They are calling this a new car but in fact, it looks so similar to an A4 saloon

it's better looking than an A4 i think - better proportions. i don't really see the point of it, but considering that it won't have been too expensive to develop due to platform sharing, maybe it's a sound financial move

I have seen and sat in this vehicle and I can tell all of you that it does not look like a A4 Saloon or Avant at all. It is slightly bigger than an A4 anyway, but sits only 4, so it will make it's own niche and probably not still that many sales from A4 or A6.
As for the A7, it will be much bigger, probably close to the size of the current Gen A8, since the next gen (D4) will grow in size a bit.
As far as the new A6 slatted for 2012, some of you are in for a surprise. LOL

Nice overall shape, although the taillights and front-end treatment will probably be bland, bland, bland. With a shape and practicality being so compelling, one wonders why marketing idiots are remiss to bring the car to the USA. All we get friggin CRAP (SUVs). Makes me want to move to Germany, Italy, or the UK.

Elegent 4 door coupe. Hope they change more to differentiate from the normal A5 though. Bumper and lights looks identical.

Hate to disagree with the others here...but it's boring.
It reminds me of the mazda 626 hatch that my friend used to drive.
It's nothing new and the design language is nothing new either.
After having driven a modern generation Audi on the Autobahn for more than 10 hours I can also say that they are boring and unsettling to drive as well...although the TDI engine I really loved...
Just like women you can't really judge a car until you've lived with one.

It looks a damn sight better than the 5 series GT. Bring on the battle of the German family hatchbacks!

I'm sorry, but I think a sportback/fastback requires a longer bonnet to justify the extended cabin. I think Audi's trying for the Aston Martin look, but coming closer to the Panamera. It's hard to implement four doors and a hatch without altering other areas of the design.
They should raise the suspension, or BMW should lower its 5-series GT's suspension, and we'd have an excellent comparo on our hands. Although the new 5 may be considerably larger than this...
Secondly, why? I thought BMW was the only marque crazy enough to venture into pointless bodystyles. Evidently not. And it's called an 'A5 sportback' rather than an 'A4 Hatchback' to justify what will surely be a huge price premium. Very clever.
Although more clever is the line from the article : 'but can't convince the missus of the importance of a sporty two-door GT to a man's overall wellbeing'
That's awesome! And very true.

Um, why isn't it called an A4 sportback? It is simply an A4 with a smooth hatch door.

It is a nice looking car from Audi again, but then again, they always look the bloody same, A4,A5,Sportback, wheres the originalaty????? Audi make nice cars but u look at the SUV'S, Wagons, Coupes, Cabrios, Limos, whatever, its always the same design behind all of them just with a diferent shape (a bit like Porsche does) so excuse me because i don't mean to offend but.....BORING

The 5er GT and A5 Sportback aren't even the same type of car, it's a senseless comparison. Why are you even bothering?

All I Want To Know Is SPORTBACK A New Name For HATCHBACK. Because That To Me Is A 5 Door Hatchback. Looks Like An Up To Date Austin Princess.
It's Shame Really As All Audi's Are Looking The Same. They Now Tend To Be Boring...

Lol at how it is so very nearly identical to the A4/A4 Avant/A5/A6/A6 Avant... design originality and individuality are very clearly demonstrated here...
June 25, 2009 8:53 am
The styling is not at all surprising but it is nice all the same.

Hoffmeister Kick in Audi? lol! If you cover the front on the main picture this Sportback looks identical to the 5 series GT
June 25, 2009 9:22 am
They shouldn?t call it A5. The only, almost a little diferent model of audi, has now become another one on the list of "look a like".
