When it comes to new, innovative engine developments, I must confess BMW is the king. Mercedes, Audi and even porsche are not even in its league.

"you really thinks so? well you`re wrong!" ... Ugh IDIOT... Gotta love morons that make big claims and support them with NOTHING. I'm not a big BMW fan but just take a look at the Engine of the Year Awards (or Engine Oscars). BMW always does well. http://editorial.autos.msn.com/article.aspx?cp-documentid=511173

I agree 100%, in person this is stunning, and on the pictures is also better than Audi or Mercedes or anything else.

BMW is the Pepsi of the car world, and Mercedes is the Coke. Karl Benz was the first person to make use of the internal combustion engine in a car, therefore there is no other company in the world that has nearly as much experience making engines as Mercedes does. BMW fans consist of young emotional hotheads (like many that have posted messages here) while Mercedes fans tend to be of a more mature and logical crowd. Logically thinking, there is no one company that is way better than its competitors. Todays car market is a very competitive one and leaves no room for any one company to dominate the rest. If someone beleives that their favorite car company is the best or in a "league" of its own, chances are theyre a BMW fan.

I take it you're a Benz or Audi fan, then? But I have to agree, the current market is extremely competitive. The only thing really left to divide the German luxury marques is brand focus -- Benz is the most comfortable, BMW is the best to drive and... well, nobody has yet successfully demonstrated to me an objective reason to support Audi over the other two, but I'm sure there must be one. There's no point for the fanboy wars, the simple fact is those who buy Mercs buy them for love of comfort and those who buy Bimmers buy them for love of driving. So if you are going to say that those who buy BMWs are "emotional young hotheads" you'd accept that those who buy Mercs are sad old hasbeens who need the superb comfort of a Benz to save their tired ageing backs, surely?

It doesn't matter who did this or that but it matters though who masters it and comes on top. Mercedes-Benz are nowhere with engines. BMW alone has won half of all awards and trophies ever in engines' categories. So keep dreaming about who began with this or that and you'll always remain an oldhead.

That 40d engine im guessing is going to be perhaps this decade's most reliable diesel. Inline 6 BMW block + Twin Turbo diesel, not going to give up on you. And 6.3s in a car this big and heavy is pretty darn good with a diesel. I'm wondering how long it will take them to turn that M-Package into an actual M7!

i hope that they produce a 760xi with the m sports package. now that'd cover pretty much all the needs of us in the snow belt that like power.

Youd be correct to assume I'm a Mercedes fan lucifa but I'm still young, and I dont have back problems just yet, but the reason I consider BMW fans hotheads is because of what I experience on the road on a daily basis. I cant count how many times I've had BMW's pull up next to me or right on my ass trying to race me, even though their cars are "best to drive" I always manage to come out on top in "superb comfort". I guess that makes me a happy young champ who needs the comfort of a Benz to preserve his youthful back.

Name for me one engine (let's say 4 litre) for Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Audi, Ferrari or any other make which can compete with the same capacity engine from BMW.

Audi has the 4.2L V8 in the RS4 with 420hp, Porsche has the 435hp 3.8L in the GT3, Ferrari has the 4.3L 510hp in the F430 Scuderia. In the 5-6L engine range Mercedes eats everything, BMW has some of the best engines in the 3-4L range when you exclude supercars like Porsche/Ferrari. But doesn't really offer anything amazing in the 5-6L range, not since the 6L in the McLaren F1.

I am wondering has BMW considered selling the 740d in the USA. I wouldn't be surprised they do that, especially now that BMW has enjoyed success with the 335d and X5 xDrive35d.

I think the four chrome strips (front & back)"highlight" the Sports package and sets off the car rather nicely. I had initial doubts as the car ought to be totally "blacked-out" but the chrome should help it stand out better on the road. It appears to be a wonderfully resolved paradox that the BMW stylists have dealt with.... isaacu

A guy who races with BMW's in "comfort and style" is silently boiling in his blood everytime he sees that blue and white propeller which means "action" while he's stuck with a the three pointed star which means "boredom".

This new 7 series looks great but not as good at the one on tomorrow never dies. But a lot better than the previous generation. Is it just me but are diesels getting more and more appealing?

The ///M-Sport package adds a nice touch of aggressiveness. Yet, it begs the question... Where is the ///M7?
