VW Merger could See Porsche Double Sales within 4 Years

Volkswagen AG CEO Martin Winterkorn has told German magazine Manager Magazin that future VW subsidiary Porsche AG could double its annual output to about 150,000 by 2013. According to Winterkorn such an event depends on the automaker adding new models to its existing range. New Porsche CEO Michael Macht apparently agrees.

A number of new Porsches such as a smaller SUV to play wingman to the Cayenne, another version of the Panamera or even something smaller than the Boxster would be suitable for the cause.

The new, bigger VW would not stop there however. Discussions are reportedly going on with Japanese small car specialist Suzuki about a possible tie-up. This would see VW increase its compact footprint quite significantly if a deal was struck.

"Suzuki would be an interesting partner because of its competency in small cars," Winterkorn said.

Sources cited by the publication claim that Germany's largest vehicle manufacturer is eyeing a 10% stake in Suzuki. It went on to say that France's Renault is also circling around Suzuki, an arousing prospect if true, considering the former's alliance with another Japanese company Nissan.

Assuming all this happens, Volkswagen could find itself managing Audi, Skoda, Bentley, SEAT, VW, Porsche, Suzuki, Lamborghini, Bugatti, Scania and MAN. Another GM in the making?

i hope they build a small X6 with air suspensions like the A6 allroad, that would be cool, a rally Porsche.

Now that I think about it, the Paris-Dakar version of the 959 and earlier rallyized 911s looked somehow "correct" to me. But I swear, if they build something that reminds me in any way of a cute little Korean-built faux-by-faux, I will henceforth drag myself into the middle of the street and impale the base of my skull with a wooden spoon.

1. a highly efficient Mini(midengined)-Fun-Roadster on the platform of the VW bluesport concept

2. a 2-door Coupe on the panamera platform (spiritual 928 successor)

3. a compact and efficient performance SUV on the Q3 platform or something.

why not ?! All those are models which the market would love to have, i am 100% sure.

If Porsche did go through making more models. Here is what they should do.

1. A bring-back of the 912, a lighter smaller less powerful variant of the 911.

2. A 2 door Panamera.

3. A light-weight low powered fuel efficient rear-engined hot-hatch that is very fuel efficient.

4. And lastly, a revival of the 914. Very low power, very low weight, loads of torque!

Who said being fuel efficient couldn't be cool??

i don't quite understand. I thought it's porsche that owns major VW share... why it seems like it's VW owning and controlling porsche?

can't wait to see the day where porsche becomes commoditized.. it will be no longer a show-off thing to drive a porsche just like the numerous benz and bm on the roads now..

I don't care if Porsche builds a street legal raft.... as long as they keep pumping out 911 GT3's and GT2's onto the road.

I really don't mind what they do, unless they stick to all their cars must look like 911, see the Panamera, Cayenne......

and also if all their cars still feel like a Porsche.

If they fail that, I will be disappointed

true.. please give us the spiritual successor of the 914 priced and pitch it against the MX-5, there's a huge slice of market you germans could eat.

yes i would like to see the 928 successor too.

no. no baby cayenne suv. please no more hamburgers.

i hope vw could produce the up! concept car with rear wheel drive. cost factor? the mitsubishi i and the tata nano could do it, why can't you? the chassis could also be the basis for the 914 roadster.

And guess what, it will cost double then the MX-5, why? Because it's a Porsche, the master of overpricing cars...and underpricing VW stocks.

not true:

I don't think Volkswagen will change it much, Porsche is such a brand," Howard Wheeldon, senior strategist at BGC Partners told The Associated Press. "There's huge value in just the brand, it'd be best to leave it alone."

Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn, who ran luxury brand Audi under VW ownership, said that is just what Europe's biggest automaker by sales plans to do.

"Like Audi today, Porsche can also continue its independent development under the aegis of Volkswagen and preserve its own identity," he said after announcing plans to put the luxury sports car maker under VW's umbrella through a merger.

so, VW will help Porsche to grow but the structure (engineering, know-how etc.) of Porsche will be preserved. i am fine with that.

Porsche has become a more widely known trademark than Coca Cola a few years ago and it has maintained it. VW wouldn't play with that.
