SEAT has announced it will be introducing the new León CUPRA R at the Frankfurt motor show next month and the model will be the most powerful León available Europe-wide.

The León CUPRA R will come with VW Group's 2.0 liter TSI engine juiced up to a comfy 265 hp. That number is achieved partly through the use of a new high-pressure fuel injector and SEAT promises the model will still meeting EU5 emission norms. The only León models available that top that are the very limited León Cupra 310 Limited Edition with 306 bhp sold exclusively in the Netherlands, and the German market-only Leon Cupra Edition with 282 bhp. The standard Leon Cupra comes with the 2.0 liter TSI dialed to 240 hp.

The León CUPRA R will also feature SEAT's XDS system, a self-locking differential that works with the ESP system to improve traction. Seat promises the León CUPRA R will deliver an "easy torque transmission and elasticity" while clocking in its 0 to 100 km/h sprint at 6.2 seconds and maxing out speed at 250 km/h (probably electronically limited, although SEAT does not say).

Consumption is a reasonable 8.1 liters/100 km, considering all the dust-making capabilities of a 265 hp hot-hatch.

19-inch wheels with five double-spokes wrapped in 235/35 tires and a new set superior brakes have been added to compliment and match the performance being generated from under the hood.

On the inside are the bucket sport seats upholstered in gray Alcantara as well as white LED lights on the instrument panel to give the Cupra R a proper touch of sportiveness.

Pricing info and a release date have not yet been made available.

AT THE UPCOMING FRANKFURT MOTOR SHOW

SEAT is exhibiting the León CUPRA R - the apex of sportiness

  • 265 hp 2.0 TSI engine, the most powerful in the history of SEAT
  • Impressive looks of a feisty, sporty competition vehicle
  • Effortless control provided by the electronic self-blocking XDS mechanism

SEAT is beginning the second half of the year with the same punch as it ended the first half, keeping up with the launch of new products that are making the Spanish brand's range the freshest and youngest on the market.

This year's Frankfurt Motor Show, being held from 17-27 September, is the backdrop for the unveiling of SEAT's new León CUPRA R, the sportiest, most powerful model in the company's history thanks to its awesome 265 hp 2.0 TSI engine and a long list of exclusive interior and exterior detailing that redefine its stunning new looks and personality.

The CUPRA R crowns the León's sportiest range, providing a tempting offer of both equipment and engine line-ups.

High-tech, high-speed performance

The new CUPRA R has earned a special chapter in SEAT's history book. Equipped with a 265 hp engine, it is the brand's most powerful car, and matches the output of the champion SEAT León TDI raced at the WTCC. These credentials are revealing of SEAT's new model's excellent performance output and figures.

The focal point on the new León CUPRA R is its 265 hp direct injection 2.0 TSI engine. Its main characteristics are its tremendous power, easy torque transmission and elasticity. The car's new engine also features a new, high-pressure fuel pump injector to satisfy its greater performance demands, while fully complying with strict EU5 emissions standards.

The new León CUPRA R powerhouse delivers performance levels worthy of a WTCC car - a top speed of 250 km/h and 0 to 100 km/h acceleration in barely 6.2 seconds. It also covers a standing kilometre in only 25.7 seconds. These competition-class figures are achieved with the fuel efficiency of only 8.1 litres on average to cover 100 km.

The high level of exclusivity of SEAT's new model is easily identifiable on both the outside and inside by the distinctive letter ‘R' readily visible on the central grille and at the lower right of the hatch, the right instrument dial and the remote control key. The exclusive CUPRA logo graces the front bumper on the lower left, the centre of the hatch, the steering wheel and the seat backrests.

Further distinctive detailing on the CUPRA R that underlines its racing spirit are the spectacular 19 inch, five double-spoke wheels shod with 235/35 tyres. The wheel assembly also enables a set of generous 17 inch 345 x 30 mm front disc brakes with 16 inch 286 x 12 mm at the rear given the greater braking capacity needed by a car that harnesses 265 hp beneath the bonnet.

The interior features eye-catching competition styled bucket seats in grey alcantara upholstery, white LED lighting on the instrument dials, a leather multi-functional steering wheel and an aluminium pedal arrangement. With its prevailing shades of black, the passenger compartment of SEAT's new model is as comfortable as any higher segment car, and the view from the driver's seat is as impressive as the cockpit of a race car.

The CUPRA R version displays an extensive line-up of standard equipment, including ABS + TCS, ESP + EBA, electronic self-blocking XDS, front airbags, 2 side airbags, 2 head airbags, passenger airbag disconnection, rear window seat Isofix anchoring points, low tyre pressure warning, automatic lights on, rain sensing wipers, rear parking sensor, cruise control, tri computer, cornering foglights, dual zone climate control and CD radio + MP3 + 8 speakers + MDI, among others.

Haven't we all grown tired of those Seat looks? They look so tired... maybe because there has been so many special performance versions throughout the years, or maybe because the fluid sporty lines are already showing their age, or maybe because the over styled design elements were dated to start with... but it seems to me as if the Altea and Leon have been around for DECADES now.

totally agree...they are becoming so boring...

@politz LOL... Man are you kiddin'? This is still one of the hottest models out there. Its design especially the side lines - coming out from the 2001 SEAT Salsa concept - has shown the way (and been copied) for other cars like the current Mazda 3, the Hyundai i30 or even the UPCOMING Opel/Vauxhall Astra! One must be blind not to tell that the SEAT Leon is one of the most modern cars, or even claim this is a dated design! For Gawd's sake!!!

Still, there is plenty of room for Seat and Skoda cars in the US market, in my opinion. A multi-brand lineup - Ibiza and Exeo from Seat, Yeti and Superb from Skoda - could end up beeing very succesful if marketed under the VW umbrella, slotted below the already premium-priced vee dubs.

I find it kind of hard to agree with you there Politz. VW big wigs are currently in a delima as to make a choice to admit the Polo to the U.S market. I don't think that VW North America would find it feasible to take on the Leon within the U.S. market. It may take away sales from the GTI.

It seems to me, mr politz, you're trying too hard to put a blame on this car by posting twice, one message after another. Why is that? First you mention this absurd nonsense about some kind of dated design lines (?...) and then in your second post you say you think cars like the Exeo or the Superb deserve to be in the US market. What is going on with you?

Hey, nothing special here... two separate messages, two separate thoughts. I just felt like stating, first, that the Leon was starting to show its age, at least to me. And then, since I DO LIKE Seat and Skoda cars, and since they're basically budget minded VWs, I thought it could be a good idea to sell them in the US, since American customers are becoming less brand concious - just look at Kia and Hyundai.

I only think it is strange when you 're saying that the Leon's looks feels tired and it is showing its age, not to dislike the Exeo or the Superb...

Is it only me in here, or there isn't quite nothing new about the Cupra ? The only new thing is about the Facelift (anyone has noticed that?) and the XDS .. Anyway, the best Seat in line is the ex A4 - Exeo, so .. what's the point of having this brand for VW AG?

Yes, it is only you. As far as I can see in your profile, you are a Skoda fan. Hey, what's up with you guys, are you afraid SEAT's competition inside the VW group? Well, you should not, the folks there in SEAT don't make up those ugly, crappy designs like the Skoda Superb or the Fabia!! Take a look at how SEAT is making nice sporty well-priced cars like the SEAT Leon and at how their design is leading in the automotive world. At least SEAT innovates instead of copying other brands, what Skoda has been doing for years. Nevertheless you can be proud of your choice for the first generation Fabia: isn't it true that Skoda is still using the dated 1999 platform for its current Skoda Fabia Mk2? The Fabia Mk2 remains the only one VAG supermini car to be using nowadays the old generation platform, the same being used in the Fabia Mk1. If it were for one brand to disappear, it would rather be for Skoda, their lines haven't contributed at all in the evolution of the design language. What they have made in Skoda over the last years is nothing more than overestimated cars and lately too overpriced .

First it is only a facelift, so they never say that is a new model.New SEAT Leon 2012 be patient. The are the same differences for example like the golf GTi (5) to the GTi(6) and here the differences are much bigger, there is a complete new Onboard CU that now one here speaks about, new climactronic unit, new multimedia and navigation…. BTW the Exeo was made only for one reason, proven technology now much cheaper and with little development you ur getting cheap Audi, also Exeo got the price Company car of the year in Germany for 2009 so from here you see the point. Fleet sales etc etc… You don’t get the style and fashion with SEAT you get the most sporty cheap car with solid VW technology. There are the most common SEAT buyers and that is what Audi group wants. • By the way now day’s they’ve stole the Seat Salsa concept 2001 and now the are showing it like Blue Sport something with VW and Audi bade. • The Ibiza 2008 is a base for the new Polo. Polo uses the new chaises Ao used and developed by SEAT. Also the new generation of OnBoard • The Leon Cupra engine is the most powerful 2.0 turbo in the group, and maybe is the base for the new coming VW R20, we will see…

Enough…

Brotherick .. the news was about Skoda and i haven't noticed? I guess you have a SEAT and feel offended? So .. look @ the sales figures and you will see for yourself how the things are, Skoda is selling millions of cars and SEAT is at the bottom of the sale tops. But not this was the point, i sense some frustration in your post .. anyway. The new Cupra is not so new, and for the design .. yes, they have good design but under the shell is the same VAG (Audi/Skoda/Vw) technology, i just wonder why the sell so low numbers..

"...MILLIONS of cars..." I hope you 've misspelled, you might have wanted to write TRILLIONS! "...BOTTOM..." Hahaha, where did you find that info? Actually this your own conclusion and please mind keeping it for yourself since you don't know facts: SEAT's rise in export sales in 2009 has hit a DECADE record high despite the decline in the internal market of Spain but also despite the economical world crisis. SEAT also sells outside Europe largely in Mexico and has been extremely successful there too, the same way Skoda sells ie. in China or in Eastern Europe - like in your own country Romania. That simple. In case you also don't know, Skoda sells at the present moment in a larger number of countries than SEAT as part of a market sharing between the brands of the VAG group, so your saying that it sells more is frankly irrelevant. So what is your point? You seem to be frustrated when the Cupra is one of the few VAG models to get the most powerful version of the EU5 VAG 2.0TSI engine up to 265 hp (the previous was up to 240 hp) and you don't think this is quite a change. You didn't either notice this is the recently facelifted version of a car that in terms of design already hits the rock in its segment, so there could be no reason for major changes in it (and yes in my own country I 've seen lots of fl Leons and just to inform you there are several substantial changes made to this car, like the larger windscreen in the back offering much greater visibility, the XDS system, some changes made to the interior like the new steering wheel-climatronic-multimedia system, the marvelous new alcantara seats and also some trully minor changes to the exterior styling like the slightly redesigned bumpers, lights etc. There was no need after all...) . And now I suggest you 'd better go and get a look at those awful Fabia, Roomster and Superb or whatever else you might think it's worth to look at your favourite Skoda range, instead of bothering with SEAT. And in case you are that anxious to know about the next SEAT Leon Mk3, then you 'll have to wait till 2011-2012 in order to see the next class-leading car in the small compact car segment.

Why does Skoda sell more than SEAT you ask? I could include the question, why are there so many Dacia, SsangYong, Hyunday, Kia... on the streets.

Because the people buying them don't care about the looks. They simply don't give a rat’s a55 about how the car will look in their driveway because there is no driveway to put it on. Cheap, and I mean cheap and not low priced cars will always have a demographic and since the times were tough in the last few years, more people decided to buy a 10'000 € car instead of a 25'000 € car. Point taken?

Whilst people shopping for a Skoda would not buy a SEAT they would buy a Dacia or a Kia. In the end they buy a Skoda spending a little more, because they know it's coming from VW and this can't be a bad thing. Don’t get me wrong, Skoda is great at what they are doing but we’re talking about a whole different target audience.

On the other hand, SEAT is faced with heavier competition like Mazda, Ford, Honda, VW... so people tend to buy different brands due to different likings. The market is saturated with similar cars and therefore the numbers will be splitted between the different offerers.
