2011 BMW 5 Series sedan spied with less disguise - showing its shape

2011 BMW 5-Series sedan first time spied with psychedelic camouflage / SB-Medien

Next-generation F10 5-Series expected in 2010

So far, we've seem to have faired better in snatching some spy shots of the next-generation 5-series wagon rather than those of the sedan model. But here's a few shots of the upcoming new 5-series standard sedan, expected to roll into town sometime in 2010.

Now, what do these pics tell us? Not much, because the camouflage is still pretty distracting and quite effective at disguising any changes to the design. Of course, those changes will be subtle, anyway. But shape-wise, the new 5-series seems to be a little more tightly carved. Looking trim, sportier and more like a 3-series than the 7-series it is often compared to. Although, we have had previous spy shots of the 5-series tourer revealing some design cues from its senior sibling, such as with the tail lights.

The 5-series will be expected to come with a wide range of engines currently in the BMW stable. Those include both the 3.0 liter inline 6 cylinder and the 4.4 liter V8 twin-turbo engines. On the lower end of the scale, there will also be 2.0 liter petrol and diesel engines packing enough punch to properly power this mid-range premium model.

The one snapshot of the interior also, unfortunately, doesn't reveal much. But with German brands, the progression of models is always more evolutionary than revolutionary. Expect more of a nodding-of-your-head-in-satisfactory-approval response rather than an elated-popping-of-the-eyes one.

Looking forwart to BMWs approach to the next 5-series... The 5-series is an important car for BMW... All with a 1 and 3-series loves the current looks because it's the current über beemer (The 7-series is pretty distant here in Denmark with our 180% car tax...!)

Hope they keep the track of the new 5 GT design, but without the ugly wagon-but-stil-kind-of-sedan-look....

I owned years ago a E34 5-Series which I admit it sill looks beautiful to my eyes. At least I like the new headlamp of 5-Series GT or new 7-Series and the look of taillight of the new BMW generation remind me a lot of ones similar on E34. I would get one.

3.0 litre V6? Is it not BMW's signature inline 6 cylinder engine?

WCF ALWAYS do that with bmw stories... i suspect its just another typo. but correct me if im wrong here!

"Those include both the 3.0 liter V6 and the 4.4 liter V8 twin-turbo engines."

effington, thats a typo, that should be inline-6 not V6.

I think the new 5-series GT should give us a hint on which engines will make their way into the new 5-series sedan.

Bangle ugly? Hes designs werent ugly, they were contriversial - and i think that they looked good. Especially better than the bland stuff BMW are coming up with now

These design cues look pretty good on the 7, but you're right this is boring as hell. They should sell this car with the psychedelic cammo to make it more interesting. As much as I grew to like Bangle's designs.. I think he made a great exit. I hope he starts his own electric car company or something. The guy is a true visionary. He brought mass appeal to such controversial designs. I think that pretty much means his work was dam good.

The front lights look good but the rear lights look horrible like the 7 series. All I can say is, its wasted!!

Its like almost 50% of the rear lights are covered by psychedelic camo, its really hard to comment on the shape when we can't see the actual shape of the lights.

It could look like the one on the 5-series GT, X1 or updated 3-series...

This model has me excited! Gone are the strange, strained headlamps and the weird boot cut-lines of the previous model. The F10 looks like it will have great road presence and style without distractions. I have also seen interior spy shots where the F10 boasts a manual transmission and a beautiful, purposeful dash and instrument cluster.

This car could dispell the evil rumor (which I admittedly help spread) that BMW has lost focus on core (sport sedan) products. Get this one right and all will be forgiven.

I know its wierd, but somehow i feel like this is the next generation 3-series and not the 5.It just fits better to my eye being that way..The overall size, front and back lights shape..everything...just the interior its cleary 5.

This isn't a 5 series, it's too small, it's 3 series

July 10, 2009 7:55 PM
Yeah i agree i think its an update to the 3 series to the new styling cues found on the 7 series. Toooo small for a 5 series.

It does look like a 3 series... at least the black cars do

looks very 3 series like. I think ill like it.

ha, in like the 9th pic the new 5 series perfectly blocks out the 7 series headlight behind it.

The area below the doors (do they still call it a runningboard?") is very plain - almost Amish. It would make sense that aftermarket tuners and BMW's own M-Sport people will come up with several different components to offer something with a bit more movement and eye-appeal. At least the surface looks clean - and no "sow-belly."

bangle reminds me of ross lovegrove, they love to talk for hours and hours about their work which end up looking horrendous, bad, weird and good....not brilliant or a master piece which they play it out to be.

more wind than essence.

I disagree. Bangle has his own aesthetics, an individualized design structure and we can disapprove it. Ross Lovegrove is a "bricoleur", he is playing with known elements from industrialized aesthetic structures and he is designer in printed or visualized reality not in design world.

The 5 and the 7 share a same platform now (a slight variation actually) and "obviously" share many of the same components. The interior and exterior will look very similar, sharing many of the same design cues and interior components. That black car does look a little 3-series-esque. However, I doubt BMW will be updating the 3 series again anytime soon. If that is a 3-series, it's a brand new one. (thinking about a brand new 3-series makes me giddy like a little school girl!)

It's a 5-series as the 3-series has been launched in 2006. So 2006 + 7 years (lasting of each model) = 2013 therefore 2011 is the launch of the new 5-series as the E60 has been launched in 2004.

The design is superb, conservative a bit which is better, and elegant lines. Typical BMW design! I just HOPE the new 5-series' rear lights are not like the X1 or face-lift 3-series.

I'm just loving BMW interiors is dash design, smooth, clean, simple design. classy and consistent wiht every model. I am a benz fan and driver but they are getting it so wrong with their interiors these days. The new e is all glitz and hooded instruments, column shift for one model, floor shift for others what happenned to the days you would hop into a benz and EVERYTHING would be in the same place. Sure the centre stack is consistent model to model, but everything else seems over done and all over the place. And there are several differen ways to operate the same function. The radio and air can be done via the controller, direct on the equipment or via steering wheel! YOu never know which to use!

benz_man

ap, The E-coupe gets a floor mounted shifter because its a C-class. Mercedes marketing will hype it up as "sporting pretensions", but any true BMW lover knows that's purely not the case. I too can remember back to the days when all Benz' shared (the right) component placement. Ahh what times, what times. Hmmm, I would assume you (being a benz aficionado) would actually appreciate the new interior design philosophy. Simply put, they're forgetting everything that ever came from Mr. Schrempp's mouth and picking up where the W124 left off. Thats the best idea they've had since 1995. And, whats wrong with having more than one way to skin the cat? It lets the driver choose the most efficient method depending on situation.

Entire bodywork, silhouette particularly, shows an old school beemer. What a taste match with hopelessness?! Hopefully (sic!) they do not ruin the interior.

I hope it doesn't turn out to be as boring-looking as the new 7 series. The tail lights on the 7... ugh. Why couldn't they be more symmetrical instead of looking like bug eyes?
