My thoughts exactly. I was like "OH SH*T! It's not Aprils Fools' Day!?!?!"

What the?! I would buy one in the color "Casino Royale" if this thing goes into production though.

Wow! I checked the date but, no, it's not 1 April.
I still can't believe this is real although I have to say I quite like it! Doesn't AM have a technology agreement with Daimler though? A rehashed Smart would make more sense.
June 29, 2009 9:21 am
You read my mind .. my first thought was that it has to be an out of step April fools day joke
June 29, 2009 10:32 am
We also took a "wa wa what?" double take when we received the press release this morning. But i can confirm it's real as Toyota has released a simultaneous statement as well.

This is not April 1st. I just saw this and roared laughing - What is Aston Martin thinking!?
Make a smaller car by all means but something like a rival to the Boxster / Cayman is far more in fitting with Aston Martins style.
Surely this will never happen...
June 29, 2009 9:21 am
Hmmm, the Smart has never made any profit for Daimler, only losses, thus stockholders' calls to either terminate it, or unload it to somebody else . . .
June 29, 2009 11:49 am
Small cars hardly make any profit due to low sale price, and disproportionate manufacturing cost when compared to larger segment vehicles. This is why companies such as Ford and opel try to make as many derivatives to maximise the cost sharing, e.g. Mazda 2 and Fiesta, Fiat 500 and Ka etc.

a V8 in an iQ that looks like a AM.
that boggles the mind, but THAT surely would interest me. lol
June 29, 2009 10:11 am
When the new environmental rules in the US start to take effect, supercar and luxury car makers will have to choose between building slower and smaller car with disproportionate wheel base, or just give away another tiny car, or electric car, to compensate the overall fleet average. Let say if you are selling a Murcielago with 8 MPG, give away a tiny iQ with 55 MPG, and your fleet average will be 32.5 MPG. Get it?

All the purists said that the Cayenne was a dumb idea, but it allowed Porsche to create newer and better iterations of the Carrera and Boxster. It allowed them to re-enter racing on the factory level, and will allow them to continue on (minus the whole failed hostile VW take-over). The same will be true if Aston has a hit on their hands. I think I'd rather swallow my pride and allow this vehicle (which looks like a caracture version of the DBS) to exist than have Aston slowly sink under during this ecnomic crisis and 'green revolution.' Dare I say: if you're a true car fan, you'd applaud this car coming to market.
June 29, 2009 10:20 am
I really hope that u are right and agree about allowing for this car to exist for Aston's sake!
June 29, 2009 10:38 am
Obviously you have no sense of brand image. Cayenne was not an anti Porsche image. This AM however is. Since AM is not owned by any car company, they are doing it to meet average US CAFE requirements. I think they could have taken the hybrid route but thy would have been more expensive and challenging. So they resorted to rebadging tatics. If AM were still owned by Ford, this wouldn't be necessary.
June 29, 2009 4:31 pm
No where does it say that this is a permenant thing, car-o-bar. For all we know they could still be working on a hybrid for use in several years. Thing is that for this moment, in this economic crisis where Trillions are being lost, this is by far the cheapest method for Aston Martin, which is a smart idea. Saving every little last dollar helps in the long run. Also lets not forget that design, and implementation of a hybrid would take time. Ironically in this market time is of the essence. Aston Martin did a great thing for their brand image, showing that they "too care about the environment" by creating an eco-friendly car as opposed to Aston strictly making gas-guzzling, tree eating cars. Also if they give the car away with ever car purchase, then the Mini-Aston is still just as exclusive and will show that at home you have an Aston Martin but today you decided to save a few birds from choking an exhaust. The parent could even give their kid the car to take to school, and will show "Hey everybody my dad has an Aston Martin."
Now tell me how the Cayenne was not an Anti-Porsche image? The Cayenne made purists all accross the world scream in agony. They all screamed "This maker of fine two-door sport coup?s is making a bloated SUV with a massive engine thrown in the front!" Porschephiles sayed they'd never buy a Porsche again because of the Cayenne. Fastforward six years and everyone has just about forgotten about how the Cayenne "is not a Porsche" and they've grown to accept the fact that the Cayenne saved Porsche. Sir, I believe it is you who has no sense of brand imaging.
June 29, 2009 8:33 pm
Hahaha...! I can gurantee this is not going to turn out to be a good idea for AM. Reskined Toyota IQ free with each AM DB6 or DB9 is just going to dilute the image. This is not payless shoes BOGO sale mister. AM's image is going to suffer because of this. I guess AM does not care because they do not have enough customers to lose in the first place. Plus customers will pay for cygnet anyways, Cygnet? Isn't that the commercial name for ARTIFICIAL diamond kind of thing... need I say more.
June 29, 2009 10:06 pm
Funny thing is, it actually looks really good, and it's a lot more original than endless facsimiles of the DB9. NauAudiS4 and MerHC have it right, introducing a small car has huge advantages. Just wondering if they'd be allowed to count it as part of their fleet if they didn't put an Aston badge on it, but created a new premium-city-car badge? It'd save their image some dignity...

Sh1t.
Aston, leave this stuff to project kahn or whatever their name is

First Question: Why Aston and not Lagonda - I thought the whole point of revitalising the Lagonda brand with that ridiculous white whale of an SUV was to differentiate the sports cars from the rest of the range - family saloons, city cars, etc.
Second question: Downsizing is one thing. The Toyota iQ is taking things to an extreme. Couldn't they have made an Aston Martin Corolla instead?
Third Question: A combination of the first two really, doesn't this take away too many of the inherent Aston Martin values/qualities/traits to even be allowed? If what MerHC says is true, great, but at what cost to the brand? It's not pretty, it's not loud, it's not RWD, it's not a GT car, it doesn't have a big, V-layout engine. So that's power, beauty and soul out the window. I'm not going to walk into an Aston showroom and say, "The DBS is nice, but it doesn't have clever enough packaging and its engine has eight cylinders too many.."
Fourth question: Why on earth couldn't they make it look any better? Bolting on hood scoops and side vents, and extending the headlights a bit does not make a Toyota an Aston Martin. Just, no.
June 29, 2009 12:22 pm
I don't have a problem with Aston doing a small car. But come on please find something better than this ugly thing to work with prehaps a MX5 would be a good start.
