Honda NSX development shifts to new super hybrid sports car - report

The Honda NSX may yet surface but not as the 5.5-litre V10 rocket that it was initially supposed to be. Having shelved the project in late 2008 reports suggested that virtually nothing could be done by Honda to salvage it. That is until now.

It appears that automakers are steadily shifting towards the green sports car and the NSX could be the next one on the list. A rumour has surfaced that says not only is the NSX back on track but it will now ditch the petrol V10 for a next generation "valveless throttle" 3.5-litre V6 with a hybrid system.

In total the car would produce about 330kW (450PS), effectively taking it out of Nissan GT-R territory and putting it squarely against the Toyota FT-HS as well as the likes of the Audi RS 5 and the BMW M3. However the added weight of the batteries and other hybrid apparatus could negate its performance potential. So the times previously posted by the V10 at the Nurburgring might be revised.

The company's SH-AWD system is to be used and placed on an aluminium platform. No launch dates are yet mentioned, but given that the original V10 car was expected to launch in 2010, the hybrid version could follow along similar lines.

Certainly doesn't stand out like the old model. Low slung and sleek worked. This, no. Might as well call it an Accord Si-R GT F1 R-spec SH-AWD Hybrid.

Japanese hybrid sports cars are a great idea! First Toyota's one, then the CR-Z, now this. Awesome!

lame...follow Toyota's idea...come on, Honda! you can do way better! remember NSX was a pacesetter? it was the born of exotic sport car from Japan! Honda SHOULD do something like that instead...head to head with GT-R & Lexus...

This can go head to head with the GT-R, if it will have 450hp + another 50hp from 1 or 2 electric motors and good aerodynamics.

oh man ! this is too bad , we want the V10 and not the hybrid , we don't give a f... about it .We want it to compete with the GT-R and 911 TURBO and not the M3 , come on Honda , you can do way better !! and to say the truth , i like the design of the previous NSX better , this one looks kinda ugly !

i'm disappointed. they know they don't have a chance against the big boys and are trying the "eco friendly" approach. i hope the M division makes that diesel car to teach these hybrids a lesson.

thank you! i wonder what these hybrids are good for anyway?! most of those "eco-solutions" arent worth a penny. if you want eco go for a diesel! or a full eletric car.

Nissan will make this car before before Honda, but only full electric. Hell, it already looks like a Z. So Honda please just make the new NSX, I think you've made people wait long enough.

I'm not giving up my hopes yet about the new NSX. Yup it is green and may not be as competitive as the GT-R. Honda has always been surprising us with a lot of cool stuff and always make things better. So we will see.

Honda stop talking about it, get off the pot already and build it or shut up about it. The NSX was a awesome car, But I am tierd of being jerked around for years about it.

it will accelerate fast until the batteries die , then the batteries and the electric motor(s) will only be dead weight, killing the handling.

Park the original Ayrton Senna-inspired NSX to this so-called modern version and it would resemble any of three cars in Honda's vintage/new model line-up: CRX, CRZ & Prelude. Honda has far more superior F1 heritage than Toyota, but see what Lexus benefitted from by making (and selling out) the LF-A! This is undoubtedly a missed opportunity for Honda in the 22nd Century because they have Honda-estimated their own history. For the record, Toyota remains the global hybrid engine king, but they still shoved a 4.7litre V10 lump inside the Lexus LF-A!
