Michael Schumacher will reportedly be paid 1m euros per race and a bonus 1m euros per victory when he begins substituting for injured Ferrari driver Felipe Massa as from the European grand prix later this month.

The German daily Die Tageszeitung also said the 40-year-old German is very likely to have his non-driving advisory contract with the Maranello based team renewed.

The agreement, estimated to be worth at least 5m euros per season to the seven time world champion, is currently set to expire at the end of 2009.

nice to know that in the current economic climate someone can get that much money for what is essentially driving in a big circle. (i'm not bashing F1, just trying to exaggerate the point for comic effect.)

As much as I would like to agree with you sub39h, but I would bet the reason why they get paid so much is that because 99.9% of the world population would throw up then swallowed back in because of the massive g's these cars produced, not forgetting that most would pee in their pants trying to take corner at such speed!! Add all of that in, and try to win it.......I guess they should be paid that much!!!

geez guys chill out, i was just messing around. i'm fully aware of what these guys go thru to earn that money... i mean Felipe is a prime example of what they risk for their sport. still... 1m EUR per race is a lot of money!! Fighter pilots don't get that much, do they?

how many sponsorship money does a fighter pilot bring to his "team" ? i didn't see any Vodaphone, Red Bull, Intel , etc. stickers on fighter planes :)

Sub39h: I once had the same thought. But after my run on a Toyota F1 Simulator, I knew they deserve every single penny for their skill/bravery/hard-training.

"7 time world champion returns to the world circuit buy your tickets" -- its called hype aka money... they can afford to pay him this much b/c of the hype he will bring... a 40 year old man making a comeback (hopefully) and winning? now that's wicked lol

Schumacher at his prime was making close to 80million euros/year from his racing contract, winning bonuses, and marketing. This is not much when you compare it to something like the likes of Beckham who doesn't even play soccer. A fighter pilot is not part of a multi-billion $/year profitable organization, he risks his life essentially for a charity that plays on people's weakness known as "patriotism".

Totally agree, and concerning soccer (and US Football for that matter), consider that at least F1 drivers risk their lives!

when the news went out that schumi will return everybody was buying F1 tickets again. I bet no one will care who will win the next race in Valencia. All eyes will be on Schumacher.

what! thats rediculous. schumacher said he did it because he felt he owed it to ferrari... er.. yeahhh as if thats all there was to it. £1mil per race is WAY TOO MUCH. its simply unneccessary. he doesnt need that kinda money. and if he felt he owed it to ferrari then why are those mugs paying him that much
