FIA unmoved by teams' breakaway plans

FIA unmoved by teams breakaway plans
Max Mosley

Early on Friday morning, the FIA issued a statement insisting it is unmoved by eight major formula one teams' plans to set up a rival series.

The Paris body, led by its controversial president Max Mosley, said it is "disappointed but not surprised" that the protracted negotiations about income, governance and rules ultimately failed.

"The FIA cannot permit a financial arms race in the championship nor can the FIA allow FOTA to dictate the rules of formula one," part of the statement read.

The FIA said Friday's deadline for five FOTA teams to unconditionally sign up for the 2010 season stands, and that a definitive entry list will be published on Saturday.

Due to disputed agreements, it is likely that Ferrari and the Red Bull teams will again be included on the entry list against their will.

F1 team chiefs met on Thursday night at Renault's Enstone headquarters, and issued its statement about a breakaway championship around midnight.

"The FIA is disappointed but not surprised by FOTA's inability to reach a compromise in the best interests of the sport," the FIA continued.

"It is clear that elements within FOTA have sought this outcome throughout the prolonged period of negotiation and have not engaged in the discussions in good faith."

How sad that two people, Max and Bernie, have essentially ruined Formula 1. I am fully behind FOTA and hope they will bring F1 back to North America.

This whole dispute is just one bluff after another. The FIA is "unmoved"?? I call BS. Their series is falling out from under their feet and they aren't worried about it? Yeah.... Right. I'm with FOTA; I wouldn't want to deal with these stubborn SOBs either

The FOTA has my full backing and the new Championship series is going to eclipse F1 by far! Its the new Pinnacle of Motorsport! FOTA has all the major teams, while FIA only has Williams and Force India, there are chances that some more teams might acually pull out of F1. So whats Max and Bernie going to do? Have a championship with two Teams?

The breakaway FOTA decision is the best open wheeler racing news in a long time ... let the two F1 dictators take their second rate teams on tour and hopefully LOSE a truckload os money in the process ... I'm looking forward to a fresh competition in a the way the Olympics were renewed and revitilised when the dictator J.A. Samaranch was deposed in a similar bloodless coup ... BRING IT ON IN 2010

Max and Bernie are CLOWNS!!!, let's forget about them and their CIRCUS F1! Let's talk about the new series! What's it going to be called, are they going to merge with Le Mans or Moto GP as reported earlier? Any chance of a return to the better looking cars of 2008 and dumping of KERS and these hideous new tall rear wings and long front wings ?

"Best interests of the Sport" "Disappointed, but not surprised" Sounds like they made and designed the sport. I think the participants and the hardworking teams, fans make the sport "The FIA cannot permit a financial arms race in the championship nor can the FIA allow FOTA to dictate the rules of formula one," part of the statement read." What does that mean??

let's not forget that the FIA preach cost cutting - then charge ludicrous 'license fees' to drivers... i wish the drivers had the balls to boycott earlier in the year. fia got drivers offside from the start so good riddance. 'nor can the FIA allow FOTA to dictate the rules of formula one,"... well FOTA can't allow a nazi to dictate to them either... mosley should watch my name is earl - do bad things: bad things happen. this mess is entirely a result of mosely. everyone hates bernie but he brought money to the sport and hate him or hate him, he did pull f1 back from near financial ruin. wht has mosely done for f1???

I call BS... Max, and Bernie for that matter, if they have any sense about them, must be close to crapping their pants. You don't cut your cash-cows' throats and simply be 'unmoved'. EDIT: Actually what Lemon said already. But nevertheless, I call BS too!!! :)

I agree with Mosley, the FOTA shouldn't dictate the rules of F1. They also don't have to participate and they can take thier cars, drivers and money somewhere else and do what they want with it. When a series splits, even if it's F1, everyone suffers. In 10 to 15 years from now they'll all be back together...just like CART & IndyCar.

I'm glad...I hope F1 sinks in the mud, not that I like FOTA any more than F1. I think the whole sport stinks, despite the great entertainment value and exciting cars. F1 has become an ugly monster...reserved for only the rich, and nothing of what F1 stood for remains (from the good old days). Its all about the money, the greed and the overinflated egos. And the FOTA teams are just as bad considering they want to keep their high budgets which are ridiculous in this day and age. Die a painful death F1, please and thank you!

Mosley is iron man, we know. Ludicrous hero who reminds me Brezhnev and USSR with his arms race. It is doubtful that F1 can be cheaper than football (soccer)but it is not just money problem, it is about power I'm afraid.

f1 is nothing without the teams that are breaking away (ferrari, mclaren, redbull, brawn, renalut, rosso) they have the whole fan base of the f1 if they make a new gp serries it would be as if the fia gp serries dose't exist. mosley is makeing him self look stupid by saying the fia is unmoved, i hope this is the end of the fia.

yeah - i've been to melb gr 3 times and the amount of italian influence and ferrari colors is incredible - plus webber is aussie... bernie has driven appearance fee so high it runs at a LOSS every year, subsidised by govt. simple equation - remove 95% fans... lose 95% gate entrance fees. the only positive is it might be 'turn up at the gate for free'

There will be an injunction that will stop Ferrari and the Red Bull teams from racing in any other series, while they are under contract and they will loose huge amounts of money in fines. They will be charged with trying to steal the rights that Bernie owns. That will shut those teams down. The other non contracted FOTA teams will be free to race, but the billion ? prize fund which helps to finance the teams will not be in place which means the smaller teams will have smaller budgets again. Force India were saying they couldn't race without the critical funds from the Bernie. That will leave a ten car grid in the new series with no prize money... it can work, but it's not going to be easy for them as neither series is going to be able to command the high rights payments that Bernie has spent decades setting in place and the smaller teams won't have any help to be competitive against the big FOTA teams. Probably it will completely destroy itself. That's why Bernie can smile and joke still...

there is no way ferrari's agreement has no get out clauses. remember it was drafted during previous attempt to have alternate series with ferrari as powerholders at negotiations. either way there will be bitter court battles - further showing that f1 is about bernie's commercial success first and foremost...

I read the following article mentioned by daviepops above. http://en.f1-live.com/f1/en/headlines/news/detail/090619220453.shtml. My most memorable takeaway from the article is the following excerpt: "The series would return to its roots with teams that only exist for racing competing for top honours and perhaps arguably, less of a major marketing exercise for the car giants." F1 will hopefully return to the [not so long ago] good ole days. Don't get me wrong, nobody loves more than me, 'the most cutting edge technology that money can buy', but the escalating "ultra high budgets" is squeezing out many teams/suppliers. Something has to give. How can an $80M private team compete with a Ferrari with an unlimited budget, though estimated at $400M/yr? I think the breakaway is a great idea, and I'll follow them if/when it comes about, but the more affordable F1 is really going to be great (as long as the FIA doesn't stick their nose too far in it). Just think, we might see the re-emergence of some of the great car teams like Lotus, Lambo, Aston Martin, Masareti, etc. Let the big boys take their $200M wind tunnels and go play in an other series. Let F1 get back to the days when great race car engineers like Colin Chapman and Gordon Murray, scratched their great idea's on a garage wall or sketched it on the back of a bar napkin over a couple of pints. Just one man's opinion.

Colin Chapman and Gordon Murray were innovative, F1 today is totally anti innovation, stupid.

I don't like F1 and I don't like Fota. Mosely and Bernie should go. However there should be a budget limit on what these teams can spend. I thought it was sad when team Lotus,BRM etc had to pull out because they were not financially competative. All teams should be able to do a competative car within the same financial means. Invovation should not cost an arm and a leg. Lotus was very inovative within a tight budget.I miss the olden days when F1 was about manual gear boxes and no launch control. Drivers made do with what they had and won on shear talent. The idea that smaller teams can compete to me is a plus. In the olden days the drivers were more flamboyent, there were more interesting tracks.Frankly I've F1 returns to America I'd run it at Laguna Seca. But I'm "old school". I think nascar should return to the "beach" at Daytona.

if the F1 teams decide to run their own series then there will be less politics and more racing. it cannot get any worse than what it is now. nazi orgie and greedy monkey circus is coming to a close, thankfully.

At least Danica will be able to get an F1 ride now. Sebastian Bourdais must be upset he is right back were he started, FIA's version of champ car.
