Our spy photographers have managed to catch Mercedes testing their next generation ML-Class SUV.

Although little is known about the upcoming model, it is speculated that the new ML will wear the W166 codename when in goes into production in October 2011. This likely means the new ML model will have its market launch in 2012 possibly as a 2013 model year.

While heavily camouflaged prototype makes it hard to gather a concise picture of redesigned sport-ute's shape, it appears the new model will bear a strong family resemblance to its predecessors. The spy photos also seem to suggest the next generation ML will grow a few inches in length, which should result in a roomier cabin with added cargo capacity.

Power will likely be provided by a variety of engines, including upgraded versions of today's 3.5-liter V6, 5.5-liter V8, and several diesels. The next generation ML AMG is even speculated to receive twin-turbochargers which should enable it to produce 570 hp (425 kW). In a nod to the green movement, a gasoline-electric hybrid ML is almost a certainty while a plug-in hybrid remains possible.

Mercedes recently announced they would spend $290 million dollars (US) to upgrade their Tuscaloosa, Alabama plant to build the next generation of SUVs (the plant currently builds the ML-Class, GL-Class and R-Class).

I want to see the ML competing with the likes of the X5/X6/RangeRoverSport, but as always the ML is not designed well, nobody wants a ML. But everybody wants an X6! They should design this ML from scratch, meaning a complete new design. At the moment, every new BMW car is 5 steps infront of those from Mercedes. Just wait for the new 5series/6series/X1 which im sure will look better then the new mercedes cars, a recent example the new e-class. Being a mercedes fan, if things dont improve, im going to move onto BMW or Audi.

In which case you'll take a step up in the world ;) Seriously though, V8TT for the 63AMG? How likely is that when the 63AMG engine in the E-CLass isn't TT?

Don't worry. Looking at the design trend of BMW, 7, 5GT, X1, I am sure the new 5 won't look better than the E, although the new E itself looks hideous enough.

i just wanted to say to lucifa that the TT v8 that is goin in to the next ML AMG is goin to be a all new 5.0-5.5 liter V8 which will debut in the new CLS AMG so the engine in the E63 AMG is still the same current 6.2 liter engine. and to fastlane, the ML rivals the X5 not the X6 and can u please show me the figures that show it is outselling the ML. that is all

AMGBrabusMercTuners, can you get me the figures that the ML is outselling the X5? Every country i travel to has more X5's on the road. I dont need figure's, i can use my own eye to prove there are more X5's then the ML's. Im a merc fan, but sorry the X5 is miles ahead of the ML in everything, design, techonolgy. What about that ugly GL or GLK? UGLY! I know the X3 is ugly but atleast they have the beauty in the X6, but not lots of people can afford the X6, thats why you dont agree with me. But i can make you change ur mind by making you sit in the x6! :)

I don't have high hopes for this car. Just look at othe M-B 4x4's. And it is too high, even for a SUV. But if they do a ML63 that has an aggresive look like the current one, I'll change my mind.

Long, skinny, with big overhangs. I thought the minivan was out of style? Kids can't look out those high rear windows.

MB does not have ML class so far. What "testing their next generation ML-Class SUV" means?
