Toyota's President, Akio Toyoda, has officially confirmed the company will team up with Subaru to develop a new sports car. The announcement, made at an industry conference in northern Michigan, puts to rest rumors that the car has been permanently canceled.

While few details were released, Toyoda said "I want to see Toyota build cars that are fun and exciting to drive." He added that the new sports car would help Toyota accomplish this goal and that he is "...very excited about it..." and plans to fast-track it.

The car is expected to feature sporty styling (as these rendering suggest) and a powerful but fuel efficient engine. Speculation seems to indicate that the car will come equipped with a 2.0-liter Subaru boxer engine that would produce between 118kW (160hp) and 147kW (200hp).

This is the second time the Toyota/Subaru sports car has been green lighted for production. Back in April 2008, Toyota and Subaru released a statement saying a new rear-wheel coupe would arrive in dealerships by the end of 2011. Less than a year later, the car was officially put on hold, when both companies announced the economic downturn had changed their priorities.

I would have hoped the coupe would look like the one in the 2nd pic, but the rear looks too much like a M3. I hope Toyota/Subaru do come up with an original design.

The Genesis coupe is a rip off of the Lexus LF A front end. This is pure Lexus.

the Subaru engine part sounds promising, I just hope Toyota doesn't spoil the "fun" as usual with their unbreakable ECT/TCU encoding

I read something about a law going thru the US Congress that would mandate open access to computer codes (aiming at giving independent mechanics equal access for routine repairs, but should help modders as well)

I like the beige/frontal speculative rendering, mostly because I can imagine it as a Subaru take on Scirocco :-)

I am thrilled!

"Hopefully Toyota doesn't spoil the 'fun' as usual" by overpricing it...

Is it going to be badged as a Toyota or some derivative of the relationship?

I just hope that being combined with Subaru now Toyota will sort their suspension system out. every Toyota i have owned and driven has been a pig to drive fast around corners and even slow around corners, it was a shame because their engines were fantastic.

I hope this is just a rendering of what it could look like and not actually what is to come, cause I see Lexus , Genesis coupe and Scirocco in this rendering.

But having said that, it not bad, wrong colour though

"I want to see Toyota build cars that are fun and exciting to drive." Toyoda Says... Well did they copy that one from Mazda, since when has a Toyota EVER been "FUN AND EXCITING TO DRIVE"

Thanks to the American wankers who have mandated this thick bulky look all in the name of safety, High Hoods, High Windscreens, and Now High Back ends and Trunks. Thanks America for stuffing up car designs...this bulky heavy look may suit Large cars for your fat asses, but ALL small cars are looking stupid because of these rules. Why don't you lot lose some dam weight, instead of looking like porkers. Then we might get back to cars with style.

Don't tell me about Toyota, I've just done £627 on my Starlet 1.3 ... service, new battery and new starter motor. The car's worth as much as my shirt! that's student life for ya!

The gold rendering should ave been what the Lexus IS coupe should have looked like. Loving the aggressive stance. Color combo is pure Top Secret tuning.

replying to ASH there r toyotas that r fun to drive, personally ive taken the Toyota Prado and the Toyota Landcruiser , part from them having bad fuel consumption ratios, they r really fun to drive in the sand dunes, they also have great acc performances for them being made for the dunes, also i can say that they r very well built and parts dont fall off of it from hard dune bashing driving !
