Audi officially went public with the new Audi A5 Sportback today following months of leaks, teasers, photo shoots, and spy shots. We have seen undisguised photos of the A5 Sportback before, but never this many, and never so high quality.
The vehicle features a smooth design that makes the car look much less like a wagon than the A3 Sportback, while sitting 36mm lower than the A4 sedan. Frameless doors definitely add to the car's clean look. The nicely-angled side windows, ringed in chrome, show off a sporty look with a flowing roofline.
Inside, customers can create either a monotone or contrasting look. Four individual seats are surrounded with a comfortable amount of space no matter how big the passenger. At 480 liters, Audi also provided nearly the same amount of cargo space as the A4 Avant.
Under the hood, we were hoping for at least one higher-powered engine. Three petrol engines include 180 and 211 horsepower variants of the 2.0-liter TFSI unit, and a 3.2-liter V6 model providing 265 horsepower. If it is diesel you prefer, you can choose the incredibly efficient 2.0-liter TDI. The 170 hp unit uses just 5.2 liters of fuel per 100 km, or rougly 45+ mpg. A start/stop system helps increase fuel efficiency. The other TDI engines are a 190 hp 2.7-liter unit and a 3.0-liter, 240 horsepower model. The 2.0 TFSI quattro, the 3.2 FSI quattro and the 3.0 TDI quattro models are available with the seven-speed S-tronic gearbox.
Audi will release three more engines for the A5 Sportback within the next year. Each petrol model, and the highest-powered TDI, is fitted with Audi's "quattro" all-wheel drive system, while customers purchasing one of the two most powerful engines may also add on a newly offered sport differential which distributes the drive power in continuously variable proportions between the rear wheels. Those not receiving quattro instead get a stability unit that helps prevent understeer with an electronic front differential. The 180 hp 2.0-liter TFSI engine also gets the stability program.
Orders are already being taken for the Audi A5 Sportback, at a base price of €33,650. The vehicle will be featured in dealerships beginning in September. A lower-priced version will also be released next year, making the Sportback the entry-level trimline for the A5 series. Audi will likely also release an A7 Sportback by the end of 2010. That car could come with the option of a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 or a V8.

The Audi A5 Sportback - the best of three worlds
Audi is presenting a new vehicle concept - the Audi A5 Sportback. The five-door model with the long, flowing rear end unites the best of various vehicle genres: the emotion and elegance of a coupe, the comfort of a sedan and the practicality of a station wagon. The Sportback joins the Coupé and Cabriolet as the third member of the A5 model family.
The A5 Sportback will be rolling into Audi dealerships in September featuring an emotion-packed design, high everyday practicality, a sporty character and engines that are as efficient as they are powerful. Sales have already begun, with prices starting at 33,650 euros. A further, specially-priced model to follow in 2010 will make the A5 Sportback the entry-level model in the A5 model series.
Audi, the inventor of the Avant, is setting new trends in design with the A5 Sportback. The five-door coupe is defined by elegant lines. It is 36 millimeters (1.42 in) lower than the A4 Sedan; with its short front overhang, long wheelbase, wide track and the four frameless doors with their slender window lines, it is the very picture of sporty elegance.
The interior is spacious, offering uncompromising comfort in all four seats. The large luggage compartment hatch is harmoniously integrated into the long, tapered tail end with the flat C pillars; the spoiler lip underscores the tension-filled character. The luggage compartment volume of 480 liters (16.95 cu ft) nearly matches that of the A4 Avant and increases to 980 liters (34.61 cu ft) with the rear seats folded down.
The A5 Sportback follows the consistent path of innovative technologies at Audi when it comes to the drivetrain. All of the engines are highly-efficient direct injection models - TDI for the cultivated diesels, FSI for the gasoline engines - and all comply with the Euro 5 emissions standard.
All models are equipped with a recuperation system that recovers energy during braking and deceleration and stores it temporarily in the battery.
Audi is initially offering three gasoline and three TDI engines, with three more engines to follow by mid-2010. The gasoline engines - the two-liter TFSI with 132 kW (180 hp) or 155 kW (211 hp) and the 3.2-liter V6 with 195 kW (265 hp) - are equipped with the Audi valvelift system for variable control of valvelift. The intelligent technology boosts performance while simultaneously reducing fuel consumption.
The 2.0 TDI produces 125 kW (170 hp) and consumes on average a frugal 5.2 liters of fuel per 100 km (45.23 US mpg). It is coupled with the start-stop system, which further enhances fuel efficiency in city traffic. The 140 kW (190 hp) 2.7-liter TDI offers even more power. The 3.0 TDI, which also features the S tronic, puts out an impressive 176 kW (240 hp).
Like the three gasoline engines, the top diesel engine delivers its power to the quattro permanent all-wheel drive system. The two most powerful engines are optionally available with the newly developed sport differential, which variably distributes power between the rear wheels and provides even greater dynamics, driving pleasure and safety. The two TDI models with front-wheel drive - the 2.0 TDI and 2.7 TDI - and the 2.0 TFSI (132 kW / 180 hp) benefit from another Audi innovation: The ESP stabilization program with electronic front differential lock increases agility and prevents understeer.
The perfect complement is the Audi drive select vehicle dynamics system, which enables the driver to freely vary the throttle response characteristic, the shifting points of the seven-speed S tronic, and the boost provided by the servotronic steering system, which comes standard (from power outputs of 140 kW (190 hp) upwards). The system is offered as a modular package with at least one of the following three options: sport differential, adaptive shock absorber control or dynamic steering with variable boost.

BMW differentiated the design of the 3er Limousinen and Coupé, and it should also be noticed that A4 and A5 have quite different designs as well, especially the surfaces of the side panels and different interpretations of the Tornado Line.
It is a correct decision that a family of products (based on the same platform) should be sharing a similar design trait in order to emphasize the technical similarities and the approximity of their market segments and price ranges: Mercedes-Benz even uses the E-Klasse design trait on both the E-Klasse Limousinen and the C-Klasse based E-Klasse Coupé.

Maybe they can charge customer more with this A5 body although it is basically an A4. Bear in mind that a normal non-Quattro version has been proven to hadle worse than the A4.
This is the perfect word: boring!!!!!!!!!
As for the person up here who said that people who are rish and buy BMWs have no taste: I have bad news for you. BMW is the best selling premium car maker. So you are effectively saying that most people who are rich and educated have no taste.... maybe you should re-evaluate your own taste, maybe you still belong in the VW Group stable (incl Audi). All I can say is that deisng is a subjective matter. To me, this A5 is clean looking, yet can be very broing. The rear is a bit ugly, too. but not as ugly as the X1. As for most of the people in this market chosing BMW: maybe becasue BMW is original and distinctive, great quality with no parts sharing with lower grades - afterall this seems to be what the educated seem to value.

But i have a hard time to see the point of the A5 Sportsback...? Isn't the choice just a A4 Limosine?
I presume the same would be true of this Sportback!
I just don't understand the point of this car, what it offers more than an A4 or A5...The Sportback does look elegant though, nice way of doing the fastback design.
i would put a downpayment for this in a second if they made an allroad version.
I would pick a Merc CLS or a Passat CC over this anytime!
but this is another version of an existing model, that's why it has the same design. as for the designers , they are busy working on the A1, A7, Q3, and the new A8.
Which means it's an A5.
So it looks like an A5.
Wtf?
look what happened with GM and keeping people waiting for a new car.
Btw, A5 Sportback does look sleek IMO. Thats normal for Audi having similar looking cars because they are afraid to use new design theme for each car. So they are sticking to one design theme. Still the results are effective.
I'm not sure but A5 Sportback is the only closest rival for BMW 5er GT.
Now that´s not to say I´d buy it, I´d go for the A4 Avant over this one in the blink of an eye. Mores pace and practicality and same driving dynamics, but that´s just me wanting my station wagon to look like a station wagon. I don´t see the point in having all these weird body styles just because they look different, but it´s clear that the market is driving the manufacturers towards this. It seems if you build them the buyers will come!
It also has a flat-looking bench rear seat, which is practical for carrying 5 people but not very sporty. So what makes this model a fit for the A5 image more than the A4?
At least it's way prettier than the 5GT...but I'd still rather have a stylish, sporty and functional wagon like an A4 Avant.
THNKS ;)

Audi's corporate tag line is Vorsprung durch Technik, meaning "Advantage through Technology" or Truth in Engineering. This could not be better said and compared to production that is quiet yet so explosive with less talk and more action unlike other ones such as 1st on the most talking show BMW and its supporters.

If you are going to make a car like this, at least make it look different. Not only did this copy BMW's GT concept and X6, it also used the same design as the A5. This is premium class, customers expect exceptional quality and design. Cut and paste or using too much for the same car is dreadful. This is also the reason why an independent company like BMW can strive for creativity whereas a VW company like Audi design for the lost common denominator. Not only do they need to get creative ideas from BMW and Merc, they also need to beg VW to use thier Polo engines and brakes on the new Audi in order to generate more profit per unit - which they are leading at the moment. Why? becasue customers buy junk thinking it's premium.
But doesnt mean A5 Sportback comes from sh*thole as claimed by these stewpid BMW fan boys. A5 Sportback does deserve some credit. It looks cool & sporty too.
p.s. i am not bmw fan.. i don't even have one.. i am a MB guy...
that is my point because I live in another side of world, so I know how people though and what they want
