A Lamborghini hybrid? How exactly would that work? As in, what can a legendary supercar-maker like Lamborghini do with that kind of technology other than shaving a few points off their fuel-economy numbers?

Well, the details are few, but Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann has told the Germany auto industry weekly Automobilwoche that the technology could first make it to the Gallardo model and that we could see a Gallardo hybrid by 2015.

What details we do have are that the Gallardo hybrid will come with either a V10 or V12 engine, with the car running solely on electric power at low speeds, such as in city driving. That is also saying that the system will not be the same as the current hybrid drives being experimented with in Formula One racing, which are designed to provide bursts of power at a given time.

Could it be that Lamborghini was...inspired...by Ferrari's recent announcement that they would be developing a hybrid drivetrain to be introduced by 2015 too?

One thing Winkelmann has ruled out is a fully-electric Lamborghinis. They can leave that part of the market to Tesla.

Now I really do start to think what Jeremy Clarkson said on S13 E7 is true. Supercars such as the Vantage V12 will not exist anymore. Now Lamborghini are creating hybrid cars. Oh well, Those cars were good when they lasted.

Yes, we have to admit that we are passing into a new era...

And by the way, I liked that episode too, especially the final test drive. Just moves something inside... plenty of regrets, but hopes for the best in the future.

By then M-B will have the all-electric SLS AMG out. According to Morhinweig, the car will provide the same thrilling driving experience as a normal AMG. How they are going to substitute the roar of their V8s, I don't know, but we'll have to reserve judgment. I don't think these cars will lose anything in the performance department by switching to electric. Plus, this planet of ours is far more important than some self-centered need for a car to sound great, that's the bottom line.

you can always rip the electric motor out of your V10 or V12 Lambo and have the purebred bull back.

actually... i'm quite excited to see what will come in the future. honestly, as this technology gets used, it will get better and better, just like when engines were first created, it got better and better. so honestly this probably isn't a bad thing. its the starting of a new automotive era

Im am soooo happy that they are not making them fully electric. This way they can maintain their brand identity as a supercar company. I am very much against hybrids but one that only works at low speeds so u can still have ur kick a** V10 for fun sounds fine to me.

I don't know about you guys but when me and my Lambo are out in our natural habitat, rollin' down Rodeo with chest hair flappin' in the breeze, admiring my reflection in store windows as I cruise past at 15mph in my 560hp Gallardo, I want to hear some Italian engineered thunder to make my ears bleed, not some damn golf-cart soundtrack.

On a less serious note, they could make the hybrid system much like those countless video games where at the press of a button you get a short burst of extra speed. Employing hybrid technology in this fashion could reduce the number of times that Lambo owners would get their asses handed to them by a dude in an old Dodge with a 500ci big block.

actually you'll be surprised how good Lambo fuel economy is compared with other hypercars.

Let's not forget that non-hybrid versions should still be available in the future. They didn't say they will exclusively offer hybrid Gallardos in 2015...my guess is that internal combustion engine will continue to evolve and will receive new clean fuels such as second generation biofuels, hydrogen or natural gas. Many car manufacturers would lose their soul if they convert their cars into full electric vehicles. Long live to V10 roar...
