The camouflage strip tease continues

Our spy photographers have once again managed to catch Mercedes' new S-Class Coupe undergoing testing in Germany.

Unlike our previous spy photos, these new pictures provide us with our clearest glimpse of the upcoming CL replacement. Up front, the car features a redesigned bumper, an updated grille, new headlights with LED accents, and S-Class inspired horizontal slates in the air intakes. Despite all the camouflage out back, it appears the only change is a minor reshaping of the rear bumper.

Mechanically not much is expected to change, as the current CL's engine lineup will carry over virtually untouched. One notable expectation is the possibility of an S-Class Coupe 400 Hybrid which would feature a 279 hp 3.5-liter V6 engine paired with a 20 hp electric motor.

Like the recently updated 2010 S-Class, the S-Class Coupe will probably feature a major technological overhaul thanks to the addition of a SPLITVIEW monitor, a revised Night View Assist system with pedestrian detection, and an upgraded COMMAND system.

The car looks good, but I don't like new naming ideas for Mercedes coupes. First E-class coupe, now S class coupe? Ugh....

The funny thing about it is that the names that we have seen over the last few years (CL, CLK, etc.) are in fact the "new" names. The company is just going back to a naming convention that is more similar to what was used in the past.

Well, In all fairness, the new E-Class coupe is in reality a C-Class Coupe...

the E class coupe and S class coupe both have been around forever, they just got rid of the names in 1997.

Where is your head? Mercedes will rename the CL into S-Class Coupé, because they are going back to the old naming convention!

Fre3dy and Rangerover.. You haven't thought about that Mercedes might be going back to the old names, like some of the other users wrote earlier?? or WCF just reffering to it as the S-class coupe because it is the s-class as a coupe and always have been that? Take care;)

And it is a very nice car, I just liked the old one with the round headlights better.

Yeah, I think this is just the CL facelift. (Mercedes seems to get a lot of attention for these by WCF.) Thank goodness they aren't going in the direction of the SL's most recent front end facelift.

A hybrid engine would be a nice update.

The thing is that all of you who thinks this is a cl should digg a little deeper. That car on the photos is a lot bigger than the cl cupe.....

since the e-class coupe is based on the c-class platform, the s-class coupe is based on the new e-class platform?

odysseus
June 24, 2009 10:31 AM
Actually it's based on the W221 platform!

Well, it should be good looking after all but i dont get it - why making an S Klass coupe when you have already the CL wich is more or less the same? If they will sell also the S Klasse coupe in the same time with CL what would make the difference for a client to buy one or another? What's wrong with you Merc ??

I always hated the name "cl" for the s-class coupé. glad that they are going back to the classic name.

i wonder if the go back to the "SEC" letters on the trunk, or if the just put an "S" in front of the number. hmmm...

The first S-class coupé (1981) was indeed SEC [S=S-class, E=Petrol engine, C=Coupé] (C126). Before that there were SLC's which were essentially lengthened SL roadsters with a fixed roof and rear seat. The W140 S-class was introduced (-91) and MB changed coupé name to CL in -94 (C140) (W215) (W216) and that it has been since then. I don't know whats gonna happen for the facelift version, but i hope they keep the CL-name.

Jeeez...is it so hard to understand? Along with the facelift, the former CL is renamed S-Class Coupe. No "new model", just a facelift and renaming.

So, to get it clear: CLK -- E-Class Coupe CLS -- to be announced, may keep the CLS-monniker CL -- S-Class Coupe

And the new E-Class Coupe is based on the E-Class, in contrast to the old CLK which was based on the C-Class

Exactly! This means also, that the successor of the CLC is the C-Class Coupé. The new name convention makes it easier for Daimler to announce more variations from one model without confusing the costumers by silly combinations of characters... ;-)

Don't be fooled by the hype, the "E-coupe" is still based on a C-Class. This time its the W204.

wjaprep
June 24, 2009 11:48 PM
the E class coupe is based on the C class, but it's also based on the E class, which is clear when you consider the E550/E500 engine and the interiors.

benz_man
June 26, 2009 7:53 PM
Keyword here being "based". The E-coupe is based on the W204 C-class while also sharing many components with the recently introduced W212 E-class. Just like each CLK before it.

What the hell is wrong with all of you? Mercedes is only doing a few reshapes and technical improvements on the CL and rename it into S-Class Coupé! It's an ordinary facelift!

June 24, 2009 3:45 PM
It'll be harder to pronounce the models, imagin saying S500 coupe, S63 coupe ... feels stupid

I think with the CL it was better and i liked these two letters it suit the coupe

I like the new type of naming. Like E-Class and E-Class Coupe, now S-Class and S-Class Coupe. It's more simple then CLK, GL, G, ML and MLK (just for example), but CL is a big name and it will be sad loss. So I don't care how MB will continue to name their cars.

i just hope they make a a C class coupe too. and i dont mean the CLC.
