Aston Martin reckons it has made a smart move, so to speak, by conceptualising a small city car. Based on the Toyota iQ the Aston Martin Cygnet is a mix of luxury, compactness and environmental friendliness.
Dr Ulrich Bez, the Chief Executive of AM says: "Now is the right time for Aston Martin to take this first bold step to embark on this special project - made possible with the support of an organisation of Toyota's stature and capability and the intelligent design and perfect city car package of the iQ."
The Cygnet does not signal the end of desirable beasts like the DB9 and the DBS. It will merely add to the range and give AM access to new markets.
"The offering of a ‘Cygnet' with a DBS, DB9 or Vantage is a unique combination of opposites," said Bez, "and a novel transport solution allowing intelligent and sensitive mobility on an exclusive and innovative level."
The iQ is not a bad place to start with its EURO NCAP 5-star safety package and environmental consciousness. Aston Martin seems to be going into the same territory that Mercedes-Benz entered in the early 1990s with the smart where it initially partnered with Swiss watch maker Swatch. More details will be revealed once the project has been given final approval which Dr Bez expects to be in the not too distance future.

Aston Martin has developed a new luxury commuter concept; the ‘Cygnet' which will offer customers a distinctive, intelligent and exclusive solution for urban travel in style and luxury.
The concept will offer Aston Martin trademark design in a commuter car package based on the critically acclaimed Toyota iQ with a Euro NCAP 5-star safety package.
The ‘Cygnet' concept represents a creative, environmentally conscious solution, being small, yet with presence - and highly fuel efficient, now combined with the prestige of Aston Martin's luxury brand ownership.
Aston Martin, the world leader in exclusive niche engineering is collaborating on this concept with Toyota the world leader in volume, quality and reliability. Although vastly different in size, Toyota and Aston Martin share the philosophy of engineering excellence and innovation underlined by a strong passion for cars.
Aston Martin Chief Executive, Dr Ulrich Bez said: "Now is the right time for Aston Martin to take this first bold step to embark on this special project - made possible with the support of an organisation of Toyota's stature and capability and the intelligent design and perfect city car package of the iQ."
"Much work is still required, but I am confident that this project could become reality in the not too distant future. This concept - akin to an exclusive tender to a luxury yacht - will allow us to apply Aston Martin design language, craftsmanship and brand values to a completely new segment of the market."
"The offering of a ‘Cygnet' with a DBS, DB9 or Vantage is a unique combination of opposites and a novel transport solution allowing intelligent and sensitive mobility on an exclusive and innovative level."

* Toyota IQ £10.000
* Aston Martin Cygnet £20.000 "Guessing".
I still can't believe this is real although I have to say I quite like it! Doesn't AM have a technology agreement with Daimler though? A rehashed Smart would make more sense.
Make a smaller car by all means but something like a rival to the Boxster / Cayman is far more in fitting with Aston Martins style.
Surely this will never happen...

Now tell me how the Cayenne was not an Anti-Porsche image? The Cayenne made purists all accross the world scream in agony. They all screamed "This maker of fine two-door sport coupés is making a bloated SUV with a massive engine thrown in the front!" Porschephiles sayed they'd never buy a Porsche again because of the Cayenne. Fastforward six years and everyone has just about forgotten about how the Cayenne "is not a Porsche" and they've grown to accept the fact that the Cayenne saved Porsche. Sir, I believe it is you who has no sense of brand imaging.
Aston, leave this stuff to project kahn or whatever their name is
Second question: Downsizing is one thing. The Toyota iQ is taking things to an extreme. Couldn't they have made an Aston Martin Corolla instead?
Third Question: A combination of the first two really, doesn't this take away too many of the inherent Aston Martin values/qualities/traits to even be allowed? If what MerHC says is true, great, but at what cost to the brand? It's not pretty, it's not loud, it's not RWD, it's not a GT car, it doesn't have a big, V-layout engine. So that's power, beauty and soul out the window. I'm not going to walk into an Aston showroom and say, "The DBS is nice, but it doesn't have clever enough packaging and its engine has eight cylinders too many.."
Fourth question: Why on earth couldn't they make it look any better? Bolting on hood scoops and side vents, and extending the headlights a bit does not make a Toyota an Aston Martin. Just, no.

but if they ever consider selling aston martin-ized toyotas to anyone willing to pay for it... than that's the worst thing they could have ever done to its brand.
PS - The ideea would be great if used to an advertising like : buy one get two Aston Martin, like they get the need of their buyers for mobility in crowded towns .. and you pay for the supercar but you also get a small AM to have fun with in the city.

oh no... shame on you, aston!
i'd go for the aston martin prius... but a jaguar nano would be pretty interesting too!
and lets think about the names: Vanquish DB7 DB9 DBs one-77 and the all new Aston Martin Cygnet.
