2010 Jaguar XJ Officially Revealed
Press Release
ALL-NEW JAGUAR XJ - THE SUMMARY
- The all-new Jaguar XJ brings a daring new spirit to automotive luxury. Sleek, sporting and sophisticated, it offers a seductive mix of striking design, breathtaking performance and engineering without compromise.
- Building on the success of the new XK and XF models, the introduction of the all-new XJ is a landmark for the revitalised Jaguar brand. Clearly positioned as the company's four-door flagship, it extends the appeal of the XJ to a new generation of customers.
- Jaguars are renowned for their elegant, sporting lines and the all-new XJ, with its fluid, contemporary style, is the boldest interpretation yet of Design Director Ian Callum's vision for Jaguar in the 21st century.
- A panoramic glass roof is an integral part of the all-new XJ's design concept, enabling the car to have a lower, more streamlined roofline, while dramatically enhancing the feeling of light and space inside.
- Standard- and long-wheelbase models are available from launch. The long-wheelbase offers an even more sumptuous and refined environment for rear-seat passengers with an additional 125mm of legroom. The XJ's 520-litre boot can swallow two large suitcases side-by-side.
- The all-new XJ cabin blends elegant, contemporary design with the comfort, luxury and unmistakable sporting style of a Jaguar. Chrome and piano black detailing provide an eye-catching contrast to the beautifully-crafted leather and veneer surfaces.
- The all-new XJ's beauty is much more than skin-deep: it is constructed using Jaguar's aerospace-inspired aluminium body technology, which makes the XJ lighter than its rivals by at least 150kg. These technologies - now developed into an even more impressive new generation for the XJ - significantly improve performance, handling and economy, while delivering increased strength, refinement and safety.
- Proven Jaguar dynamic technologies are taken to new levels in the all-new XJ. Features such as air suspension, Adaptive Dynamics (continuously variable damping), Active Differential Control and quick-ratio power steering deliver the blend of responsive, dynamic handling and refined, supple ride expected from a Jaguar.
- The XJ benefits from the most advanced, powerful and efficient Jaguar powertrains ever. Customers will have - dependent on market - a choice of four engines, all coupled to a shift-by-wire, six-speed automatic transmission controlled by the JaguarDrive SelectorTM or steering wheel-mounted paddles:
- 3.0-litre 275PS AJ-V6D Gen III diesel with twin sequential turbochargers - 0-60mph in 6.0 secs (0-100kph in 6.4 secs).
- 5.0-litre 385PS AJ-V8 Gen III naturally aspirated direct-injection V8 petrol - 0-60mph in 5.4 secs (0-100kph in 5.7 secs)
- 5.0-litre 470PS AJ-V8 Gen III supercharged V8 direct-injection petrol - 0-60mph in 4.9 secs (0-100kph in 5.2 secs)
- 5.0-litre 510PS AJ-V8 Gen III supercharged V8 direct-injection petrol - 0-60mph in 4.7 secs (0-100kph in 4.9 secs)
Advanced new technologies have allowed Jaguar's interior designers to create an environment more akin to a state-of-the-art living space than a simple car cabin. Stunning, 12.3-inch high-definition Virtual Instruments complement an innovative, Dual-View technology 8-inch Touch-screen that can project DVD movies or television programmes to the passenger while the driver views vehicle functions or follows satellite navigation.- Premium surround sound options include the top-of-the-range 1200W Bowers & Wilkins system, which is comparable in audio quality to the best in-home entertainment. Advanced infotainment features also include hard drive-based audio and navigation systems, and comprehensive connectivity for portable audio and video devices via the powerful Media Hub.
- The Jaguar brand has been acknowledged this year by J.D. Power and Associates with a joint first ranking in the Vehicle Dependability study 2009. Jaguar's obsessive attention to detail has continued in the development of the all-new XJ by using the latest ‘virtual' technologies, which included 40,000 quality-specific assessments during the development stage.
- The all-new XJ takes a new approach to sustainable motoring. The lightweight aluminium structure - with 50 percent recycled material - underpinned by a lifecycle approach to vehicle design and manufacture, enables the new XJ to minimise its carbon footprint. This alone creates a potential saving of three tonnes of CO2 per vehicle, compared to a bodyshell made from new aluminium.
- To complement the all-new cabin design is a level of choice in colours, veneers and leathers not seen before in a Jaguar. The three specification levels - Luxury, Premium Luxury and Portfolio offered with the AJ-V6D and AJ-V8 engines - allow the customer to tailor the car to suit their tastes. The range is completed with the 470PS Supercharged model and the ultimate expression of performance and luxury in the 510PS Supersport model, which includes a leather roof-lining, semi-aniline leather seats and veneers with laser inlays.
- The all-new XJ offers extremely attractive cost of ownership with impressive fuel economy across the range (3.0-litre AJ-V6D turbodiesel returns 40.1mpg and 184g/km CO2), high predicted residual values and 15,000-mile service intervals. Depending on model and market, the all-new XJ can be ordered now. Delivery of first customer cars will begin in early 2010. Pricing will be announced by individual markets.

Yeah, I think the back will take some time to get used to too. But on the other hand, I think its quite a leap forward and it will attract more costumers than the last XJ. Really like the interior even though the wood-trimming is kinda weird. Overall I think its well done, grat's to Jaguar for making such a brave move. (finally)

Oh Jaguar, what have you done? I was a big fan of the old XJ. It was cool looking, different from the rest of the pack and imposing. This new one though, I'm not so sure. It looks alot like an XF upfront, and from the sides, which I suppose isn't a bad thing, but the rear is hugely out of proportion. That overhang is too big. It was too big on the old XJ too, but the rear on that car was narrow and had a low profile, but this new one is way too fat. It just looks out of place.

The rear end is awful and the front is kind of ungainly. Small lights, huge grille. But the interior looks very good. It lacks the flair and the luxury looks of the 7-series or S-class interiors but it tries to be something different and it succeeds. What the hell is the deal with the C-pillars?

Model by model Jag will lose it's aura and this brand we all love will never be the same again.

The interior is nice, much better than the current model. BUT too many damn baby blue lights everywhere, even the vents are lit, like cmon do u really need the vents lit? I have never had a car with lit vents, and i never lost the vent holes, easy to find the hole where air is blowing at you from. Overkill imo.

Overall the interior does look nice. The steering wheel looks like the one that can be found in some Audi models.
July 10, 2009 12:06 pm
Yeah I think it works well with the shape of the car. Superb looking car.

i would not mind it if it wernt for those blacked out c pillars... the make the whole thing look very strange! i think id buy one after the model mid life facelift in about 3 years time!

the rear is terrible, other than tht I think it looks alright, the headlights kinda look like the maserati quattroporte(SP?)but at least this looks more like a Jaguar than the XF, espically the interior, it looks amazing.
July 9, 2009 9:07 pm
@Fer I love the rear, it makes it look very distinct, I could only mistake it for a Bentley. This is a beautiful Automobile. If that rear pillar was body color I think it would make it look very ho-hum. I applaud Jaguar for breaking tradition and trying something new.
July 9, 2009 9:26 pm
Nice body (referring to Elle) at that age with those legs, amazing!. Anyways, the rear looks more terrible than bmw 5 series GT.
July 9, 2009 9:38 pm
no thanks, instead of this i would get the BMW 7series or Merc S-Class or Porsche Pan or AudiA8 even the Lexus LS is on a different level then this. But really, there are lots of nice things in the car, like the interior and maybe the front. But the rear just ruins the car, the same problem with the new E-class. Is it that hard to design a rear of a car?!

I'd like to know how nice this was before Tata started mixing their s***** suppliers in. The same suppliers are doing the new Range Rovers and they are awful too. I'm very displeased.
July 9, 2009 9:52 pm
It takes about 2.5 years to design and get a car approved. Tata only took over in 2008 and therefore had nothing to do with the design of the new XJ.
July 9, 2009 10:30 pm
I wasn't speaking "design". I'm talking component suppliers. If you pay close attention, you'll notice switchgear shared with the updated Range Rovers. I'm very aware of pre-production life-cycles, that's why I wonder what it was "supposed" to be like. You know, back when Ford had control.
July 9, 2009 11:23 pm
Benz man- No sense taking a poke at Tata. This vehicle was ready to roll 18 months ago. Change is good for Jaguar. People that like the styling of the "old XJ" don't necessarily buy it. This car will be a home run for Jaguar.

Originally, Tata made an arrangement with Ford Motor Company to continue using "current" suppliers for Jag and LR models for about 12 months in exchange for payments back to Ford. Like any wise company, Tata has quickly changed suppliers for the updated LR's and the quality hit is obviously apparent to anyone who studies this. Big, hard, high gloss plastic buttons with questionable ergonomic placement and poor haptic feedback. Same for the new LR's "digital instruments" (which the XJ shares). I'm sure Tata had to make a few last minute changes in supplier bases to bring this XJ more in line with its LR fleet. These are obviously not materials that would have been chosen for the Premier Auto Group (remember that?), just look at the quality of new Lincolns. More than likely, those materials families would have been used here. I'm not hating on Tata: wise business decision, poor automotive decision.

I see what Jaguar are trying to do: Give it a Merc CLS like coupe profile. Looking at photo #5260543, (right mouse click, save as...) it doesn't look too bad.
Have to really see it in the metal. But think I am beginning to like it...
July 9, 2009 10:48 pm
Hmm i thought that the XJ was supposed to be an executive car not the new Honda Civic to be bought by little kids that are intrigued by baby blue LED lights everywhere...Like come on are they serious? Did EVERYTHING really need to be LED lit in that horrible colour? Do you see the Merc S class, 7 series, A8, Panarama, Aston Rapide, Quattroporte have those gay lights everywhere, no and that is for a damn good reason, nobody that would buy a car like this wants the interior to be so childish, save that for the Mustang and Focus.
July 9, 2009 11:49 pm
I agree with your comments about the LEDs, it is ridiculous. Also too the chrome handles etc that will invariably be plastic with chrome paint are tacky... I guess they need to target "gangstas" too. What is amusing if I am seeing things right, Jaguar seem to be defeating themselves with all this bling by having normal rubber brake / accelerator pedals.
July 10, 2009 7:16 am
Totally agreed, and it´s a shame ´cause looks good in the front, but the rear doesn´t match with the rest...
July 10, 2009 12:30 am
Nice to see something different from the boxy germans, its better looking than an E-Class or A6 thats for sure. And critism of LED plights, please!, look carefully within an Audi or Lexus and you'll find VW and Toyota parts.
