Michael Schumacher has called off his sensational return to formula one.

The seven time world champion, who retired in 2006, recently said he would step in out of "loyalty" to replace the injured Felipe Massa.

He tested a 2007 car at the end of July and was set to conduct two more days in the F2007 this week at Mugello, as concerns lingered about the health of his neck that he injured in a motorcycle testing crash in February.

Schumacher, 40, said on his official website michael-schumacher.de on Tuesday morning that he told Luca di Montezemolo and Stefano Domenicali the bad news on Monday night.

"I really tried everything to make that temporary comeback possible, however, much to my regret, it didn't work out," said the German.

Schumacher confirmed speculation that he actually sustained fractures "in the area of head and neck" in the February fall.

"That is why my neck cannot stand the extreme stresses caused by formula one yet," he explained. "I am disappointed to the core. I am awfully sorry for the guys of Ferrari and for all the fans which crossed fingers for me.

"I can only repeat that I tried everything that was within my power. All I can do now is to keep my fingers crossed for the whole team for the coming races," said Schumacher.

Ferrari said on Tuesday that test driver Luca Badoer will instead drive Massa's car in Valencia and beyond.

"We have decided to give Luca Badoer the chance to race for the Scuderia after he has put in so many years of hard work as a test driver," said president Montezemolo.

yes i wanted him to return, but this was a pure publicity stunt, i know he doesnt need it, but why would he announce his return and give all this hope if he had neck pain from a bike accident a MONTH ago?!

It's a pity, but good luck to Schumi and Ferrari.

How disappointing. It would have been really great to watch him again regardless if he did well or not.

i dont believe this. he was doing numerous testing in the last 2 weeks as training for f1 and out of the blue 2 weeks after his neck is being a problem? if he was thinking of his health at the start, he wouldntve given all that hope to the fans.

his neck was a problem the whole time, that's why he did all those tests.

You know what e36mmm I'm having my suspicions as well.

What better way to cool the recent heat of F1 than to bring back Schumi. It just doesn't make sense to me how he would even want to race again. Lets just stop for a second, 40 years old, neck injury, 7 world titles, just what is the point? Ferrari could plonk any driver in Massa's seat...

That's really bad news, but I smell something wrong over here. How can he test drive the F12007 car & Kart? I had strong doubt that Schumi could not come back out but I never knew it could happen so quick like this. Oh well, it can happen in our dreams that it could happen one day, when Schumi comes back.

I don't believe any of these conspiracy theorists. There is no reason why he would not return as was scheduled. If he and his doctor say his neck is not ready to handle F1 g-forces I see no reason to doubt their words. Everyone knows it would have been good for F1 to have him back.

Se Schumacher não pode correr, então nada mais justo que outro brasileiro substituisse a Felipe Massa. Se Nelsinho Piquet não está mais na Renault, poderiam convidá-lo.

If Schumacher cannot run, then anything fairer than other Brazilian one substituted Felipe Massa. If Nelsinho Piquet is not more in Renault, they could invite him.

It's really disappointing, especially after we had our hopes high, even Lewis was really excited about racing Schumi, but he says "my neck cannot stand the extreme stresses caused by formula one YET" So maybe he might return later. Maybe in 2010 alongside Fernando Alonso, if Felipe is not yet fit!

I do hope he does feature in this season's Codemasters F1 2010 game and that driver transfers will be possible, I'd like to see what a Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso Ferrari Team would look like!

I have tried to get a hold of Schumacher and the Weber group. I have a chiropractic technique that I am sure will help Schumachers problems. Anyone with connections to the weber group please have them contact me.

I am absolutely sure he changed his mind when he was not allowed to do tests in the 2009 car. Simple case of driver ego - he would never gamble his own brand and enter a race without beeing sure he has given himself every chance to do a good result...

I'm absolutely sure you're wrong (see, I can baseless opinions as well). The man had fractures in his neck, and bone never heals completely especially as you get older. He would never have known how his neck would handle the G forces until he did the testing. HE said straight after the testing his neck was sore, and I guess they were hoping it was purely soft tissue soreness. Turns out it was more. Very sad. I agree with whoever said they should have picked Marc Gene, but Badoer will be alright, though not sure how competitive he'll be.

It was publicity stunt or he was just a coward. Maybe both.

Luca Badoer??? What about Gené, who has a better CV than him?? :(

PD: Doesn't a recent Le Mans win count?

Take care Schumi!

Maybe the most important thing at Ferrari is Nationality and length of service, having a better CV and winning the 24hour LeMans only counts if you're Italian. Ferrari is trying to please the home crowd by putting an Italian behind the wheel, they don't care if Marc Gene is a better, more prepared driver. Thats what i see here.

To Genie: That is what's so good with a forum. Everyone is entitled to be "absolutely sure" and beleive what they want.

Good neck or bad neck it is a pity that he won't race. He is still my favvo out there flawed or not. This would have been fantastic for F1 commercially. Also imagine if Schumi would have scored well how that would again heat up things for Luca after his, in the end, sucessfull but highly impopular struggle to push both Schumi and Todt out of Ferrari...

His announcement had allowed everyone to feel excited about his impending return. For a moment, it just showed how F1 had missed an icon. Michael Schumacher will always be tied to F1, and from the reaction, everyone missed having him on the grid. Ferari certainly missed the synergy that Brawn, Todt, and Schumacher brought to the Scuderia. I don't doubt that the team continued to try hard under Domenicali, but errors and equipment failures somehow seemed more frequent under Domenicali. Bad luck? maybe... But I will not speculate on why Schumacher is not coming back. There was always a chance that he would not be able to come back, regardless how much the heart wants to. He knew that the injury was serious, but probably thought after 6 months, it may have healed sufficiently for him to come back. It just goes to show how much we miss seeing him race that we took it for granted that he would definitely be sufficiently fit to return
