New details have emerged about Toyota's upcoming Prius-based coupe.

The unnamed hybrid, which could revive the MR-2 nameplate, will compete directly with Honda's CR-Z hybrid. Although little is known about the car's exterior styling, it is expected be to completely unique with a sporty flair.

Riding on a shortened version of the Prius' platform, the coupe will offer a 2+2 seating arraignment and a cabin heavily influenced by the standard Prius.

Power is expected to come from a modified version of the Prius' hybrid powertrain. This means we can expect a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine with 136PS, instead of 99PS. While it won't soothe enthusiasts, the coupe should offer a stellar fuel economy rating of 48 mpg (US).

Look for the hybrid coupe to be unveiled in mid-2012, with a base price slightly above the Prius' $22,000 MRSP.

that looks like a nice mesh between Lexus IS, Toyota Celica. After an engine swap, this thing would be hot!

Wow, that looks so cool! Too bad it is Toyota, so the real verison is going to be prius-ified.

No, it's not. It looks a bit like that awesome FT-HS Concept.

Looks nice in a generic sort of way. I do have to admit that I see some Genesis about its looks, but I doubt the genuine article will look anything like this.

Shame Toyota don't launch it as the New Celica...

People have to know that this is not an official sketch from Toyota. Is just an artist interpretation of a Japanese magazine. Probably they got hints from a Toyota insider but this could not be considered as the real thing. In 2-3 years their design language might vary from this illustration which resembles having a Solara front-end, but still is a good interpretation by knowing that Toyota likes to play safe in their products by just releasing 'conservative' looking cars. I agree they should go with the FT-HS design direction.

Toyota don't do "sporty flair" very well.

They're not so good on the "handling flair" either...

...and the only time they did produce decent handling cars was decades ago when they had some joint venture with Lotus... coincidence that?

That looks incredible. Yet, I'm pretty sure that the real one will look just as bad or even worse than the current prius....
