2010 Jaguar XJ Officially Revealed

Press Release

THE CONCEPT

"Any good car design - indeed the design of anything of value - should tell a story. The new XJ does that, with a visual hierarchy and clarity of intent. We took inspiration from classic Jaguars like the Mk2 and original XJ and created a Jaguar for the 21st century with pure, sensual forms."
Ian Callum, Design Director, Jaguar Cars

The all-new XJ's distinctive lines mark the next bold evolution of Jaguar's new design language. The striking elongated teardrop shape of the side window graphic establishes the car's streamlined profile, and is balanced by a dramatic lower swage line emanating from the front wheels that reinforces the vehicle's forward stance. The new XJ's sleek lines are complemented by a taut waistline, which further accentuates the impression of length and elegance and creates a natural tension as it fades from the front arch into the middle section of the car before reappearing as a strong haunch towards the rear.

Bold, confident face

The face of the XJ is confident, with a wide front track and short overhangs contributing to the finely judged proportions. The nose of the car follows Jaguar's new design language, with a bold and assertive treatment: the powerful mesh grille and slim xenon headlamps creating a strong road presence.

The strong, muscular lower half of the car is contrasted with the slim and graceful quality of the roofline, which takes inspiration from the original 1968 XJ saloon. The wrap-around rear screen reduces the visual weight of the pillars, and gives the impression of an exotic ‘floating' roof.

And the new XJ doesn't just look sleek and streamlined: it is, alongside the XF, the most aerodynamic Jaguar ever. The car has a drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.29, and, equally importantly, outstanding high-speed stability.

A key factor in achieving this highly efficient aerodynamic performance was the extensive use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to refine the shape long before the car ever saw a wind tunnel. Taking the process pioneered on the XF programme to a new level of sophistication, more than 400 detailed CFD studies were performed during the initial design phase.

Every area of the new XJ - from the outer skin to the composite undertray to the fine grille meshes of the cooling system - was optimised using this process. Key areas included the profile of the rear decklid, which was engineered to ensure that the airflow was controlled without the need for a spoiler. As well as reduced drag and impressively low wind noise, the overall shape achieves aerodynamic loads that are carefully balanced between front and rear axles to ensure optimum handling balance and high-speed stability.

Dramatic LED lights

The rear end is notable for its pure, sculpted shape, with a conscious absence of unnecessary ornamentation. The sheet metal of the rear panel retains its pure form, with a single leaping Jaguar motif making a strong, confident statement. The LED light clusters wrap stylishly over the rear wings, and feature three dramatic red, vertical strips.

Architectural interior design

The overriding impression from the interior is a sense of personal space, a feeling enhanced by the clean, simple form of the leather-wrapped instrument panel sitting low across the vehicle. At the sides of the cabin, a bold architectural wood veneer sweeps forward from the doors to meet at the front of the car, emphasising the new XJ's powerful, dynamic character. This linear, modern use of wood helps to create a truly welcoming environment.

The panoramic glass roof has been from the outset an integral part of the design concept of the all-new XJ. It enables a lower, more streamlined roofline, and also dramatically enhances the feeling of light and space within the car. The roof's opening mechanism slides the glass upwards and outwards, so that headroom is never compromised. A dark tint and reflective coating prevent the interior from overheating under strong sunlight, while twin electric blinds provide another level of privacy and sun screening.

Yeah, I think the back will take some time to get used to too. But on the other hand, I think its quite a leap forward and it will attract more costumers than the last XJ. Really like the interior even though the wood-trimming is kinda weird. Overall I think its well done, grat's to Jaguar for making such a brave move. (finally)

Oh Jaguar, what have you done? I was a big fan of the old XJ. It was cool looking, different from the rest of the pack and imposing. This new one though, I'm not so sure. It looks alot like an XF upfront, and from the sides, which I suppose isn't a bad thing, but the rear is hugely out of proportion. That overhang is too big. It was too big on the old XJ too, but the rear on that car was narrow and had a low profile, but this new one is way too fat. It just looks out of place.

It is not a Jaguar.

The rear end is awful and the front is kind of ungainly. Small lights, huge grille. But the interior looks very good. It lacks the flair and the luxury looks of the 7-series or S-class interiors but it tries to be something different and it succeeds. What the hell is the deal with the C-pillars?

Model by model Jag will lose it's aura and this brand we all love will never be the same again.

The interior is nice, much better than the current model. BUT too many damn baby blue lights everywhere, even the vents are lit, like cmon do u really need the vents lit? I have never had a car with lit vents, and i never lost the vent holes, easy to find the hole where air is blowing at you from. Overkill imo.

Overall the interior does look nice. The steering wheel looks like the one that can be found in some Audi models.

the rear is terrible, other than tht I think it looks alright, the headlights kinda look like the maserati quattroporte(SP?)but at least this looks more like a Jaguar than the XF, espically the interior, it looks amazing.

@Fer I love the rear, it makes it look very distinct, I could only mistake it for a Bentley. This is a beautiful Automobile. If that rear pillar was body color I think it would make it look very ho-hum. I applaud Jaguar for breaking tradition and trying something new.

Nice body (referring to Elle) at that age with those legs, amazing!. Anyways, the rear looks more terrible than bmw 5 series GT.

no thanks, instead of this i would get the BMW 7series or Merc S-Class or Porsche Pan or AudiA8 even the Lexus LS is on a different level then this. But really, there are lots of nice things in the car, like the interior and maybe the front. But the rear just ruins the car, the same problem with the new E-class. Is it that hard to design a rear of a car?!

I'd like to know how nice this was before Tata started mixing their s***** suppliers in. The same suppliers are doing the new Range Rovers and they are awful too. I'm very displeased.

It takes about 2.5 years to design and get a car approved. Tata only took over in 2008 and therefore had nothing to do with the design of the new XJ.

I wasn't speaking "design". I'm talking component suppliers. If you pay close attention, you'll notice switchgear shared with the updated Range Rovers. I'm very aware of pre-production life-cycles, that's why I wonder what it was "supposed" to be like. You know, back when Ford had control.

Benz man- No sense taking a poke at Tata. This vehicle was ready to roll 18 months ago. Change is good for Jaguar. People that like the styling of the "old XJ" don't necessarily buy it. This car will be a home run for Jaguar.

Originally, Tata made an arrangement with Ford Motor Company to continue using "current" suppliers for Jag and LR models for about 12 months in exchange for payments back to Ford. Like any wise company, Tata has quickly changed suppliers for the updated LR's and the quality hit is obviously apparent to anyone who studies this. Big, hard, high gloss plastic buttons with questionable ergonomic placement and poor haptic feedback. Same for the new LR's "digital instruments" (which the XJ shares). I'm sure Tata had to make a few last minute changes in supplier bases to bring this XJ more in line with its LR fleet. These are obviously not materials that would have been chosen for the Premier Auto Group (remember that?), just look at the quality of new Lincolns. More than likely, those materials families would have been used here. I'm not hating on Tata: wise business decision, poor automotive decision.

I see what Jaguar are trying to do: Give it a Merc CLS like coupe profile. Looking at photo #5260543, (right mouse click, save as...) it doesn't look too bad. Have to really see it in the metal. But think I am beginning to like it...

Hmm i thought that the XJ was supposed to be an executive car not the new Honda Civic to be bought by little kids that are intrigued by baby blue LED lights everywhere...Like come on are they serious? Did EVERYTHING really need to be LED lit in that horrible colour? Do you see the Merc S class, 7 series, A8, Panarama, Aston Rapide, Quattroporte have those gay lights everywhere, no and that is for a damn good reason, nobody that would buy a car like this wants the interior to be so childish, save that for the Mustang and Focus.

I agree with your comments about the LEDs, it is ridiculous. Also too the chrome handles etc that will invariably be plastic with chrome paint are tacky... I guess they need to target "gangstas" too. What is amusing if I am seeing things right, Jaguar seem to be defeating themselves with all this bling by having normal rubber brake / accelerator pedals.

Nice to see something different from the boxy germans, its better looking than an E-Class or A6 thats for sure. And critism of LED plights, please!, look carefully within an Audi or Lexus and you'll find VW and Toyota parts.
