Mysterious R8 spotted with fixed rear wing and small flaps at the front corners

A Clubsport version of the R8 V10? Why not?

This R8 was spotting doing a few laps around the track at the Nürburgring Nordschleife in Germany. What else could that large, fixed rear wing and those little flaps at each end of the front bumper mean?

Well, it could mean a lot of things, such as a new aerodynamic package.

But let us imagine for a moment that this is a Clubsport prototype intended to put a few added touches of civilized dress around the monstrous heart that beats beneath the bonnet of the R8 V10. A Clubsport version of the R8 V10 would also shed some weight, about 100 to 150 kilograms, and rid itself of the all-wheel drive system.

Inspiration could be had from fellow VW brand Lamborghini, with its Gallardo LP550-2 Valentino Balboni. Turning the R8 V10 into a true racer, capable of incredible aerodynamically and traction-enhanced lap times around that very Nürburgring track.

Yes, and maybe they can add some kind of snooze function to it, so that when taking the car onto the public roads the R8 doesn't fall asleep from all the boredom.

I really like that rear wing. I hope that it is really an option from Audi, not just something aftermarket.

If it ditches Quattro all-wheel-drive let's also hope that it doesn't handle like one too.

I can't imagine they'd ditch Quattro. That would suggest that for real sports driving it's redundant, a message that would harm the rest of the range.

maybe it's a limited edition RS version, the road going R8 GT3.

the article says it is meant for racing/track, and therefore fuel consumption and weight really matters a lot even if it is just or a few kgs or litres, so Audi´s message of AWD being the perfect mixture for a 365 daily driver is still very true. but a racecar/trackcar doesn´t need AWD at all.

Don't get it, why is Audi trying so much to play on Porsches territory? There line-up is more then ok now, they don't need to make a GT2 or GT3 contender. And even if they wanted i don't think they could achief that level of a drivers-car...

Now the R8 will start swimming & say, the fastest audi in water, Fishy very fishy I must say. The diffuser looks good but the wing is hideous & imagine this club sport on the spider then it will looks like a big audi TT.

Why not a light version of the V8, less weight, less expensive. Racing is about saving weight!!!!!!!! but at least it is going the rite direction, take the GT3 as a role model, it is THE driver´s car!

yeah, but look at the GT3, the ultimate driving machine, it has 435BHP and that´s way enough to be a stunning track car. they should take the 4.2L V8, make it 450 BHP (like they are doing for the RS5) and get rid of of the AWD and as much weight as possible.

its cool, but i still hate audi's for they massive holes in front, it looks like something from rieger. :S they should just have kept the front simple and without massive holes...more like a....porsche

QUESTION: What kind of performance would an R8 with a Porsche Cayenne Turbo S, 4.8litre V8 Twin Turbo engine have? In the Cayenne it generates 309kW, 750Nm, 0 - 100 in about 5 seconds. So what if we put it in that smaller, lighter R8 body? Anyone have an idea what 0-100kph and Maximum Speed figures we can get?

wouldnt it be easier to tweak its engine instead of swapping it? a 4.2l v8 twin turbo would sound good :D

they tried with a turbo engine for the R8. they couldn't solve the overheating problem.

I don't know, the thing is the 4.8 V8 Twin Turbo has a Really healthy dose of Torque and I agree with you It Sounds Awesome, i think V8's give the best sound, especially if you install some Magnaflow straight exhausts.

Thanks Scratchy, too bad isn't it, because 750Nm would have made the R8 a real Monster!
