2010 Saab 9-5

More interesting, less attractive?

Several new high quality photos of Saab's upcoming 2010 9-5 sedan have surfaced.

Like the first batch of leaked photos, these new images show additional details about the car's design. The 9-5 features unique exterior mirrors which consist of three different sections: body color, integrated LED turn signals, and blackened upper trim (like the A-pillars). Other interesting design traits include chrome detailing on the lower front quarter panels and attractive LED taillights.

Inside, the cabin appears tastefully decorated with high quality plastics, a center console-mounted ignition, and aggressively bolstered leather seats. This adds up to a cockpit that is easily recognizable as a Saab, despite featuring a few pieces from the GM parts-bin.

Petrol power will likely be provided by three turbocharged engines including a 1.6-liter four-cylinder with 160hp, a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 210hp, and a 2.8-liter V6 with 300hp. On the diesel side, we can expect two turbocharged units which will produce 160hp and 190hp. Future variants may include a petrol-electric hybrid and a biofuel model.

As we have previously reported, the 2010 9-5 rides on a "sportier" version of GM's Epsilon II platform which also underpins the Opel Insignia and Buick LaCrosse. The new platform allows for additional interior room and optional all-wheel drive.

Expect the new 9-5 to hit European showrooms in April 2010, with a base price around €35,000.

I like this car! I think it's nice refreshment for Saab and I can't wait to see it in person!

This car is growing on me! I love it's hockey stick signature window from SAABs of yore and that sloping roofline. Interiors are typical Swedish "IKEA"ish type, read air vents. The dials look cool & IMHO this is the first SAAB I've ever loved! Good going SAAB!

It grows on me (lots of lovely detailing), but the rear still looks a bit weird, a bit ugly skoda superb weird, not old saab quirky weird. The wagon could be fantastic. I hope it sells well.

These new images with unskewed profiles tell the whole story. Although there are obvious areas where there could be a better design details-overall this 9-5 is starting to grow on me.

Am I the only one here that feels this is boring?

I think this is going to be another Jaguar-Ford type of story. Just when Ford sold Jaguar and Rover to TATA, Jag came out with the new range of models that are doing phenomenal business and winning accolades from auto journalists across the world. Now that GM has sold SAAB, they are coming out with such good models.

I feel sorry for GM...

I really like the rear and the overall line of the car, it's saabishly original, the way saab should be. Their recent cars were really nothing special, this one is. I'm not sure about the extra long tail lights though.

While having never actually seen or driven this car, it appears GM has finally done Saab the justice it deserves (although, a little too late for GM to truly benefit). The Epsilon II is a great place to start, insuring solidity and packaging efficiency if nothing else. From photos it appears GM has paid close attention to the details, executing them consistently, if not quite "perfectly". I'm impressed. GM's usual "to hell with the details, full steam ahead!" seems to be missing from this product example. Congratulations Saab, there just may be a profitable future for you yet!

Design is a little understated but that's always been true for Saab. I do like it, kind of looks like the butched up the Insignia. It's a huge leap from the current (old) generation. Would like to see hatch and wagon.

I like it overall, however the discontinued chrome finish at the bottom looks odd. As well, the hockey stick is cool, but a full trim line would be more in line with the price competition and better highlight the blacked out a-pillar. That said it does look like a real step forward, esp inside where it finally has grown up and stopped looking like a GM parts bin. Likely for aerodynamics, the trunk slope looks a bit lazy and poorly resolved. Scale of 1 to 10, I give is a solid 7.9.

i can see the general idea of this design - to recapture the quirkiness that made SAAB great before GM drove a wrecking ball through that marque, but they missed it by quite a bit... i cant find one pic with any clean lines on this car. Every angle on this car just scream woulda, coulda and shoulda. The rear end is reminescence of the Hyundai Azera to me, however the light treatment on the tailight is a nice touch. The interior is nice and stately yet sporty at the same time but those fake carbon fiber treatment gotta go! I hope they put a SAAB turbo-ed version of GM's 3.6 V6 into this 9-5 with the right tranny it could really compete.

In the 3rd pic the badge says TTiD4 so does that mean one or both diesels are twin turbos?

A new DESIGN-ICON!. This car will stand the test of time. Absolutely brilliant! Cool! A designer myself, I think it has the same class as APPLE Product design. AND: Have you ever tested the feeling of driving a SAAB? After this, you will know for shure: there is no better way of driving. My next car: SAAB!
