GM to Sell Chevy Volt on Ebay

2011 Chevrolet Volt

A nicer way to rip people off?

When GM emerged from bankruptcy, the company announced it was in talks with eBay to sell vehicles on the auction site. This sounded peculiar at a time when hundreds of dealers were being shut down, but the reasoning behind it is starting to become clearer.

In an interview with autocar, Chevrolet's brand manager, Ed Peper, stated that selling Volts on eBay was "...something that's definitely crossed our mind." The online auction format would allow GM to sell the highly prized Volt at a premium (due to bidding wars), without having to get a bad rap for huge dealer markups. This would undoubtedly help GM to recoup the massive investment they have poured into the Volt's development.

As we have previously reported, the 2011 Volt features an advanced electric drive unit that produces 150 hp and 273 lb-ft (370 Nm) of torque. Power is provided by a 16-kWh lithium-ion battery, which enables the Volt to travel up to 40 miles before the gasoline engine kicks in to recharge it.

No word yet on when to expect the Volt to make its eBay debut, but the car should begin arriving at dealerships sometime in 2010.

You mean ripping off buyers directly, I hope the auction starts at 0.99p and no one bids to the very last second that could mean the Volt would cost them even more ;o))

totally agreed! got to "create" a buyers' alliance, to ensure NOT place bit on it & wait 'til the last minute/ second or so, in order to make GM suffer huge loss for their stupid marketing mistake, AGAIN. that's the best idea the "good/ new" GM can came up with? shame on them & shame on those high-pay executives.

I don't know if selling cars on ebay is a good business model. Ebay items tend to be bid downward.....i.e. the marginal price for each item is less, until it gets down to a price that is usually less than "blue book". People go to ebay precisely to get deals...I am interested to see how this would work. I hope GM finds a good model though - I am really rooting for them and hope they get it right this time.

I can't believe I'm paying hard earned tax dollars to keep this rip off of a company afloat. We the people are the ones in desperate need of a stimulus plan not a bunch of old rich men who keep on trying to rip us off. I stay loyal to foreign cars built in the U.S.

Did GM really need to stuff flowers in the trunk so everybody understands this piece of junk is supposed to be a green car?

Being that it isn't out yet and there haven't been any real tests by the motoring press, why is it a piece of junk? Because it is from GM? Because it is from the US?

That idea is crazy enough were it just might work. Like Narco, I'm rooting for them (so that the government can recoup the loans).

"(due to bidding wars)" Yeaaah right. People fight for money or girls, not for flashy hybrids.

The few people that might actually end up interested in this, will be better off with the Tesla S, it's greener and way faster, if a bit more expensive (I'm pretty sure that both treehuggers and speedheads wouldn't mind a few extra bucks).

The Volt is supposed to come in (loaded) under $40K with a tax credit of several thousand to bring it down to the low $30Ks. With the recharging gas engine, it will have a higher distance envelope after it has exhausted its daily plug-in charge. Even with fewer GM dealers, it will have more accessible service.

The S is a beautiful machine. At this point, I don't think Tesla has disclosed from whom they are leveraging the car part of the car from. It will have a limited range and, unlike the Volt, will require an electrical recharge to keep moving. I'm betting it will come in at a much higher price point.

For those not fortunate enough to have a fleet of personal vehicles, the Volt will be more practical, but the S will be infinitely sexier. The really are for different markets.

Is there a funeral going on back there in the trunk? GM's own, maybe?

Not a bad idea at all. Anyone willing to pay should be allowed to for this pioneering technology, and ebay is an excellent way to test the waters without upsetting the public. Let's hope people see this car as a high quality beautiful machine and plunk down enough to spark more green innovations.

Honestly (and please reply) does this car appeal to ANYONE here. Anyone actually waiting to buy this, what GM calls a revolutionary car???
