Audi officially went public with the new Audi A5 Sportback today following months of leaks, teasers, photo shoots, and spy shots.  We have seen undisguised photos of the A5 Sportback before, but never this many, and never so high quality.

The vehicle features a smooth design that makes the car look much less like a wagon than the A3 Sportback, while sitting 36mm lower than the A4 sedan.  Frameless doors definitely add to the car's clean look.  The nicely-angled side windows, ringed in chrome, show off a sporty look with a flowing roofline.

Inside, customers can create either a monotone or contrasting look.  Four individual seats are surrounded with a comfortable amount of space no matter how big the passenger.  At 480 liters, Audi also provided nearly the same amount of cargo space as the A4 Avant.

Under the hood, we were hoping for at least one higher-powered engine.  Three petrol engines include 180 and 211 horsepower variants of the 2.0-liter TFSI unit, and a 3.2-liter V6 model providing 265 horsepower.  If it is diesel you prefer, you can choose the incredibly efficient 2.0-liter TDI.  The 170 hp unit uses just 5.2 liters of fuel per 100 km, or rougly 45+ mpg.  A start/stop system helps increase fuel efficiency.  The other TDI engines are a 190 hp 2.7-liter unit and a 3.0-liter, 240 horsepower model.  The 2.0 TFSI quattro, the 3.2 FSI quattro and the 3.0 TDI quattro models are available with the seven-speed S-tronic gearbox.

Audi will release three more engines for the A5 Sportback within the next year.  Each petrol model, and the highest-powered TDI, is fitted with Audi's "quattro" all-wheel drive system, while customers purchasing one of the two most powerful engines may also add on a newly offered sport differential which distributes the drive power in continuously variable proportions between the rear wheels.  Those not receiving quattro instead get a stability unit that helps prevent understeer with an electronic front differential.  The 180 hp 2.0-liter TFSI engine also gets the stability program.

Orders are already being taken for the Audi A5 Sportback, at a base price of €33,650.  The vehicle will be featured in dealerships beginning in September.  A lower-priced version will also be released next year, making the Sportback the entry-level trimline for the A5 series.  Audi will likely also release an A7 Sportback by the end of 2010.  That car could come with the option of a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 or a V8.

The Audi A5 Sportback - the best of three worlds

Audi is presenting a new vehicle concept - the Audi A5 Sportback. The five-door model with the long, flowing rear end unites the best of various vehicle genres: the emotion and elegance of a coupe, the comfort of a sedan and the practicality of a station wagon. The Sportback joins the Coupé and Cabriolet as the third member of the A5 model family.

The A5 Sportback will be rolling into Audi dealerships in September featuring an emotion-packed design, high everyday practicality, a sporty character and engines that are as efficient as they are powerful. Sales have already begun, with prices starting at 33,650 euros. A further, specially-priced model to follow in 2010 will make the A5 Sportback the entry-level model in the A5 model series.

Audi, the inventor of the Avant, is setting new trends in design with the A5 Sportback. The five-door coupe is defined by elegant lines. It is 36 millimeters (1.42 in) lower than the A4 Sedan; with its short front overhang, long wheelbase, wide track and the four frameless doors with their slender window lines, it is the very picture of sporty elegance.

The interior is spacious, offering uncompromising comfort in all four seats. The large luggage compartment hatch is harmoniously integrated into the long, tapered tail end with the flat C pillars; the spoiler lip underscores the tension-filled character. The luggage compartment volume of 480 liters (16.95 cu ft) nearly matches that of the A4 Avant and increases to 980 liters (34.61 cu ft) with the rear seats folded down.

The A5 Sportback follows the consistent path of innovative technologies at Audi when it comes to the drivetrain. All of the engines are highly-efficient direct injection models - TDI for the cultivated diesels, FSI for the gasoline engines - and all comply with the Euro 5 emissions standard.

All models are equipped with a recuperation system that recovers energy during braking and deceleration and stores it temporarily in the battery.

Audi is initially offering three gasoline and three TDI engines, with three more engines to follow by mid-2010. The gasoline engines - the two-liter TFSI with 132 kW (180 hp) or 155 kW (211 hp) and the 3.2-liter V6 with 195 kW (265 hp) - are equipped with the Audi valvelift system for variable control of valvelift. The intelligent technology boosts performance while simultaneously reducing fuel consumption.

The 2.0 TDI produces 125 kW (170 hp) and consumes on average a frugal 5.2 liters of fuel per 100 km (45.23 US mpg). It is coupled with the start-stop system, which further enhances fuel efficiency in city traffic. The 140 kW (190 hp) 2.7-liter TDI offers even more power. The 3.0 TDI, which also features the S tronic, puts out an impressive 176 kW (240 hp).

Like the three gasoline engines, the top diesel engine delivers its power to the quattro permanent all-wheel drive system. The two most powerful engines are optionally available with the newly developed sport differential, which variably distributes power between the rear wheels and provides even greater dynamics, driving pleasure and safety. The two TDI models with front-wheel drive - the 2.0 TDI and 2.7 TDI - and the 2.0 TFSI (132 kW / 180 hp) benefit from another Audi innovation: The ESP stabilization program with electronic front differential lock increases agility and prevents understeer.

The perfect complement is the Audi drive select vehicle dynamics system, which enables the driver to freely vary the throttle response characteristic, the shifting points of the seven-speed S tronic, and the boost provided by the servotronic steering system, which comes standard (from power outputs of 140 kW (190 hp) upwards). The system is offered as a modular package with at least one of the following three options: sport differential, adaptive shock absorber control or dynamic steering with variable boost.

This is actually a fantastic design, as the A5 Sportback is built to be a variant of the A5 Coupé which is a member of the Mittelklasse A4/A5 family.

BMW differentiated the design of the 3er Limousinen and Coupé, and it should also be noticed that A4 and A5 have quite different designs as well, especially the surfaces of the side panels and different interpretations of the Tornado Line.

It is a correct decision that a family of products (based on the same platform) should be sharing a similar design trait in order to emphasize the technical similarities and the approximity of their market segments and price ranges: Mercedes-Benz even uses the E-Klasse design trait on both the E-Klasse Limousinen and the C-Klasse based E-Klasse Coupé.

It is ok. It is a clean design, unlike BMW's recent X1. But it is kind of boring as well. I still don't understand why this is here as we already have the A4. Audi built the A5 coupe based on the A4 and using mostof its A4 parts. Now they build another 4 door usign the Coupe. WTF? It's like BMW building a 4 door 3 Series Coupe.

Maybe they can charge customer more with this A5 body although it is basically an A4. Bear in mind that a normal non-Quattro version has been proven to hadle worse than the A4.

HAAAAAAAAAAA! Same again design, yawn yawn and yawn! Are they ever going to break from this theme? I cant wait til buyers start getting bored and sales plummet, that would teach them a lesson! Rubbish! And to think Audi use to be my favorite brand

true most people with money have no taste, thats why you see car brands like this continue to make the same looking thing over and over. continue to make what sells the most. thats what they're thinking.

Have you guys thought about it this way, maybe the people with money have taste. Its just different to the people who cant afford a BMW or Merc. BMW and Merc make cars that look different so thy stand out so that people can see them,so people who have money and are succesfull can show it off. And personally i think that Bmw's cars look great.

July 17, 2009 1:26 PM
A lot of people go on about how each model in the BMW lineup looks very different, however not too long ago (in the late 90's, early millenium) most of their models shared their design features with one another, which looked very good (it was probably the high point of their design). Look at the old 5 series, 7 series etc from that time. They were very similar in design, but very good. They are one of the reasons BMW are where they are today. Most Audi's share common design elements but they are all good. Its a shame BMW lost their way when Bangle came in and bungled it all up. I hope that the same doesn't happen to Audi. And besides people don't complain about Aston Martins etc looking the same do they?

July 20, 2009 6:21 PM
Sorry xenomorph, but you do realise that whatyou said is just your opnioin. In my opnion, many new BMWs are very good looking, in and out. And if you place the cars next to each other (rival to rival, BMW is definately the better looking one). Look at the 3 Series catagory, the 3 looks so much better than the A4, and the c Class probably beats the rest. A6 cat: 5 is the best looking. Do you think Audi's Q7 look better than the X5? or lets say the A3 couvert looks better than the 1 Series convert. Well, if you do, you are the minority.

As for the person up here who said that people who are rish and buy BMWs have no taste: I have bad news for you. BMW is the best selling premium car maker. So you are effectively saying that most people who are rich and educated have no taste.... maybe you should re-evaluate your own taste, maybe you still belong in the VW Group stable (incl Audi). All I can say is that deisng is a subjective matter. To me, this A5 is clean looking, yet can be very broing. The rear is a bit ugly, too. but not as ugly as the X1. As for most of the people in this market chosing BMW: maybe becasue BMW is original and distinctive, great quality with no parts sharing with lower grades - afterall this seems to be what the educated seem to value.

I want to not like this car, but I'll admit it looks good in red with the sport wheels. The silver is blah. It looks like more of a porker than the coupe AND it has the 2.0T instead of the V6. Somebody tell me why Audi needs this car in their lineup when the A4 is built on the same chassis as the A5 and the A6 already fills the mid/full sedan slot? BTW, I wonder if Audi will produce a S5 Sportback.

July 16, 2009 2:43 PM
What people fail to notice is that the A5 Sportback is not a 5er GT competitor. It might have a arched roofline but that's where the similarities end. The A5 has none of the utility of the 5er GT and is more a car than a "van". Look at the R-Class and see how BMW has trumped that in all departments. That is the only vehicle in the same sort of class.

I just don't understand the point of this car, what it offers more than an A4 or A5...The Sportback does look elegant though, nice way of doing the fastback design.

July 16, 2009 7:46 PM
i think that this is what the A4 should have been all along. the A4 is nice from some angles, but the rear is too long. this has much better proportions, and a sporting pretension which a lot of buyers go for.

July 16, 2009 2:56 PM
Just what is Audi paying their designers for? Its the same design as every other model even the bumpers are the same! The car looks boring because their designers don't have anything to do!

I would pick a Merc CLS or a Passat CC over this anytime!

I think the idea of making an A7 sportback is really stupid... Audi should present the A7 in a special way, like the Mercedes S or BMW 7. I cant imagine a mercedes S sportback... I also cant understand why Audi is anxious about willing to built a new car every year. They have to slow down because car fans have to be excited while waiting the release of a car.

Audi was the only company with a growth in sales during the crisis, i think they know what they are doing. the A7 is a good idea. with the release of the Panamera more people will want something similar but with a better price/better looks. it's the perfect timing for the A7.

look what happened with GM and keeping people waiting for a new car.

Geez..enough of this fighting, guys.

Btw, A5 Sportback does look sleek IMO. Thats normal for Audi having similar looking cars because they are afraid to use new design theme for each car. So they are sticking to one design theme. Still the results are effective.

I'm not sure but A5 Sportback is the only closest rival for BMW 5er GT.

A couple of questions if someone could just enlighten me please. Is this as big as an A6? If it is why would you need this if size was an issue. Is "sportback" just a posh term for hatchback? And why do they feel the need to create more models? A8,A7,A6,A5,A4,A1 then to add to that you have several models in between. I liked it better when A5 was just a coupe, this is cool but I don't think they NEEDED to make it.

Typically understated Audi beauty... those looking for flashy styling and some standard bling-bling must search elsewhere.

Now that´s not to say I´d buy it, I´d go for the A4 Avant over this one in the blink of an eye. Mores pace and practicality and same driving dynamics, but that´s just me wanting my station wagon to look like a station wagon. I don´t see the point in having all these weird body styles just because they look different, but it´s clear that the market is driving the manufacturers towards this. It seems if you build them the buyers will come!

I don't get the whole 5-door thing Audi and BMW seem so crazy about lately. A 5-door like this doesn't have the cargo capability of a traditional wagon (such as the ability to haul something taller than you could fit into a sedan's trunk), so it's just a car with a bigger trunklid but not a bigger trunk. Seems like anything you could carry in this you could carry in an A4 Sedan with folding rear seats.

It also has a flat-looking bench rear seat, which is practical for carrying 5 people but not very sporty. So what makes this model a fit for the A5 image more than the A4?

At least it's way prettier than the 5GT...but I'd still rather have a stylish, sporty and functional wagon like an A4 Avant.

because Audi built the A5 coupe based on the A4 and using mostof its A4 parts. Now they build another 4 door usign the Coupe. It's like BMW building a 4 door 3 Series Coupe.

If you are going to make a car like this, at least make it look different. Not only did this copy BMW's GT concept and X6, it also used the same design as the A5. This is premium class, customers expect exceptional quality and design. Cut and paste or using too much for the same car is dreadful. This is also the reason why an independent company like BMW can strive for creativity whereas a VW company like Audi design for the lost common denominator. Not only do they need to get creative ideas from BMW and Merc, they also need to beg VW to use thier Polo engines and brakes on the new Audi in order to generate more profit per unit - which they are leading at the moment. Why? becasue customers buy junk thinking it's premium.

thatis the point making a car which has the same theme is quite difficult so well done Audi It looks better and more proporsional than the regular A4 avant so hopefully it will sell well On the other hand, it is not %er Gt series' rival Audi does another way, they put A4 avant into something that is slimmer, but BMW makes a car which is absolutely bigger than 5er sedan, so it will be good for markets in Asia where somehow they though that buying 7er or A8 is too irrational for daily use in a crowded and unstructured road

that is my point because I live in another side of world, so I know how people though and what they want

It might look boring, because there is simply nothing wrong with the design. Maybe it could have bolder curves and flashier and bigger everything.. It is a 4 door coupé, just like MB CLS and Passat CC. Not a traditional hatchback. (It has just more functional boot lid) BMW GT has lots of things wrong in it's design, but maybe that's why it isn't boring at all.

it is NOT because there is nothing wrong... there's simply nothing worth to comment about the design... would u give comment and compare 2 pieces of white paper? the answer is no because they are the same shxt and boring... audi cars are just boring from the heart... look at A4 now and 10 years ago and compare with E-class now and 10 years ago... hardly anything different on A4.. .just the over-used front grill is different.. shopping in audi showroom is even boring than shopping in home depot.. however, they will do fine in the low-end market segment where consumers are more concerned on prices..

in some countries, they are using celebrities to do promotion and they even give away free cars to irrelevant celebrities (not like car racer or something)... they have been trying hard to look like mercedes and bmw but with volkswagen quality... i don't recall brands like MB, BMW, Ferrari, porsche etc would give out free cars to celebrites.. that's some cheap move making the cars look so unwanted..

Its amusing that so many people say that Audi's all look the same and are boring, yet this article has over twice the number of comments as any BMW article. Seems like a lot of BMW and Merc fans just feel threatened by Audi's success in recent years and have to take every opportunity to knock Audi down.
