenal engine, and the fact that it's lighter means that it won't be any slower than the V6, but for starters it means that the S250 CDI will have to go back to having the old 5-speed gearbox, which is naff (i know because i've owned Mercs with it) and the S-Class is meant to be an innovator of technology.
secondly, the 250 CDI engine is all well and good on their lower spec cars, but it has no place in the S-Class (which i think, all things considered, is the best car in the world). detracts too much from its status as the flagship model in the Merc range

We've got get used to small displacement turbocharged engines appearing in top end models. It's much easier to get decent fuel economy and therefore lower emissions from smaller, highly tuned engines. MB are doing it now, but we'll see even greater extremes from BMW in time -- those guys are talking 3 cylinder engines for the 3-series replacement.

Ok, this is perhaps a smart move, but do you want a 4 banger in a 5m car? Leave it in the c and e class. So the 350cdi has 235hp, that does 7,6L/100km, this 5.9, doesn't matter I would still take the 350cdi. I rather do it this way, take a S500, which burns fuel about twice as much and drive half the miles with twice the fun.

Impressive figures for a small diesel. As always the market will decide if it's ready for a 4-cylinder S-class. I think it is, because new legislation will ban larger, more polluting engines from city centres. And in an S-class only power matters as you won't be able to feel or hear the engine anyway.

Do you know that global vehicles emissions respond for 8% of ALL emissions of CO2 in the world???
I understand that we are achieving a very important goal on efficiency, but I'm tired of this eco-movement!!!
I want drive a 30L/100km bubbling V8 or feel a massive roar of a V12 for miles long if I desire and not feel guilty for it!!!
Blame on those American and Chinese corporations factories!! Not us humble mortals with some desire for 4 wheels excitament!!!

those are really interesting statistics, i've always wondered what percent of carbon in the atmosphere is actually from automobile tailpipes. do you have a source for those figures?

In Asia we had an S280 before so seeing a "2" after the "S" is nothing new.
A 4 banger is demoralizing for a large saloon.
But I am sure there will be demand for it since a lot of people buy the S-Class for the status.
If you can get an S-Class for the price of a high-end E-Class there will be people willing to sacrifice the number of cylinders.
Besides it will do wonders for sales of the diesel engined C and E-Class cars with the same engine, since it is good enough for the S-Class it should be damn good in the smaller cars. (This is supposing that sales of diesel cars are lower than non-diesel cars...like my market.)

If the GLK 220 CDI can be paired with the seven speed auto, I see no reason why the S 250 CDI has to work with the 5 speed auto.

Maybe it's gonna be cheap, maybe it's gonna be "fashion" in this unstable economy, maybe it's gonna drink under 6L/100km, but are you ready to buy a 4 cylinder in a S-Class?
The only way to sell it is to have strong arguments to sell it as a "corporate vehicule", a professional one, for a problem of taxes (at least in France...).
And god knows 80% of the French cars are diesel, but i really think nobody's ready to buy it...

it's funny to know that the powerplant will sit in the engine bay that is three times bigger in cc displacement or twice as many cylinders. i think it is a great branding or marketing for their BlueEfficiency versus BMW's EfficientDynamics. If a four-cylinder turbodiesel is good enough to power or has a refinement for an S-Class, I am pretty sure it is pretty good for other range models, particularly the C- and the E-Class. I am curious to know how does this compare to the S-Class hybrid?

Mercedes will most likely still use the 7 Speed box, if I'm not mistaken they are also using it in the GLK CDi range as well. I know that the new Diesotto engine they are working on is a mere 1.8L capacity. Soon you'll walk into a dealership and order your 1.6l S-class....Ha Ha Ha!

i dont know what to say the 1st time i read the title i was LOOOOOOOOOOOOL so were my buddies in the office but steal this is great move for merc so people in eygpt and other over charging tax countries can have a cheap sclass
