More modern, less luxurious?

Our spies have managed to get the first interior photos of Volkswagen's redesigned 2011 Touareg SUV.

Despite some camouflage, it's clear that the new dash features four air vents, premium materials, and a "curvier" design. The center stack, while hidden, likely boasts a large navigation system which should make finding unfamiliar places a breeze. We can also see a new steering wheel, which looks slimmer and sportier than previous units used in the Touareg.

While the new Touareg will grow in size (it is expected to offer three rows of seats), it will be lighter and more street focused than its processor.

Power will come from a variety of engines including a 3.6-liter V6, a 4.2-liter V8, and a hybridized 3.0-liter V6. The hybrid combines a supercharged 3.0-liter V6, which produces 245 kW (333 hp) and 440 Nm (325 lb-ft) of torque, with an electric motor that produces 38 kW (52 hp) and 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) torque.

Look for the new Touareg to be unveiled in late 2010, with sales beginning in early 2011.

It does say it will be LIGHTER (but not how much), so the V8 could easily perform similarly to the current V10.

Of course, nobody buys the V10 because they need it's performance any more than they buy an SUV for it's off-road performance (which VW has apparently realized when their best-of-breed off-road performance didn't make a splash beyond car mag reviewers), so I expect the V10 will probably live on.

All in all, I get the impression I will not like the next Touareg's styling nearly as much as the current one, which I think looks infinitely better than the Audi, even better the Porsche. What else to expect when VW thinks they need to bloat out their perfectly fine A4.

I agree, there needs to be a bigger diesel and perhaps a bigger v8 petrol, say a 4.6FSI with 420 hp, and no turbo's

the V8 TDI (used in the Q7 and A8)is the only bigger Diesel engine u will see in the new Touareg, cause the V10 is no common rail eangine and therefore out of use.

I had the 06 V8 and it was more than enough power for everyday use. Honestly the V6 TDI is the one I would love to have. As long as I could get the 19 inch wheels and the premium leather I would be in for it. The Touareg is and amazing road trip vehicle. The only downside I had with mine was the gas consumption, with its weight it real had a thirst for gas. Other than that the thing was perfect.
