Toyota/Subaru Coupe artist rendering

The Subaru brand has not exactly been the prime example of a fuel-efficient automaker. Its recent partner Toyota has been missing from boys' posters of their favourite hot hatches and sports cars. Together the companies decided to rectify this situation by creating the 086A Project, a small sports car destined to take the best of both; performance with fuel-efficiency.

So far it's been going well but the eco snag has hit the project harder, possibly because of the current state of the world economy but more so because of tighter government pressures. The result of all this is that the 086A will now get less power from its rumoured 2.0-litre boxer engine. What was thought to be a 147kW (200hp) spicy two-door has instead turned into a 118kW (160hp) mild ginger. Incidentally the two respective power figures appear on the VW Scirocco's spec sheet as well. Never mind we are told, the car has also lost some weight to counter this sudden power-shedding.

More still is that the primary target market has shifted from a younger set to buyers between 30 and 50 years of age. The much-depleted Tokyo Motor Show coming up in October will provide the first official public glimpse of Project 086A and executives are sure to be present in order to gauge public reaction.

It will depend on the weight of the car, plus there are always aftermarket parts that can raise your power and I doubt that this will be the only engine for this car.

actually, if they could pull off the supra's 276bhp twin turbo JZA8x 3L engine then im sure they'd sell alot more of this car then they would if its going to be released as the 160bhp scirocco knockoff.

If Toyota made that exactly like the artist's rendering it would be the best looking Toyota of all time...and Subaru as well for that matter

Toyota don't need to make good looking cars, they have Lexus for that.

That target market change, it's only a marketing strategy aiming to those nostalgics who had an AE86 Corolla in the 80's and 90's.

That may be true but this 86 isn't the 4 seater liftback the original was. From the looks of the rendering i'd say this is more aimed at the 1 series crowd.

160bhp. If it is very light, then it would be an awesome modern day AE86!

first why boxer 4. second why 160HP. third this is most likely going weight more than MX5 and Genesis, so it has lost the competition already. plus i believe it will have that a Subaru AWD system which kills all the chances of over steering and power sliding. however it looks better than MX5 and genesis.

No it won't have AWD system, both cars will be RWD.

So the watering down begins. Don't expect it to look this good when it comes out. Sad, but most likely true.

Lookwise, for a Toyota, that's not bad at all...

Toyota (or Subaru for that matter, they have had some shockers over the years) can not make good looking cars...give me a Mazda MX-5 ANY-DAY, better looking, more classical, and a motoring ICON. Imagine how HEAVY this thing will be if it is AWD. YUK

Than a 1.8 will do also, I'm still really looking forward to it

Toyota's dependability and Subaru's expertise...sound's like my next car. Just have to decide whether to buy the Toyota version or the Subaru when they come out. Nice.

Super, a RWD coupe with a sweet sounding boxer engine. If it is light and have a proper mechanical (maybe Torsen) LSD, I am selling my MX5!
