Reports have been suggesting that Lexus is preparing to take the next fight to the compact German hatches and coupes. The reports came as an increasing number of automakers downsize in most respects, including engine and body size. Here appears the official sketch of what a compact Lexus will look like.

The concept car will be shown to the public at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA). It promises to showcase the brand's innovation in design and its technological advances. Lexus is quite confident that the vehicle will raise the bar in the premium compact segment which is currently dominated by cars like the Audi A3, the BMW 1 Series and the Mercedes-Benz A/ B-Class.

Powertrains to be used in the final production models are still up in the air. But hints have been made as to engine direction after it emerged that Lexus had patented the names CT 200h, CT 300h and CT 400h in North America. Only the company's hybrid models are designated with the letter "h" on their badges. This action has led to speculation that the compact car will only employ hybrid technology for its entire range.

Front end looks like an (Toyota) Auris. No one bought that either

You're either trolling or have been living under a rock for the past 25 years.

The sketch looks awesome but unrealistic.

toyota auris with more chrome, walnut wood trimmings, premium leather wraparound dashboard for a 'premium feel' and a set of paddleshifters to give a 'sporty-feel'. oh and a hybrid powertrain. think of it as a lexus hs250 hatchback - which is in fact a prius, and a prius is in fact a corolla. the auris is in fact a corolla. i wonder whether the europeans would actually buy or drive this car compared to a more spirited vw golf or the bmw 1d

nederina I do hope that you realize Hybrids and Series Electric Hybrids are the way of the future if you like it or not. As far as your "a Lexus hs250 hatchback - which is in fact a Prius, and a Prius is in fact a corolla." comment is concerned I also hope you realize the Lexus HS 250h has nothing other than the Hybrid synergy drive in common with a Prius and also that the Prius has NOTHING at all in common with the Corolla. Big car companies of course do a lot of platform sharing/cost cutting but frankly you’re just reaching.......

But that naming convention would suggest that this "compact" would be running up to 3.0 V6 engines in a hybrid. That seems unlikely, doesn't it?

...no...remember what Lexus did with the hybrid LS...they named it LS600h to indicate it would compete against the German V12s...it probably indicates a 4cylinder+hybrid power to compete with normal V6s

That is actually a pretty cool sketch. Hope the production model looks something like it...

This sketch is so vague you can hardly call it a concept.

It's more an intent to produce a compact car, and that, I like.

if only they would produce something that looks like this sketch. the only production lexus i remember thinking was a fantastic looking car was the is200! still looks very modern today. the rest of the lexus range up till date has been a tad dissapointing in the looks department.

This look really good, but I want to see the car, not a teaser drawing.

Does it matter? This is going to be a daily driver, why do you need rwd in a hatchback?

Japs rarely deliver production models that are close to concept models. Wish they're take a risk from time to tome. bloody ad really, Lexus has good build and reliability, hopefully one day they deliver on design.

Don't you worry, Lexus will end up turning that exciting sketch into some dull small car no decent driver will ever care to sample. That's what Lexus does: it 'boring-fies' cars to perfection.
