2010 Jaguar XJ Officially Revealed

As promised the all-new Jaguar XJ has been unveiled during an exclusive event at the Saatchi Gallery in London this evening. Jaguar Cars Managing Director Mike O'Driscoll was the key speaker at the event while talk show host and car nut Jay Leno was the host. The list of VIP guests included celebrities, business leaders and other public figures.

Jaguar anticipates that the super luxury British sedan will infuse a daring new spirit in its segment, thanks to a bold new design direction, good performance and a high standard of engineering excellence.

"The new XJ is a thoroughly modern interpretation of the quintessential Jaguar," said Ian Callum, Design Director and the man who penned the XF as well. "Its visual impact stems from the elongated teardrop shape of the car's side windows, that powerful stance and its wide track. It is the most emphatic statement yet of Jaguar's new design direction."

A standout exterior feature is the panoramic glass roof that not only creates extra interior light but also gives the XJ a lower roofline. Jaguar says it will offer both the standard car and the long-wheel-base version right from the get go. The latter is 125mm longer but both versions have a boot as big as 520 litres in volume.

Aerospace-inspired aluminium body architecture was used in constructing the XJ, making it lighter (by at least 150kg) than its competitors. That of course improves performance and fuel consumption. The aluminium solution will allow Jaguar to better its carbon footprint because it has 50 percent recyclable material and is potentially able to save up to three tonnes of C02 gases per car.

Some driving comfort technologies utilised include the Adaptive Dynamics - which is continuously variable damping - an air suspension system, and active differential control.

The interior space features chrome and piano black detailing, leather and veneer surfaces, and other niceties depending on whether customers choose the Luxury, Premium Luxury, Portfolio, Supercharged or the range-topping Supersport models.

The gadgets and comfort creatures list has things like an 8-inch touch screen for playing DVD movies, a 1200W Bowers & Wilkins sound system and the Media Hub.

The Gen III petrol and turbo diesel engines make their way into the XJ. These are the 3.0-litre V6 diesel which has a base price of £52,500, the 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8 with 385hp (283kW), the 5.0-litre V8 supercharged making 510hp (375kW) and a new 470hp (346kW) version of the supercharged V8. Jaguar's official combined economy figure for the diesel is 40.1 mpg and its C02 emissions figure is 184g/km. The rear wheels are driven through a 6-speed ZF automatic gearbox.

Orders have been opened for the XJ and deliveries will begin in early 2010.

GLOBAL REVEAL OF THE ALL-NEW JAGUAR XJ

Jaguar Cars tonight officially unveiled the all-new XJ car at the Saatchi Gallery in Chelsea, London.

Hosted by Jay Leno, one of the world's best-known chat show hosts and a renowned car enthusiast, the launch of the new Jaguar flagship was attended by an invited audience that included public figures, business leaders, celebrities and media.

Jaguar Cars Managing Director, Mike O'Driscoll, commented: "These are truly exciting times for us at Jaguar. The new XJ is truly beautiful, exhilarating to drive, and with its bold, enlightened approach to design, it meets the challenges of our fast-changing world. It re-imagines the ultimate sporting luxury car."

The all-new XJ is available to order now (dependent on market), with the first customers due to receive their cars in early 2010. Prices start at £52,500 for the standard wheelbase 3.0-litre V6 diesel luxury.

Sleek, sporting and sophisticated, the all-new Jaguar XJ brings a daring new spirit to automotive luxury - it offers a seductive mix of striking design, breathtaking performance and engineering without compromise.

Building on the success of the new XK and XF models, the introduction of the all-new XJ is a landmark for the revitalised Jaguar brand. Clearly positioned as the company's four-door flagship, it extends the appeal of the XJ to a new generation of customers.

"The new XJ is a thoroughly modern interpretation of the quintessential Jaguar. Its visual impact stems from the elongated teardrop shape of the car's side windows, that powerful stance and its wide track. It is the most emphatic statement yet of Jaguar's new design direction", said Ian Callum, Design Director, Jaguar Cars.

An innovative new panoramic glass roof is an integral part of the all-new XJ's design concept, enabling the car to have a lower, more streamlined roofline, while dramatically enhancing the feeling of light and space inside.

Standard- and long-wheelbase models are available from launch. The long-wheelbase offers an even more sumptuous and refined environment for rear-seat passengers with an additional 125mm of legroom. Whichever the wheelbase, the XJ's 520-litre boot can swallow two large suitcases side-by-side.

The all-new XJ's cabin is a marvel in its own right, blending elegant, contemporary design with the comfort, luxury and unmistakable sporting style of a Jaguar. Chrome and piano black detailing provide an eye-catching contrast to the beautifully-crafted leather and veneer surfaces.

To complement the all-new cabin design is a level of choice in colours, veneers and leathers not seen before in a Jaguar. Three specification levels - Luxury, Premium Luxury and Portfolio - allow the customer to tailor the car to suit their tastes. Beyond this are the Supercharged and the top-of-the-range Supersport, the latter providing the ultimate expression of performance and luxury, with a specification that includes a leather roof-lining, semi-aniline leather seats and veneers with laser inlays.

All of Jaguar's acclaimed new ultra-efficient Gen III petrol and diesel engines will be available in the XJ. The 3.0-litre V6 diesel, 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8 and 5.0-litre supercharged V8 have already proved their breadth of ability, and they are joined by a 470 horsepower version of the supercharged engine. Fuel economy and emissions are also outstanding, with the diesel-powered XJ returning combined economy figures of 40.1mpg and CO2 emissions of 184g/km.

Proven Jaguar dynamic technologies are taken to new levels in the all-new XJ. Features such as air suspension, Adaptive Dynamics (continuously variable damping), Active Differential Control and quick-ratio power steering deliver the blend of responsive, dynamic handling and refined, supple ride expected from a Jaguar.

Inside the car, advanced new technologies have allowed Jaguar's designers to create an environment more akin to a state-of-the-art living space than a simple car cabin. Stunning, 12.3-inch high-definition Virtual Instruments complement an innovative, Dual-View technology 8-inch Touch-screen that can project DVD movies or television programmes to the passenger while the driver views vehicle functions or follows satellite navigation.

Premium surround sound options include the top-of-the-range 1200W Bowers & Wilkins system, which is comparable in audio quality to the best in-home entertainment. Advanced infotainment features also include hard drive-based audio and navigation systems, and comprehensive connectivity for portable audio and video devices via the powerful Media Hub.

The all-new XJ also takes a new approach to sustainable motoring. Constructed using Jaguar's aerospace-inspired aluminium body technology, the XJ is lighter than its rivals by at least 150kg which significantly improves performance, handling and economy, while delivering increased strength, refinement and safety.

The lightweight aluminium structure - with 50 percent recycled material - underpinned by a lifecycle approach to vehicle design and manufacture, enables the new XJ to minimise its carbon footprint. This alone creates a potential saving of three tonnes of CO2 per vehicle, compared to a bodyshell made from new aluminium.

The all-new XJ offers extremely attractive cost of ownership with impressive fuel economy and emissions performance across the range; high predicted residual values and 15,000-mile service intervals. These benefits are just some of the results of Jaguar's obsessive attention to detail during product development. Processes such as the use of the latest ‘virtual' technologies to implement 40,000 quality-specific assessments are one of the reasons that the Jaguar brand has received numerous recognitions for vehicle quality.

To register interest in the all-new XJ, customers should visit: www.jaguar.com/allnewxj.

Yeah, I think the back will take some time to get used to too. But on the other hand, I think its quite a leap forward and it will attract more costumers than the last XJ. Really like the interior even though the wood-trimming is kinda weird. Overall I think its well done, grat's to Jaguar for making such a brave move. (finally)

Oh Jaguar, what have you done? I was a big fan of the old XJ. It was cool looking, different from the rest of the pack and imposing. This new one though, I'm not so sure. It looks alot like an XF upfront, and from the sides, which I suppose isn't a bad thing, but the rear is hugely out of proportion. That overhang is too big. It was too big on the old XJ too, but the rear on that car was narrow and had a low profile, but this new one is way too fat. It just looks out of place.

The rear end is awful and the front is kind of ungainly. Small lights, huge grille. But the interior looks very good. It lacks the flair and the luxury looks of the 7-series or S-class interiors but it tries to be something different and it succeeds. What the hell is the deal with the C-pillars?

The interior is nice, much better than the current model. BUT too many damn baby blue lights everywhere, even the vents are lit, like cmon do u really need the vents lit? I have never had a car with lit vents, and i never lost the vent holes, easy to find the hole where air is blowing at you from. Overkill imo.

the rear is terrible, other than tht I think it looks alright, the headlights kinda look like the maserati quattroporte(SP?)but at least this looks more like a Jaguar than the XF, espically the interior, it looks amazing.

July 10, 2009 1:26 AM
@Fer I love the rear, it makes it look very distinct, I could only mistake it for a Bentley. This is a beautiful Automobile. If that rear pillar was body color I think it would make it look very ho-hum. I applaud Jaguar for breaking tradition and trying something new.

Nice body (referring to Elle) at that age with those legs, amazing!. Anyways, the rear looks more terrible than bmw 5 series GT.

July 10, 2009 1:42 AM
no thanks, instead of this i would get the BMW 7series or Merc S-Class or Porsche Pan or AudiA8 even the Lexus LS is on a different level then this. But really, there are lots of nice things in the car, like the interior and maybe the front. But the rear just ruins the car, the same problem with the new E-class. Is it that hard to design a rear of a car?!

benz_man
July 10, 2009 1:52 AM
I'd like to know how nice this was before Tata started mixing their s***** suppliers in. The same suppliers are doing the new Range Rovers and they are awful too. I'm very displeased.

thamzn
July 10, 2009 2:30 AM
It takes about 2.5 years to design and get a car approved. Tata only took over in 2008 and therefore had nothing to do with the design of the new XJ.

benz_man
July 10, 2009 3:23 AM
I wasn't speaking "design". I'm talking component suppliers. If you pay close attention, you'll notice switchgear shared with the updated Range Rovers. I'm very aware of pre-production life-cycles, that's why I wonder what it was "supposed" to be like. You know, back when Ford had control.

rochee
July 10, 2009 4:09 PM
Benz man- No sense taking a poke at Tata. This vehicle was ready to roll 18 months ago. Change is good for Jaguar. People that like the styling of the "old XJ" don't necessarily buy it. This car will be a home run for Jaguar.

benz_man
July 10, 2009 6:09 PM
Originally, Tata made an arrangement with Ford Motor Company to continue using "current" suppliers for Jag and LR models for about 12 months in exchange for payments back to Ford. Like any wise company, Tata has quickly changed suppliers for the updated LR's and the quality hit is obviously apparent to anyone who studies this. Big, hard, high gloss plastic buttons with questionable ergonomic placement and poor haptic feedback. Same for the new LR's "digital instruments" (which the XJ shares). I'm sure Tata had to make a few last minute changes in supplier bases to bring this XJ more in line with its LR fleet. These are obviously not materials that would have been chosen for the Premier Auto Group (remember that?), just look at the quality of new Lincolns. More than likely, those materials families would have been used here. I'm not hating on Tata: wise business decision, poor automotive decision.

I see what Jaguar are trying to do: Give it a Merc CLS like coupe profile. Looking at photo #5260543, (right mouse click, save as...) it doesn't look too bad.

Have to really see it in the metal. But think I am beginning to like it...

July 10, 2009 3:49 AM
Hmm i thought that the XJ was supposed to be an executive car not the new Honda Civic to be bought by little kids that are intrigued by baby blue LED lights everywhere...Like come on are they serious? Did EVERYTHING really need to be LED lit in that horrible colour? Do you see the Merc S class, 7 series, A8, Panarama, Aston Rapide, Quattroporte have those gay lights everywhere, no and that is for a damn good reason, nobody that would buy a car like this wants the interior to be so childish, save that for the Mustang and Focus.

NewGit
July 10, 2009 11:16 AM
I agree with your comments about the LEDs, it is ridiculous. Also too the chrome handles etc that will invariably be plastic with chrome paint are tacky... I guess they need to target "gangstas" too. What is amusing if I am seeing things right, Jaguar seem to be defeating themselves with all this bling by having normal rubber brake / accelerator pedals.

This new pieces demonstrates the new direction of Jaguar - Gorgeous, Stylish and Dynamic.

The design of this car is sensational. Some argue that the reas is horrible. My sense is that it inherets the very legacy of British classic limousine. The reas is similar to but more sylish than that of Bently Arnage and Rolls Royce Phantom.

I also find that with this dubut, Jaguar has somewhat swithched its target market, less towards Mers S, Bimmber 7, more toward Merc Cls, Maserati Quattroporte, Porsche Paranama. Because that segment is not as fiercely competitive as S/7/a8 segment, but still large enough for Jaguar to grasp some share.

This is the latest leap of Jaguar, with their recently updated website and market campaign. I wish Jaguar good luck.

This is a new "XJ". Full-stop.

Now, spend time taking in the car's "lines" and "design-signature". Remember the "XF" at launch? Good. Now, let go of your in-built "mental joy-stick" and switch to "auto-pilot" and allow your emotions take in the necessary new "path". Then read my comments below. Taken from this same website, "Jaguar XF Officially Revealed in Detail" - August 28th 2007:

"Jaguar are to be applauded for the new "XF". The audaciousness/boldness of the styling's "design change" answers the question, "how would Jaguar break-away from the past?" This car allows for a new "Corporate image" and much wider commercial viability in the global market.

It's a clean break from the past and allows Jaguar "design-joy" for decades to come. Well done!!"

You will now find yourself at a cruising altitude of 50,000 feet taking in "the view". There are things to criticise about the new "XJ" but you cannot deny its "intent". It exists to prowl the jungle.

From some angles, this thing is dead sexy. From other angles, hmmph - not so much. Great, fast-looking greenhouse. Nice stretch to the c-pillar moulding treatment (that does not copy the Hoffmeister kink or anything from Audi). The oddly long rear overhang and disruptive attempt to "pull" the rear glass over the c-pillars are less successful (in this silver-painted model). Perhaps the c-pillar cladding will work better on a black or dark blue car. The entire package looks vry good: It's not bland, it's not retro.

I am kind of shocked. The first time I saw this I thought... eh, I don't know. But the more I look at it the more I like it. I think the biggest issue is that it does not look like what we normally think of with a Jaguar. The fact is that if this design came from any number of other makers, people would be raving and ranting about it. The hard reality of it is that people have complained for years about Jaguar being stuck in the past and too conservative, and now you have something different, and guess what... people are still complaining. The car is beautiful once you get past what you think a Jag is supposed to look like. The company has been forced to redefine their style after doing repeats of the same design for almost 40 years! As for me, I love it! It's beautiful and unique and nothing else in this segment looks like it. Nothing. Just like when the 1997 Audi A6 hit the market and no other midsized sedan looked like it. Now most do in some way.

When I saw the FRONT of the all new XJ, the aggressive forehead lights, the grill, the smooth sculpturing, the edge lines moving up just like a jaguar that about to attack, the young muscles, the grooving at the fog lights area and the nickel lines, back in the middle with the grill, the cutting is successful, the continues side line (that looks like folded paper) from the very low front through the doors till the back here we come to the BACK, why the designers did that to this beautiful car? What they were thinking about? To create a unique car? It is already a unique one, it's an XJ. The silhouette of the back is odd, while it's okay, but by these details (NO) IT IS UGLY, the lines look unmanageable, random indiscriminative (random), poor in the contrary of the front, it seems like they were out of ideas to make something complete. The up looking of the car made me feel breathless, it's a WoW, I watched the video so many times, but I'm really sorry I couldn't forgive the back.

The new XJ shows a very controverse design-language. The agressive frontdesign and the avantgardistic rearend give a high contrast to all other Jaguar and to all other sedans of the current market. All others? No! I think about the Citroen C6. It hasn't an agressive front design, but the long windowsideshapes and the taillight-theme has some same aspects then the XJ. I like the Design overall. I only can't really understand the black c-pillar in combination with the silver windowtrim wich frame the teardrop-design. That looks unfinished. The rearwindow looks great with this black frames and the teardropdesign too, but both don't fit each other..

Sacto8780

I think Jaguar is potentially making a HUGE mistake with the radically-restyled XJ. We're forgetting that in this market segment (mostly older car buyers), they don't like a car that looks radically styled, as BMW found out much to their chagrin when they went from the E38 to E65 model 7 Series saloon (BMW didn't win back buyers until the more conservatively-styled F01 model came out late last year).

Jaguar could get away with a more radically styled XF, since the XF is aimed at a younger buyer demographic.

1. Overall, the comments on WCF are way too negative. Every debut of a luxo/German car is compared to the stylistic language of Hyundai.

2. I don't care about any wack comparisons--The new XJ is stealing Rapide heat. More than 60% savings in ownership yet it exudes more-or-less the same old world grace, and powerful effect.

Kudos.
