F1 Tensions Continue to Rise as Mosley Fears for Job
Max Mosley

Max Mosley has dismissed as a joke his reference to some members of the FOTA teams alliance as 'loonies'.

With tensions already high between the group and the FIA president, Toyota's John Howett on Sunday said the Mosley jibe was "unhelpful" and "unnecessary".

Mosley had also said Flavio Briatore "sees himself as the Bernie" of a breakaway series, to which the Renault boss replied: "I never get personal. Max should stop insulting people".

It is suggested that the 'loonies' dig was also directed towards Ferrari's Luca di Montezemolo: "Montezemolo and I have known each other nearly 40 years and I get along with him fine on a personal level," Mosley said.

"Flavio is great on a personal level but obviously sometimes when you have got something as complex as formula one, you can have disagreements about how things operate within the sport. But on a personal basis we've always got along fine."

Mosley explained that he travelled to the Silverstone circuit on Sunday in Briatore's own helicopter.

He said the 'loonies' label referred to those FOTA members who are presently not willing to discuss a solution, while others in the alliance "are the moderates who want to talk".

"It's more of a jokey reference than anything else. I don't think they are literally loonies, but I think they are a little bit immoderate in their approach," said Mosley.

It is believed the softening of Mosley's stance on Sunday, including vowing to drop the legal action against Ferrari and FOTA and suggesting peace is near, may be a reaction to rumours that a vote to expel him may be called for at Wednesday's World Motor Sport Council.

Bernie Ecclestone confirmed he is desperate to see the situation resolved.

"I have given 35 years of my life and more to formula one," said the 78-year-old. "My marriage broke up because of formula one. So I am sure as hell not going to let things disintegrate over what is, in the end, basically nothing."

If a solution is not found, he doubts anyone would have the time or money to establish a breakaway series.

"If that (series) started, everybody would be suing everybody else and there would be no other series. There would be nothing. Everyone would spend a fortune on lawyers and nothing will happen," said Ecclestone.

Thank God that Max & Bernie have finally realised that they cannot dictate terms to the teams anymore. For the teams to remain in F1 now, both these old goats will have to make amends & stop talking thrash. Bend over backwards is the most likely option for these 2 'Loonies'

If Max were wise he would offer to step aside. I think people would even be willing to pay him for a time as long as he goes away.

Fvck the Spank and the Dwarf, I hope the Fota breakaway goes ahead, but I suspect that F1 will still be intact next year.

As if Max is going to step aside quietly. That mofo needs to be kicked out and dragged around by every car on the grid.

I think the only way that F1 can survive as F1, is to have the FIA abolished as the rulemakers (be that Max Mosley or anyone else), Bernie Ecclestone to either get booted or being so money-hungry, and lastly the prices for a) tickets, b) television rights and c) the amount venues have to fork out to be able to host events to DRASTICALLY drop... Why is there talks of capping team budgets to 40m. (which will cost a lot of people jobs I'd imagine) when we, the fans, still have to pay an arm and a leg at venues we don't have easy access to (and why the hell is there NO race on the African continent any more)??? It's that time folks. F1 needs to either shape up or ship out.

funny nazi orgie mosley, he keeps on talking about budget cut yet keep on introducing new rules that needs millions in R&D all the time due to competitiveness. i heard KERS cost so much for the teams to develope and adopt it into the chassis design yet the car is still unbalance and needs more development. imagine this for the budget teams.

This makes it so obvious, 35 years on and Bernie is a billionaire and totally infamous. He is packing in the money and killing F1 teams for a buck.

as for mosley, using words like 'loony' or 'loonies' and completely active in racist orgies shows where F1 is heading.

Know what- there already IS a formula with identical cars, and budgets- its called A1, why on EARTH would F1 be striving to catch up with that principle, when A1 is ranked below F1... Also- all their cars (both A and F) look too much like a... R8!!!

"It's more of a jokey reference than anything else. I don't think they are literally loonies, but I think they are a little bit immoderate in their approach". It says it all, when ruler imposing rules considers himself to be Moderate, and any dissenting entity to be Immoderate, you'd better leave before boundaries are closed and hermetic, 'cause dictatorship rises. If there is a need for budget cap, it is Max' & Bernie's income. Could you believe they earn more than what they want F1 teams to spend!!!
