Having been out-BMWed (new word for you) by the current C-Class, Bavaria is keen to return to the top of the compact executive segment. Details apparently uncovered by Autocar point to a revolutionary vehicle ready to be everything to everyone.

As far as design is concerned the next 3 Series should be a step outside of the current look. Previous Director of Design Chris Bangle believed in radical styling changes only after every second generation. Should the new boss Adrian van Hooydonk keep to the same philosophy then we should see a 3 that is only slightly different from the current car come 2011. What is for sure is that it will have exceptional aerodynamics with an expected Cd figure of around 0.24, thanks in part to something called an Air Curtain.

Fuel efficiency is of course the big talking point these days. BMW already has EfficientDynamics as its flagship fuel-saving system. It will be taken to the next level for the 3. An example of this is the use of "black box" technology that currently resides in 3 Series vehicles. One piece of information gathered is that those who pilot 320d models drive the fastest and the longest distances. So the next 320d will take this into account and offer better performance and an even longer per-tank range. Some form of kinetic energy recovery system will be fitted as well.

Turbocharged units will be in full circulation at BMW by the time the 3 Series hits the streets. For its purposes we may see three-cylinder petrol turbo engines of a 1.5-litre displacement delivering about 150hp (112kW) while their diesel counterparts are likely to offer around 300Nm of torque. The 8-speed automatic gearbox first seen in the 7 Series will make its way into the 3 while the 7-speed DCT keeps its exclusive place within the performance models.

The internet is becoming far more important to the automotive world than ever before. Therefore the 3 Series will be well connected and feature technology like real-time traffic information. A new power-efficient air conditioning system is being developed to debut in the range as well.

That sketch of the 3 series looks really hot. So how hard is it for BMW to make the rest of the range look that good?!

It does look good. but the grille is a bit too big IMO. I don't really like the 6 Series like grille that protrudes.

Looks and sounds very interesting, hard to decide whether to go for the 3-Series Coupe LCI or wait for this one, if it's going to be anything like in the sketch.

The diminutive size of the 3 series makes it looks like a toy car in the U.S.

then get an X1. 3 is actually quite a big car. If you want to forgo quality and premium status, you can always get the slightly bigger A4 that's in the same price range, or even cheaper.

I skimmed the Autocar article. This cars looks like it will debut some much needed and, frankly, long overdue technological advances.

Looking forward to it.

so the new car is growing bigger like the E60? i hope the next three will be lighter and more nimble than the current E90 model. weight is everything these days.

Current E90 drives beautifully and sets the bechmark. What do you mean it's not nimble. The advantage of weight is that it adds to rigidity and stability. So we don't actually want the 3 weighting the same as a Fiesta or Nano.

BMW 3 series has always been great car in all views, and the sales confirmed that, there's no need for 5 GT looks.

Sketch looks good!

That sketch it nice.. but I'm worried by the new 3 being everything to everyone.. that means compromise. The whole point of BMW was that they were uncompromised driver's cars -- everything else took second place.

Any, you need glasses. BMW has always been the leader and Audi and to a lesser degree Merc have just been trying to copy BMW. Headlights are traditional BMW style with a wider LED inficator. The bonnect has been inspired by the Z4, grille by the 6 Series and 5GT, X6 for the lower airdam. All new and adapted specially for the new 3 Series in an original design. This is a great BMW design and I see nothing from Audi or Merc in this. furthermore, from the records, the biggest German copy cat is VW's Audi. So eveyone would also agree that BMW would not go so low as to copy from a non-premium, subsidiary company like Audi.

I am not particularly fond of the front grille as I think it should be indented for some dynamic looks.

I want to see what the back looks like, becasue the current E90's biggest weakness is the rear light design. This includes the LCI.

I really hope that the finished product looks like that sketch. I am sure, however, that by being everything to everyone, BMW mean it will become more exclusive (like Jaguar has become)

lets hope so! i heard more 3 series are sold than Ford Mondei's in the UK, so lord knows they're far too common!

i think they're going to launch something with an all-new 1 and 3-series platform. starting with a 3-series GT or the 1-Series first, then maybe the all-new 3-Series. 2011 anyone?

Looks good, but common a 1.5 L3 in a bmw 3 series? Don't, just don't, make a L6 that can also run on 3 of 6 cylinders, like a HEMI
