Mercedes SLS AMG Gullwing images leaked

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Gullwing leaked images

The leaks are starting to flow.  Just within the past week we saw the latest spy photos of an SLS Gullwing in grey, more official "teaser" images were published, and today rumours of an SLS Gullwing electric vehicle is slated for 2015.  But the day isn't over yet and another very legitimate looking image revealing the front and rear design details has surfaced.

Here we have two very different versions of the same grainy image.  The first of which is clearly a magazine cover from Autobild with a bonus rear shot, and the second version from Autowerald.com in The Netherlands is the source image without the clutter.

WCF sources state the images are genuine.  Judging from the generic studio background and lack of computer touch-up work, they could be preview images for dealers or existing clientele.  Additionally, the type of low resolution picture quality, even visible on the magazine cover version, suggests the source images are from a printed brochure or magazine and then captured using a mobile phone camera.

Public unveiling in Frankfurt is only two months away.  Judging by all of the recent leaks and releases, an official media release could happen very soon.

That's the idea, it looks like the classic 300SL, with a modern edge- I'm glad because the old one is an object of lust the world over, even as we speak- and I'm glad to say it does not look like a R8...

it looks like it only took inspiration from concept art but it isnt as menacing as on those pics... it looks too retro to be really cool... the headlights are too far and too small ... it looks like a frog

And from GT-R too, wonder how much money Mercedes paid to Nissan to use the headlights.

scratchy996
July 11, 2009 2:47 AM
Nissan didn't invent those headlights.

Renegade
July 11, 2009 1:15 PM
So? They have copied the headlights, it's always sad when Merc is coping Nissan, but hey they are use to it, they stolen design ideas from Lexus when they've made the last gen E klasse.

After long delay, here's Mercedes' answer to BMW's Z8. Well, it's really not my style or the model I'd choose to buy if I were interested in purchasing a Benz, but I think the "older" crowd will love it (no offense). Personally, I'm not a fan of the gullwing doors because I feel it takes away from the overall appeal/design of the car (I love long beautifully arched a/b/c pilars), but I understand the homage it pays to the classic. Maybe when the official photo's reveal more detail/numbers I'll change my mind but I seriously doubt it.

Again the Bimmerphiles come out in force to hate on another marque. You guys should've been at the Hater's Ball on Chappelle's show, could've had your own section alongside Silky Johnson, Buc Nasty, Pit Bull, Beuatiful and the guy from Korea. How are you going to compare the Z8 to any MB supercar from the last ten years, go get your head examined.

Please shut the passenger's door!!!

It may be a tad retro, but it is beautifully penned with the elegant simplicity that MB seems to have recently lost (see SL facelift, "E" class coupe, etc.).

If you prefer a flat-nosed dustbuster front end, there are a lot of other cars from which to choose. This makes me hopeful that the next SL won't just be a wedge with swoosh lines going up the sides.

350z frontt headlights much...

dmanero
July 11, 2009 1:00 AM
don't like it, the front end is too much like the 300SL and too much of a drastic change from the old one. I'd still prefer the previous model over this one.

July 11, 2009 2:36 AM
Definitely not as aggressive as I hoped and thought it would be. The front looks drab and heavy and has no flair. It's not bad but ultimately for me it is a disappointment. Im sure it will be a top quality car but I would choose a second-hand Ferrari F430 or Lamborghini Gallardo over a new SLS.

scratchy996
July 11, 2009 2:47 AM
this isn't intended to go against the F430/F450 and Gallardo , this goes against Bentley GT, Aston Martin DB9, 911 turbo.

i think it's great that someone has finally made a real revival of an old car instead of just a modern interpretation.

Benz always chocks me, but not this time, maybe because this SLS class look a like the old 300SL class, but I don't care it is one of Benz STARS. The designers could have done something else with the positioning of the lighting spot (keep the front head lights as it is, only change the interior). Well, I can't wait to see and touch this Super.

I wonder what some of you are on? The majority of you seem to be soley vested in GT-R's and 911's. There's much more to the auto world than that. So judgemental, as if you could produce something better.. And what makes you think that every automobile released by a make is so incredibly intented to compete directly with another auto? This is Mercedes-Benz, they mostly focus on producing autombiles as they see fit ...This model is even more so in that vain. It's in its own spectrum, and not to mention it's a proper revival of a model decades older and more special than some of what you guys go gaga over. It's not supposed to be overtly aggresive, it's supposed to be beautiful, and it is. Ugly?..Seriously? I'm sure it looks a heck of alot better than what you drive in finer opinion. When you see it on the streets, you will eat those words.

This "thing" is GORGEOUS! I want a black version too. And for the record I'm not old, and I can asure you that many young people will purchase this car just as an older crowd will.

July 11, 2009 6:44 AM
Mainly retro Mercedes design, some modern copies (350z headlights) problem is the front hood is too large and the rear/cockpit too small. A classic phallic symbol that today deters buyers, with good reason.

Respect to designers, they could show the old Gullwing in a modern way. Excellent. It is the second Mercedes which i liked. The first is ClS.

McNamara68
July 11, 2009 8:01 AM
This is thoroughly disappointing if it is the real thing. The mule looked much better. This car simply does not take your breath away the way the original Gullwing does--then again, I'm not sure anything ever will. But the headlight design, and the overall sedation of this design is a major let down. I hope the real thing is a lot better than this, come on Merc!

July 11, 2009 9:31 AM
mmmmm so far, I'm a bit dissapointed... I was expecting the car to be much more impressive, but it's not. The only 300SL touches I see in this are the doors, the grille and some proportions, what about the headlights? and what's with those air intakes under them? the most dissapointing feature is that Mercedes keeps using the same wheels over and over again, couldn't they just design a set for this car? something retro maybe?

I agree with HommeStar, dose any body know how the designs teem of Mercedes-Benz work? Especially with this class? They've faced a real challenge because of bringing this beauty back alive, by keeping on the identity of the revolutionary 300SL, they've done a great job here! I will buy one in metallic smoked black with black and red interior, I'll park her in my bed room beside my bed, ooh I'm fantasizing. Come on give them and her a brake, wait till you see her on street while she takes your breath away.

It looks great! Of course this isnt the money shot that will be seen in magazines and brochures, but it looks classy. Not like a plastic-techno car like the R8, which in my opinion is seriously ugly. The rear of this one, reminds me a lot of the one seen on the SLR prototype from 1998

Ugly or not, if you look at the old photo of the red one, with the guy in their studio, when they show the interior of a camouflaged one, you will notice, its not the same door mechanism, not in setup, OR shape, and neither are the door moldings, and neither is what little can be seen from the interior positioning here, OR the mags for that matter, they have more than 5 spokes, split in 2's (or i could be wrong, it could be 3's)- don' take my word for it- study it closely yourself- this is a FAKE!

I really really hope this is a fake, those headlights are ugly as hell!! I was definitely expecting them to be round, retro, or anything but GTR-looking... IMO most of the artist renderings I've seen look much better than this, and they're all only slightly different from the "finished" car. A few examples:

McNamara68
July 13, 2009 10:36 AM
THIS IS A FAKE and here's why: this rendering's wheel wells are not flared like the originals or the car seen in the spy photos. This is a very distinctive design element that will no doubt be borrowed from the original car. If you don't know what I'm talking about, check out a pic of the original 300SL Gullwing and take a look at the flares above the wheel wells. Then look at the spy photos and you'll see the same thing. These renderings are both missing this critical element and thus, are almost 100% likely to be fakes.
