Several high quality photos of BMW's upcoming X1 crossover have surfaced from German magazine FOCUS Online.

Looking virtually identical to the X1 Concept which debuted at the last year's Paris Motor Show, the production X1 features a dynamic appearance with a bold (if controversial) front end. Overall, the design borrows several styling elements from BMW's other SUVs (the X3, X5 and X6) as well as the recently introduced 5-series GT.

Inside, the baby bimmer boasts a luxurious interior that would make current X3 owners jealous. The most dominate design trait is a massive dashboard that houses BMW's prolific iDrive system. Elsewhere, the sport-ute features a fantastic looking Z4-inspired cockpit with all the major controls oriented towards the driver.

When the X1 is launched later this fall, base models will include the fuel-efficient xDrive18i and xDrive18d. Further up the pecking order is the 177hp (130kW) xDrive20d which sprints from 0-60 mph in 8.4 seconds while consuming 5.8 liters of diesel per 100km. A slightly more powerful xDrive23d will also be offered, it features 204hp (150kW) which enables it to run from 0-60 mph in 7.3 seconds before topping out at 223 km/h (139 mph). The final model is the petrol powered xDrive28i which boasts a top speed of 230 km/h (143 mph).

Although all the launch models will feature xDrive (all-wheel drive), it is widely expected the X1 will be offered with sDrive (rear-wheel drive) shortly after production begins.

Look for the X1 to be officially unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

Controversial front end? hardly. This thing is entirely predictable. The only controversial part seems to be the gaping panel gaps - check out the crevice between the grill and trailing edge of the bonnet...

The gap between the bonnet and the grille is inherent to the design, all cars with a similar design have it (Volvo, Mitsubishi ...). It would require exceptionally high precision engineering and mounting and to make the gap appear smaller. In reality it is no larger than the other panel gaps, it appears larger because of the curvature of the bonnet. But I agree it's not looking good and the designers should know better.

ivanadrive: isn't "exceptionally high precision engineering and mounting " what we expect from BMW??? It is certainly what I expect. That huge gap is not something that should be there, nor does it make the car look prettier. In the past, they hid it by making it in line with the grille and headlights. If they want to deliberately make it look like that, they could have put more effort in it to do a better job. I do not put BMW and Mit in the same class. The fact of the matter is that it isnot refined and it is a fail!

I think the point is that it is cheaper and targets the younger guys. I would imagine that the X3 will look better and will cost more. But then again, this will steal sales from X3 as well as GLK and Q3, which is the main objective. But I doubt with a look like this, the X1 will be abe o constantly steal sale from th Q5. But that's the designers' problem

I have the same feeling... where's the modern and sleek factors????I would not use those words to describe the exterior of this car and it is most definately not what young guys are looking for.

Pitty, I thoght this would have been a good competitor for GLK; instead it is dull and absolutely predictable. GLK isn't a great SUV but atleast it has some "edge" in its exterior design. BMW's rearend looks like Citroen.

you mean GLK,, not MLK!

and yes, I do agree with you, this car isn't that great for a BMW, though it is better than the concept, and the interior is quite nice...

I am saying this to you as an owner of an X5 4.8i owner, I love my car, I like the X6 also, I hate the X3,, and I hope BMW redesign it soon and make it fit with the X5 and X6...

the GLK is really nice,,, Mercedes really know how to make their cars stand out!,,, Audi does really well with their Q5

I am looking forward for the X5 M, as I will replace my current X5 with the "M" version next year :)

Cheers

I would want 3 added options to this Bmw before i buy it, first the M-Kit, then the Panoramic sun roof and last im not liking the gear! Why dont they put the new one like they have on all their cars?!

I wanted to puke when I first saw this. and what's up with the half way chrome which was suppose to go all the way around the windows??? Those rear lights are just evil. black plastics came from Tata. This is a premium car!!! What are black unsprayed plastics bits doing there? How much does BMW want us to pay to have a sprayed as an extra just to make this car look better? The silver plates also don't go with the matt black. If the black was high gloss, I would have accepted.

LOVE IT! LOVE IT! With the new F01 7 Series, newz Z4 and now this new X1, the BMW design team are really on a roll. I love the new front end design philosophy.. the new extra large BMW kidney grills.. the overesize light clusters.. the upright stance of the grills and fron bumper. Much more purposeful and aggressive.

This grille is no that big. They are too narrow in my opnion and that bumper and nose bit protrudes in a terrible way from the bonnet gap down. Look at the side view, the entire front of the car from the windscreen seems to be stuck onto the rest of the car. The rest of teh car is bulky but the bonnet does not rise high enough to meet the windscreen. YUK!

Ok, it is a tad better than the X3, but both cars are just ugly period. Silly fanboys/girls will buy it due to it having the badge. Ugh.

Could be predictable... but the design is just so delicious. Most beautiful BMW in a time.

besides being a dull dull dull design... i'm not quite sure if bmw has done a good job in its marketing efforts to 'leak' so many details of this car, week after week. since it is an absolutely boring car... getting the public 'used' to it and taking away the surprise factor seems just a little stupid.

The wheels on the brown one are sweet. If they ever put the twin turbo 3.0 liter in this I'd be all over it as a alternative to the 3 series touring.

As much as I didn't liked the concept, I think this one is lovely. I guess this is a matter of colour. It's really really nice compared to Q5 and GLK

What has happened to the BMW's we all used to love? Their design team need sacking, seriously, this isn't even a joke anymore. BMW's car designs have been AWFUL in recent years, absolutely dreadful - their only recent "stunning" looking car that comes to mind is the 3-series Coupe/M3, all their other designs have been average or below average (Z4, X1, X6, X5, 7-series etc).

They're becoming a laughing stock in the motor industry, it's beyond a joke now, they need to get their act together.

Say whatever you like, the overall package of this car is spot on, and is going to tear the market apart...!

TheKing
July 2, 2009 7:11 PM
If it was better looking, it would have been sucha great success... those who love BMW and those who don't would actually admire the good looks, just like the Z4. Most people that I showed this car to frowned when they looked at it.

ugly. the more i look at it, the more it looks like something from the trash of Pontiac designers...what's wrong with BMW? days without Chris Bangle...going down.

TheKing

completely agree. I think those who think this is beautiful actually know nothing about what an elegant car should look like.
