Some new photos and details of the 2010 Mercedes Benz SLS AMG Gullwing have been released.  The car is expected to debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September with a €150,000 pricetag.

One of the car's designers told Auto Motor und Sport about using the company's heritage to their benefit, while modernizing as much as possible.  This car harkens back to the roof-hinged doors the automaker used on the beautiful 1954 Mercedes 300 SL.  "...there must be a modern, entirely subscribed purist interpretation of a sports car for the 21st century," the designer told the magazine.

Designer Hartmut Sinkwitz, formerly in charge of design at Smart, said "The proportions should be consistent," having a lengthy hood with the cab seated upon the rear axle.

The airplane-inspired interior design is fully modernized, instead of being stripped down for weight.  A full-featured infotainment system sits front and center, with the stereo, Bluetooth, climate control, COMAND, and shifter mounted below, and surrounded with either aluminum or carbon-fiber trim.  Aluminum pedals match the metal used on the vents, gauges, steering wheel, and the rings around the controls.  Two gauges are placed behind the multi-function wheel, with a computer display in-between them.  Leather sports seats can be chosen in at least five different colors.  You can view the pictures at right to see close-ups of these images.

Of the exterior, Sinkwitz says, "..we have designed an extra steep A-pillar so the driver's field of view is not restricted."  The gullwing doors open up to 70 degree angles, giving access to the 1.08m high vehicle.

The front mid-engined vehicle will get a 571 hp V8 engine producing up to 650 Nm of torque.  Top speed is electronically limited to 315 km/h (196 mph), with the driver controlling the engine via the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

I'm sure they mean front-mid engined. You do, right WCF?

Enough with these teasers Merc, they're getting annoying.

And also, how much would it cost, really, to give it a couple of unique aircon/audio control knobs? The dials do look brilliant though!

It actually says front mid-engined, which just means the engine will still be front mounted, but sit completely behind the front axle.

Wow that interior looks good & the dials look superb but please show more of the exterior since they got the shape of the 1955 300 slr. Now I am eagerly waiting for this car to be released.

The interior looks lovely, apart from that CD player. The leather trim, the carbon fibre and aluminium slashes look fabulous, but the CD headunit looks tacky and cheap. Get rid of it Mercedes. This car has to be as perfectly sculpted as the original 300 SL Gullwing. Make a bespoke unit for the SLS

Looks amazingly similar to the old slk / crossfire. This thing better have a nuclear engine to make up for that interior.

Fishes,

What are you talking about?? the interior is beautiful, as well as very different from the SLK/Crossfire. Try Google Images in case you've never seen the interior of any of those 2 cars before

Interior is very Merc-ish, but price is too Ferrari-sh.

it's supposed to go against the F430 and the 911 turbo , the price is ok.

if the steering wheel is less C-classish it might be more exotic.

Well...not just the steering wheels... The audio system is the same as the Command unit in my C-Class and the HVAC controls look the same as well the pedals that came with the AMG appearance package.

But no bad thing since they all work great and function well with precise feel.

The only thing i like about it are the doors. The interior is quite disappointing and boring to me, just like any other Mercedes. I wouldn´t pay that money for this (if i had it).. Prefer a TVR or whatever.

im liking the car so far, but im kind of gettin tired of it w/ all of these "Offical spy shots" and such. but it's a Mercedes-Benz, its not like its gonna look bad. I just not suddenly go excited to see it w/o the camo though. Imma mess

That audio unit looks like it's been lifted out of the E-Class--it's the exact same. I wish they would've kept the interior more in line with the initial sketches. This is a bit too bland for my tastes and for this price point. Disappointing.

The exterior looks absolutely gorgeous however and I'm sure this thing is going to perform with the best of em.

My opinion is that this car will never ever be a replacement of the SLR. It is more like a renew of an old design of mercedes.

History lesson the old car which had the same door was one of the most uncomfortable and difficult to get in/out in mercedes history.

(THIS DOOR DESIGN IS STUPID & FOR SHOWING OFF)

maybe the SLS Black Series will be the SLR replacement. they have the know-how , they have the tech , they could put two turbos on this engine and go nuts. this car is a lot lighter than the SLR, it has a lot of potential.

M power, I have to comment on your post. I have gotten in the SLR, I am 6ft 2 and weigh about 235lbs and it was like being in a coffin, the SLR was not comfortable at all unless you had the door window open, Also got into an SLR convert and with the top up it was not easy. The SLR is NOT a friendly daily driver, not you would 500K and drive it daily, but you would want to know that you could with comfort. This car will be beautiful in silver/back combo
