BMW 7 Series Hybrid Prototype Hits the Ring

BMW 7 Series Hybrid Prototype Hits the Ring
BMW 7-Series Hybrid Prototype / autoscoop.biz / Jensha

A prototype BMW 7-Series Hybrid was spied running around the Nürburgring's Nordschleife. Potential buyers are invited to wait until the end of the year when they will be able to get a hold of their 7 Hybrids. This is quite an important car for BMW as it will fill the same space in the US that luxury diesels occupy in Europe.

Its ActiveHybrid system is to be shared with an X6 Hybrid but differences in architecture will be engineered so that the two systems deliver characteristics that match these two different cars. At the heart is a 4.4-litre twin turbo V8 motor will run alongside an electric unit that builds up 20hp (15kW) and 210Nm of torque. Merge this with the petrol V8's 400hp (294kW) and 610Nm of torque and you have a 420hp (309kW), 820Nm hybrid superlimo. A regenerative braking system will be employed which will assist in cutting fuel consumption by 15% over an equivalent petrol-only car.

The spied unit is not under any type of camouflage so BMW could not care less if it's caught prancing around the ‘Ring. That could only mean that an official reveal is just months if not weeks away. Incidentally the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show is also only about three months away. One plus one...

It's at the same level as the LS600HL, very similar performance. The two even have an uncanny resemblance. Freaky...

Actually I take that back. I thought you meant ahead as car. In terms of hybrid technology, Lexus is way ahead (largely because of Toyota).

20hp From The Electric Motor. I Think This Is a JUST Boarder Line Hybrid. Come On Where Is The Motor From A Strimmer. Totally Agree Lexus is Light Years Ahead. IMHO.

come on , you know this is just a marketing trick for the US market. now you can buy a 7 series and still be trendy because of the Hybrid logo, while enjoying the biturbo engine.

"Lexus" and "performance" do NOT belong on the same line. They make great cars; they are very reliable (not to say BMW isn't), but their subpar performance isn't at the same level as BMW.

BMW is definately a performance driven manufacturer, but these cars don't really focus on that. If BMW made a performance based 7 series, it would not bode well for their main consumer base, which buy the car mainly for its executive factor. Therefore, performance has little say for these cars. To be honest, Lexus definately has a head start on all manufacturers. Toyota has been in the hybrid game much longer, and it is only natural for them to have better developed their hybrid technologies.

The LS600 is a joke. It is the MOST inefficient hybrid EVER. BMW, with its Li-Ion battery pack and small, well-packaged electric motor is a "mild" hybrid for sure, but teamed with realtime data sharing over a FlexRay network...it is unbeatable.

I agree LS600 is a complete joke...the materials they use, the car built very cheap for the price the offering at,ok and the reason why BMW doesnt make a lot of hybrids is because their non hybrid engine is more fuel efficient than a hybrid and just think how efficient the bmw hybrid be :) " Never compare Lexus to a BMW" it is 2 different worlds.. And I'm not saying lexus is a bad car maker, but they can compare maybe to a toyota camry, nissan maxima, accord maybe... believe me even the fiat 500 is better made than any lexus.

In reviewing Automobile Magazine's comparison between the Lexus and forthcoming S-class hybrid, those two cars use hybrid technology for different results. Lexus offers V12 power with the fuel consumption of a V8. The Benz has a 50% increase in fuel efficiency over the S550 V8. If that be a "marketing trick" for the US market, bring on the magic. Yes, the Benz suffers a little in acceleration, but as the magazine points suggests, perhaps the extra second is really just bragging rights. The Benz seems to be a much simpler and more elegant implementation than the Lexus. From the comment of this article, it is hard to say what benefit this BMW receives from hybridization.
