This is actually a fantastic design, as the A5 Sportback is built to be a variant of the A5 Coup? which is a member of the Mittelklasse A4/A5 family. BMW differentiated the design of the 3er Limousinen and Coup?, and it should also be noticed that A4 and A5 have quite different designs as well, especially the surfaces of the side panels and different interpretations of the Tornado Line. It is a correct decision that a family of products (based on the same platform) should be sharing a similar design trait in order to emphasize the technical similarities and the approximity of their market segments and price ranges: Mercedes-Benz even uses the E-Klasse design trait on both the E-Klasse Limousinen and the C-Klasse based E-Klasse Coup?.

It is ok. It is a clean design, unlike BMW's recent X1. But it is kind of boring as well. I still don't understand why this is here as we already have the A4. Audi built the A5 coupe based on the A4 and using mostof its A4 parts. Now they build another 4 door usign the Coupe. WTF? It's like BMW building a 4 door 3 Series Coupe. Maybe they can charge customer more with this A5 body although it is basically an A4. Bear in mind that a normal non-Quattro version has been proven to hadle worse than the A4.

HAAAAAAAAAAA! Same again design, yawn yawn and yawn! Are they ever going to break from this theme? I cant wait til buyers start getting bored and sales plummet, that would teach them a lesson! Rubbish! And to think Audi use to be my favorite brand

Well the great news is that if you want an Audi but don't like audi looks, just choose another VAG product.

Agreed!!!!!!!!!!!! All Audi's are the same, you don't know the difference until you see the writing. This is the perfect word: boring!!!!!!!!!

i`d rather drive sleek and boring (for some) than weird and ugly (Bimmers)

Seems like a lot of people like the weird and ugly look. Lucky for BMW most people who have money, have no taste.

true most people with money have no taste, thats why you see car brands like this continue to make the same looking thing over and over. continue to make what sells the most. thats what they're thinking.

Have you guys thought about it this way, maybe the people with money have taste. Its just different to the people who cant afford a BMW or Merc. BMW and Merc make cars that look different so thy stand out so that people can see them,so people who have money and are succesfull can show it off. And personally i think that Bmw's cars look great.

A lot of people go on about how each model in the BMW lineup looks very different, however not too long ago (in the late 90's, early millenium) most of their models shared their design features with one another, which looked very good (it was probably the high point of their design). Look at the old 5 series, 7 series etc from that time. They were very similar in design, but very good. They are one of the reasons BMW are where they are today. Most Audi's share common design elements but they are all good. Its a shame BMW lost their way when Bangle came in and bungled it all up. I hope that the same doesn't happen to Audi. And besides people don't complain about Aston Martins etc looking the same do they?

Sorry xenomorph, but you do realise that whatyou said is just your opnioin. In my opnion, many new BMWs are very good looking, in and out. And if you place the cars next to each other (rival to rival, BMW is definately the better looking one). Look at the 3 Series catagory, the 3 looks so much better than the A4, and the c Class probably beats the rest. A6 cat: 5 is the best looking. Do you think Audi's Q7 look better than the X5? or lets say the A3 couvert looks better than the 1 Series convert. Well, if you do, you are the minority. As for the person up here who said that people who are rish and buy BMWs have no taste: I have bad news for you. BMW is the best selling premium car maker. So you are effectively saying that most people who are rich and educated have no taste.... maybe you should re-evaluate your own taste, maybe you still belong in the VW Group stable (incl Audi). All I can say is that deisng is a subjective matter. To me, this A5 is clean looking, yet can be very broing. The rear is a bit ugly, too. but not as ugly as the X1. As for most of the people in this market chosing BMW: maybe becasue BMW is original and distinctive, great quality with no parts sharing with lower grades - afterall this seems to be what the educated seem to value.

whats so special about this ugly whale ? i have no feeling when i look at it, its just the same with other brother, sister like A4, A4 wagon, A5 coupe, ..Lame for audi, keep producing clones until you finish a soccer team. whole Designing office should have been fired for their working attitude

exactly. the tragedy is that we have fools in this world who will think this is a great and fork out so much more for Audi and VW to profit. Shame!

nice car but has the same problem as all audis have - it?s nothing special and nothing which lets you go "WOW - I MUST HAVE THIS"

exactly, Audi have lost the wow feeling about them, because they have cloned their cars.

Borring yes, but at least not dead ugly like the BMW 5 GT... But i have a hard time to see the point of the A5 Sportsback...? Isn't the choice just a A4 Limosine?

IMO the A5 (non-Sportback) has never looked that good in photos, but did look pretty good in the metal... I presume the same would be true of this Sportback!

Audi Designs are boring but they still sell lots of cars same as BMW and Merc. Do you know why? because people who buy audi knows how great the car is not like people who buy cars because of their looks.

that's the reason why BMW is no.1

The 5GT has more WOW factor dan all the A4s A5s and A6s because its different not just a bigger 3 or 5 series. Yes this is a good looking car but I wud hve loved 2 c a different car esp after the great TT and R8

I want to not like this car, but I'll admit it looks good in red with the sport wheels. The silver is blah. It looks like more of a porker than the coupe AND it has the 2.0T instead of the V6. Somebody tell me why Audi needs this car in their lineup when the A4 is built on the same chassis as the A5 and the A6 already fills the mid/full sedan slot? BTW, I wonder if Audi will produce a S5 Sportback.

What people fail to notice is that the A5 Sportback is not a 5er GT competitor. It might have a arched roofline but that's where the similarities end. The A5 has none of the utility of the 5er GT and is more a car than a "van". Look at the R-Class and see how BMW has trumped that in all departments. That is the only vehicle in the same sort of class. I just don't understand the point of this car, what it offers more than an A4 or A5...The Sportback does look elegant though, nice way of doing the fastback design.

the way i see it , this car is for the young active male that needs some space but wants something more dynamic looking than a wagon. i would put a downpayment for this in a second if they made an allroad version.

i think that this is what the A4 should have been all along. the A4 is nice from some angles, but the rear is too long. this has much better proportions, and a sporting pretension which a lot of buyers go for.

Just what is Audi paying their designers for? Its the same design as every other model even the bumpers are the same! The car looks boring because their designers don't have anything to do! I would pick a Merc CLS or a Passat CC over this anytime!

those Audi designers sure have a nice job , don't they ? :) but this is another version of an existing model, that's why it has the same design. as for the designers , they are busy working on the A1, A7, Q3, and the new A8.

Why is everyone complaining that it looks boring? This is an A5 Sportback. Which means it's an A5. So it looks like an A5. Wtf?

they are upset because it has no wings, no DTM and Le Mans spoilers, no flames coming out of the exhaust and the rims don't spin the opposite way !

I think the idea of making an A7 sportback is really stupid... Audi should present the A7 in a special way, like the Mercedes S or BMW 7. I cant imagine a mercedes S sportback... I also cant understand why Audi is anxious about willing to built a new car every year. They have to slow down because car fans have to be excited while waiting the release of a car.
July 16, 2009 11:14 am
 scratchy996 scratchy996
Audi was the only company with a growth in sales during the crisis, i think they know what they are doing. the A7 is a good idea. with the release of the Panamera more people will want something similar but with a better price/better looks. it's the perfect timing for the A7. look what happened with GM and keeping people waiting for a new car.

Geez..enough of this fighting, guys. Btw, A5 Sportback does look sleek IMO. Thats normal for Audi having similar looking cars because they are afraid to use new design theme for each car. So they are sticking to one design theme. Still the results are effective. I'm not sure but A5 Sportback is the only closest rival for BMW 5er GT.
