BMW has released official details of the new X1 SUV (SAV). The smallest X vehicle in the range is 4.45 metres long, has a wheelbase of 2.76 metres, is 1.545 metres high and the lightest model weighs in at 1,615kg (EU). It is designed to have a low-slung rear window to make it look the sporting car that it is, and it features wide wheel arches for an aggressive squat. The signature kidney grille is as bold and muscular as it is on the 7 Series. Standard wheels coming with the range are 17-inch alloys.

Contours and sharp lines are evident all the way to the sides and back, including the "Hofmeister kink" at the C pillar. Further confirming that this is a true BMW design are the L-shaped rear lights clusters with sharp jagged edges.

Inside the X1 gives an elevated seating position to each passenger while the driver benefits from a driver-facing "surfboard" dashboard that made BMWs of yesteryear so different from their rivals. The new iDrive system is installed and can be mated to a USB port, a CD player, and six Pro Logic 7 HiFi loud speakers. A rear parking camera and/or Park Distance Control can also be specified from the options list.

Six models will be available at launch. Only one of these is petrol-powered and that is the X1 xDrive28i. Fitted to this version is the 3.0-litre straight six with 258hp (190kW) and torque of 310Nm. The rest of the lineup runs on diesel, starting with the sDrive18d making 143hp (105kW) and 320Nm of torque. Then comes the sDrive20d which produces 177hp (130kW) and 350Nm. Both these RWD vehicles are coupled with a 6-speed manual gearbox.

Higher up the rung are the manual xDrive18d with the same figures of 143hp (105kW) and 320Nm, an xDrive20d of 177hp (130kW) and 350Nm as well as the thrusty xDrive23d. It has the 2.0-litre twin turbo motor that does 204hp (150kW) and 400Nm of maximum pulling power.

Customers living in the USA will start getting their consignment of the BMW X1 some time in 2011. US-bound engines and powertrains will be confirmed closer to launch.

I agree. And what's with the brown color? There is no color less sporting than brown. It reminds me of the malaise of the 1070's. Brown Ford Mavericks, brown Chevy Malibus, brown GMC trucks & vans, brown Cadillacs. Yuck.

I think BMW will offer the xDrive23d version of the X1 in the USA market, especially with the new Obama Administration fuel economy mandates.

because Chris Bangle was gone...that's why! now their new designs are...plain, ugly, no character at all. just look at this stupid X1...i thought i was looking at a new Pontiac Aztek!

i thought Pontiac will fade out by 2010! why they're still releasing new model? oh wait...oops! the BMW designers digged out something from the trash of Pontiac design studio...without Chris Bangle, they have no idea where they're going...

the car looks really, really small especially in the photo where that guy is putting in his surfboard! how the heck will the thing fit? and either that guy is too tall or the car is too small.

but the interior is super nice though...

Firstly: this car was designed when Chris Bangle was working for BMW, as well as a few future models (new 5 series F10 i.e.). Secondly: I like it. I don't know why, obviously it's not a looker, but it has something that attracts my atention.

please double check your info. started from new 7 & Z4, designs are NOT coming from Chris Bangle's influrences. the designs language at BMW is totally different since then.

Yawn..! Another small(er) SUV. And who approved the boring design. X1, X3, X5, X6, 5Series GT, 3 Series GT.... the list of similar automobiles in BMW portfolio goes on and on. give me a break and for a change do something different. BMW, you are losing your fan base quickly. I am no longer a BMW owner and remain only a reluctant fan now.

July 2, 2009 6:49 PM
I agree that the car is not among other pretty BMW models but I don't think you were a BMW fan. As a matter of fact, a fan is someone who supports someone/something no matter how tough he/she has to go through. Every BMW fan owns a BMW but not every BMW owner is a BMW fan. With no offense but you're just a BMW owner.

Look Mr. X6M, I don't think the X1 is BEAUTIFUL,,, as an X5 4.8i owner, an X5 M potential owner,, I look at this car as the little sister of X5, X6 that didn't turn out as pretty, but could grow up and become more beautiful when people are used to it (and as BMW gives out facelifts to this little car)...

Maybe she got her a little bit from the ugly side of the family,, where the X3 got her looks (poor girl)

Cheers

July 3, 2009 1:34 PM
@'khd' - its the ONLY car in its range. not hard to be 'the best looking suv in its range' when its theres nothing to compare it to. with that logic it is also the fastest, most fuel efficient, well equipped car in its range... but most of all it is also the ugliest.

personally i liked the blurred teaser image more!

Honestly if we can get rid of the ugly black plastic cladding on the bodywork (moustache as someone named it above) I think it looks alright. It definitely has the new 7 Series influences in there. It's a nice evolution of the BMW design language.

It is much more interesting than the X3 for sure.

automobile007
July 17, 2009 3:27 PM
yeah why do BMW insist on covering their smallest SUV in that cheap looking black cladding? i think its an attempt to make it look 'rugged'. i heard the new generation x3 will loose it though

Your opinions that this is "ugly" will sure influence on the sales!!!!!!! haha

What is the point of another SAV/GT/Station Wagon? We have the X1, X3, X5, X6, 5er GT . . . When is it going to end?!?!

Seems like BMW is cannabalizing it's own sales.

another SIV(Sport Inutility Vehicle) ...i wonder when BMW will stop doing this crap and stick to their original pattern and series.I love the major 3,5,7 and the X5 and the X6(which of course is a true SUV not like X1).X1 is for people who want an SUV but dont have enought money for an X5...so they buy a tiny SUV...thats bullshit and everyone knows that...but as usual there will be a lot of BMW lovers with a few bucks in their pockets to buy their wifes and children a little SUV...pardon me SIV.long live M3! btw 5 series GT sux as well another niche car

Another proof that BMW try hard is never good enough production to the competition, inside and out.

It basically looks like the new 7 from the front. Its really unattractive and the interior follows the same design.
