F1 Boss Bernie Ecclestone sympathizes with Hitler and Saddam Hussein

Fills news void with bizarre interview

Bernie Ecclestone has opened the door to a tirade of condemnation by decrying democracy and defending the world's most universal tyrants Adolf Hitler and Saddam Hussein.

In a highly controversial and bizarre interview with Britain's Times newspaper, the F1 chief executive said democracy "hasn't done a lot of good for many countries" and then went on to talk about some well-known despots.

"Terrible to say this I suppose, but apart from the fact that Hitler got taken away and persuaded to do things that I have no idea whether he wanted to do or not, he was in the way that he could command a lot of people able to get things done," the 78-year-old said.

Ecclestone also slammed Britain's decision to support the US in overthrowing Iraq's Hussein because "he was the only one who could control that country".

As for the Taliban in Afghanistan, "it was the same".

FIA president Max Mosley was enraged at the recent suggestion he is a dictator, but Ecclestone said being decisive is a positive trait.

"I like people who make up their minds. If you have to keep referring to your grandmother before you do anything I think that's dumb. I make decisions, sometimes wrong, sometimes right -- so long as you get more things right than wrong then that's ok," he said.

Ecclestone defended Mosley's fondness for sadomasochistic sex with prostitutes because "people can do what they like", and actually thinks the son of famous fascist Sir Oswald Mosley "would do a super job" as British prime minister.

He jokes that women wouldn't make good racing drivers because "they might take maternity leave", says people on unemployment benefits are "scroungers", and believes former British PM Tony Blair "probably told a lot of lies".

Ecclestone's Hitler remarks enraged numerous Jewish groups and spokesmen, while Conservative UK politician John Whittingdale remarked: "These are extraordinary views and I'm appalled that anybody could hold them."

He's right about the Taliban and Saddam Hussein though. Their countries are really thriving since their invasion by the Great Democracies aren't they.

It's one thing to bash the US, and I'm all for that, but suggesting any nation is better off under an oppressive regime of a government is a really awful thing to say.

whats wrong with bashing the us? after WW2, they have killed more innocent non-military civilians than any other country. i remember seeing a documentary that a small island and its population was heavily effect by americas nuclear test that the island had to be evacuated. most of their offspring were hadicapped as well.... no compensation...it was kept secret...how horrifying is that... also america thinks its the most civilized nation in the world yet it has produced the most serial murder rapist, the most horrifying characters, than the entire world put together.

among te top ten economies of the world, americas murder rate is higher than all those countries put together, including china.....america is a killing machine

Hmm, this explains a lot, this old lunatic thinks that democracy is bad, so he made himself the dictator of F1, but like most of the dictators he will end miserably.

democracy is a nice idea, like many other utopian visions. but sadly it's impossible for humans to make it work. homo homini lupus.

What does any of this have to do with cars?

Its quite simple. Bernie is the boss of F1. F1 uses cars, fast cars.

very little - in fact the nazi regime founded Volkswagen, the VW group includes lambo, audi, skoda, etc. - none of which are in the paddock...

I guess now nobody needs an explanation to why F1 is going down the toilet.

A reactionary chatterbox like this old fart is useless for sport. I wonder if he even remembers that F1 is a sport at all.

i hate both Mosley and Bernie, they are severely deranged people and most things they say are senile blabber. but sometimes a deranged mind says things that are true. things that are considered so ugly, disturbed, sick, immoral that a normal mind has difficulties accepting them, but that doesn't mean they are not true.the truth can hurt and it's often very ugly.

the world should be balance between democracy and communism and It is true that Saddam can control Iraq. Only a good dictator can run a country like Iraq. Just like Bernie controlling F1. =)

let's not forget - there is a lot of arabic money involved in f1 - fact: the arabic nations want israel off the map... this controversy will not have negative effect on his pocket.

but bernie is WRONG - good leaders have good ethics - since mosley's nazi scandal the sport has suffered. 'bad' people breed trouble for whatever they're involved with.

note: i am in no way against arabic/muslim people - just religious fanaticism/ideology driven by hatred. arabic nations have huge sway over european policies and this will not be the last time we see this sort of controversy coming from european leaders.

You're very right astroturf777. I wouldn't be surprised if Bernie was influenced by the many conversations he's had with the Arabic moneymakers. Also having a ton of money and doing what he does he sounds like he doesn't care about a whole lot about values, morals and the motives behind evil and good.

Oscar Wilde wrote something fascinating in Dorian Gray, I don't remember the exact quote, but the idea was that the bad things you do are etched into your face.

What does this face tell you? http://i.a.cnn.net/si/2007/writers/lewis_franck/01/26/ecclestone/t1_ecclestone.jpg

How about this one in comparison? http://images.google.com/hosted/life/f?q=76+year+old+people&prev=/images%3Fq%3D76%2Byear%2Bold%2Bpeople%26ndsp%3D20%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dmozilla%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:unofficial%26sa%3DN%26start%3D80%26um%3D1&imgurl=3895d8e80a674464

The polls would seem to suggest you'll find fewer right wing extremists, which you could classify as those sympathising with dictators, in the UK than France, Italy and Spain.

When I was a boy was world so colorful. What happened, msinisa? What goes to democracy then Churchill is right. It is totally crap and our elected leaders are stupid, rests are idiots. Extremely bad are things in EU and USA. Canadians, New Zealanders, these Latinos and Aussies are not better. I love them all.

The US is not a democracy folks. Its a democratic republic. The system would work if people would follow it but the laws are not being followed and since the press is virtually owned by the government no one is holding the government accountable. As for bernie's comments; just when you thought max was the biggest fool in the world, bernie proves he isn't.

Alfafox5
July 6, 2009 8:36 PM
@mnovakowski - Thank you for stating what was on my mind - if the US were run simply by our beautiful constitution, as a Republic that employs some democratic methods - then there would not be such a mess in the states. So, what does all this have to do with cars? Cars are an extension of the pursuit of freedom as experienced on a physical plane. As long as we can't fly like birds, we do our best with the speed and exhilaration of motoring along at a rapid pace... briefly forgetting our crude human limitations - we soar.

Schizo0223
July 7, 2009 5:31 AM
Amen to that...you put the thoughts of many people that come to this site so precisely!

Give us an open road and we will have freedom!
