In a surprise announcement, Alfa Romeo has apparently abandoned development of the sexy MiTo GTA.

Echoing Aston Martin's cancelation of the Lagonda SUV Concept, an unnamed Alfa Romeo spokeswoman has stated the "MiTo GTA has been put on hold." In an interview with iMotor, she added that, "It's hard to justify building such as high performance car at this present time as the financial crisis means that it's not economically viable. And, sadly, it may never be."

Originally shown in concept form at the Geneva Motor Show, the MiTo GTA was to be powered by 240 hp 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with direct injection and dual variable valve timing. Boasting aggressive styling, a sportier suspension, and a light weight diet, the MiTo GTA was poised to be an enthusiast's dream come true.

About time.....I mean they weren't really gonna embarrass themselves with the squint pig dog and a hideous price tag.

I do not like the looks of the MiTo but I was interested in seeing a GTA version. It is unfortunate to hear of Alfa Romeos abandoning of the project.

If you ask me, it's a joke, just to increase more the interest for the car. There is no sense to make the 500 Abarth at 18 000 EUR and kill the GTA, car that could do the 25 000 EUR standard. We will see in the future, but i hold my ideea, it will be real the GTA 100 %.

Rediculous statement. The Mito stock is a fanstastic car - probably the best in it's segment at present. Great engine, build, 7 airbags, tons of electronic gadgetry for a highly competitive price. Yes, sad to see this won't come out, but they'll nail big sales with Mito. I don't see how that won't happen when looking in-depth at the new release.

Why do they do it, why tease us. The stuff we actually want, they never make, they stuff that we don't want, they force on us.

They should have built the NSC
