VW CEO proposing three new Porsche models - report

Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG

VW wants to raise Porsche volumes to 150,000 units a year - new models could include a 'baby Cayenne' modeled on the VW Tiguan

VW CEO Martin Winterkorn is wasting no time in coming up with huge plans for the Porsche brand. VW and Porsche recently announced a deal in which the two automakers would merge into a single, massive automotive business.

First off, Winterkorn wants to raise Porsche's volume, and raise it by a lot. Porsche sold about 100,000 units in its last fiscal year but stands to see a drop in the current one due to the economic crisis that has hit premium automakers pretty hard. Winterkorn has said that he wants the Porsche brand to be doling out 150,000 units a year by 2013.

And where would all those extra sales come from? It would definitely have to be from lower-priced, more mass appealing products and VW plans to add three new models to the Porsche lineup in order to do that.

It is too early for any detailed sketches of what models Porsche would build. But VW has spoken on what kind of products Porsche should bring to the marketplace.

One would be a vehicle slated below Porsche's current entry-level model the Boxster. A second could be a "baby brother" to the Cayenne, or a Porsche variant on the VW Tiguan. Although, VW has promised it would not water-down the Porsche name with too much Volkswagen content. These would be models that remain true to the promise of the brand. Such a model may already be in development by Porsche and Audi, although the brands have denied up to now that any such vehicle was in the works.

Lastly, there would be a variation on the new Panamera. Hard to imagine what that would look like, except to speculate that Porsche may want to field a less expensive sedan onto the market to compete more directly against BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

Porsche Baby cayenne is one. What could be the others?

Best: 928 and a new Carrera GT.

worst: A porsche people carrier and a Golf-based hatchback.

well put... haha hope they don't ruin the "porsche GT" name by creating something absolutely horrible. the current GT is sex... i hope the next model in line is an orgasm :P!!

A 2 door, front engined GT will be good, the other mambo jambo with baby SUV's, hatchbacks and small sedans is stupid, and not in the "Porsche spirit" that attracts so many people.

Best joint effort: a mid-engined 914 based on recent VW/Seat concepts (Bluesport?), but with something that truly makes it a Porsche and not just a rebadged/restyled VW.

All the rest is either pure Porsche (928, Carrera GT) or pure crap (Tiguan...).

i reckon if they're likely to make a baby SUV it'll be based on the Q5 rather than the Tiguan.

it's already been semi-confirmed that the VW BlueSport will form the basis of an Audi and Porsche small sports car.

third car? i hope it's a hypercar, because Porsche have got the rest of the luxury market covered and i hope they aren't thinking of making anything that would lower their brand status.

How to destroy a solid brand...

My guess would be a Porsche 914 for the modern day base on the VW BlueSport (as Targa_Florio says); a 928 successor in a 2-door Panamera based GT; and a Porsche version of the Audi Q5.

soon they're going to make the same mistake jaguar did with the x-type or mercedes with their front-wheel drive A-B Class unless they could prove us wrong.

Jaguar are a premium brand, competing with BMW, Mercedes and Audi and needed to compete in the largest volume CD premium class. The simplest and quickest way was to re-skin the Ford Mondeo, hence the X-Type. The Audi A4 is the equivalent of this product, a re-skinned Passat. Therefore VW does not need another competitor in this market taking sales from a strong brand, and compromising the Porsche name. Porsche will remain as a rear drive / 4wd sports brand to compete with premium sporting products at the lower end such as Z4s, premium products in the middle range such as the Range Rover Sport, Maserati GTs and Jaguar XKRs etc, and supercar beginners such as Aston V8s at the top end. Then VW introduces the Lamborghini brand, then Bently, then Bugatti.....

the A4 and Passat haven't shared a platform for 2 generations now.

in fact, the only VW/Audi products that share platforms are the Golf and A3 (but the A3 came first so i would argue it's Audi's platform) and the Touareg and Q7 (and i hate them both so i'm not bothered).

even the A8 doesn't share a platform with the Phaeton/Bentley Conti.

...I am sure the R4 is back on for audi and that will spawn a baby porsche to slot below the Boxster...They should downsize the Cayenne onto the Tiguan platform...and then a $ 70,000-80,000 entry sport sedan to compete with MB/BMW/Audi

not going to water it down? from what ive read then thats whats likely to happen. porsche and vw are poles apart in the ethos (stating the obvious i know) but the thought of vw making decisions like what porsche shoul have in its portfolio? well i'd say vw should put its own diabolically dull range in order before it foists its ideas on porsche. sad day.

those models were all considered by Porsche itself over the years, VW just backs it up now.

I am in absolute agreement with Bristol. However, I never liked the idea of a Roxter.

- a cheaper mini midengined roadster below the boxster, based on the VW bluesport concept platform

- a 928 successor on the panamera platform

- a baby cayenne on the Q3 or tiguan platform

so we all agree more or less, i def. think all those cars would sell very good, even the baby cayenne. Smaller SUVS are selling like hot cakes over here.

I like a new 928 or 944, but really why more cars? The last thing I want to see from porsche is a small suv.

Drive the brand into the ground VW, go on. Scumbags.

Wiedeking was already producing too high volumes for brand value in the long run. Post-1998 Porsche's have considerably lower carrying values. People still seem to buy the cars though.

how bout a proper front engine rear wheel drive 2 door coupe or 4 door coupe to take on the 3-series coupe and a5 coupe with the desirability of the 944. VW GROUP DOESN'T HAVE ANY NEW REAR WHEEL DRIVE CAR BUT THE BALBONI!

For the "914" (VW Bluesport / Audi R4 / Seat Tango), it would be nice to have a flat-4 engine, rather than an inline-4 which will be shared with VW brands (VW/Audi/Seat)
