In the dead of Thursday night in England, the eight FOTA teams decided to issue a statement announcing that a breakaway world championship will be formed.

The announcement came on the eve of the FIA's Friday deadline for making unconditional entries for the official formula one series, and amid the sides' deadlocked negotiations about income, governance and rules.

"The FIA and the commercial rights holder have campaigned to divide FOTA," the statement read. "The wishes of the majority of the teams are ignored.

"Furthermore, tens of millions of dollars have been withheld from many teams by the commercial rights holder, going back as far as 2006."

The statement was issued on behalf of BMW, Brawn, Ferrari, McLaren, Renault, Toyota and the two Red Bull teams.

"These teams therefore have no alternative other than to commence the preparation for a new championship which reflects the values of its participants and partners," said the formula one teams association.

The details of the new series, including a name, circuits and starting year, have not yet been announced. At present its grid would feature 16 cars, unless the eight involved teams each field three drivers.

FOTA said: "This series will have transparent governance, one set of regulations, encourage more entrants and listen to the wishes of the fans, including offering lower prices for spectators worldwide, partners and other important stakeholders.

"The major drivers, stars, brands, sponsors, promoters and companies historically associated with the highest level of motorsport will all feature in this new series."

The formation of the series will spark more political turmoil, especially given that Ferrari and the Red Bull teams were unconditionally included on the FIA's entry list, due to disputed agreements with the F1 ruling bodies.

It is therefore likely that Ferrari's name will feature above the garages at Albert Park next year, while the famous Italian team races elsewhere.

F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone, whose Formula One Management is contracted to and aligned with the FIA and Max Mosley, has already vowed to legally challenge the defection of teams, and any attempts to negotiate with his contracted promoters and TV broadcasters.

The inclusion on the breakaway series of loved venues including Monaco, Spa and Monza will therefore be contested, while FOTA's plans do not involve the successful British team and expelled FOTA member Williams, which like Force India is committed to the FIA championship next year.

this will be a great few months - for the lawyers anyway.

about time bernie's arrogance cost him. there's a saying that he has ignored - don't bite the hand that feeds you. where will F1 be without ferrari, mclaren, bmw, etc. answer: look at all the gp3 teams climbing over each other for cheap f1 racing.

This should be good... Watching Bernie and Mad Max try to run a championship with 2 teams, while the 8 biggest teams steal away the crowds, venues, sponsoe, and mostly the CASH!

This is wonderful! Max and Bernie are really choking on their tee today I'm sure :)

Interestingly, not a word of this on f1.com, suppose they're all still too much in "...oh shi..." mode to react?

Continuing with Bernie & Co. would have resulted in a major drawback for all the technology involved. Where is the progress if the teams are restricted to use all their money and capabilities? Formula 1 means cutting edge innovation; and as for the new championship? I'm sure they will find the perfect solution in no time.

In the words of Donald Trump: Bernie, Max "YOU'RE FIRED"

There are some circuits thay can already start working with: all the ones that have been recently withdrawn by FIA because they are not fancy/expensive enough or too far from major cities according to them like Siverstone, Magnycours, Imola, Montreal, A1 Ring, Interlagos... who will be happy to have "revenge" against FIA. They can also work with circuits that only have one venue every 2 years (Japan, Germany).

Furthermore this breakaway anouncement will probably give a "cold" to circuits in development (Paris, India, Korea).

This news was somewhat expected. Teams object to the cap mainly because their current budgets was too much of a leap to the proposed 40 mill cap. Currently, teams are spending 200 - 120 mill.

Hold your horses friends! There is a big margin of difference between the bravado of a press release on the eve of a negotiating deadline and seeing a full series underway. This could not yet happen because of the effort involved; that's before the lawyers sink their teeth into this. I am quite sure there would have been exclusivity clauses in the team and track contracts which will make supporting a breakaway series tough to do contractually.

If it does happen though, there may be a place on the grid for the 8 or so teams that didn't make it as new entrants in the FIA/FOM series, including Prodrive/Aston.

Fully support FOTA decision. Those two aged men (with senile decay) have done all their best to annihilate and trample Formula 1! But now the teams can get all money they earn. They may return to America, Canada,Silverstone and other tracks. And not change rules every year. Probably Michelin may return...

This is excellent news, better racing and more innovation. FOTA is really thinking about the fans and that's were the bottom line rests. The legal fights will be big but we all support FOTA and I am glad they've made this decision.

I absolutely agree with the FOTA´s decision to breakaway from F1. However I agree with Bristol411S3 because it takes hardwork to go from a Press Release to ´the real thing´... not impossible but a lot of hardwork on various issues: legal battle against F1 (who might go to Courts to impeach the New Series) + logistics + rules + homologation (if FIA´s responsible to provide licensing to Circuits and Race Licenses to Pilots who will the New Series overcome that?), etc. Finally, if the New Series becomes reality FOTA has to change their name - from Formula One Teams Association to another acronym - maybe FXTA - Formula X Teams Association! :-) Obrigado

on the FIA's responsibility - what is stopping a breakaway from having their own licencing for circuits and drivers? Their own homologation? Surely they have enough knowledge, technology and manpower to create their own niche!!

"The major drivers, stars, brands, sponsors, promoters and companies historically associated with the highest level of motorsport will all feature in this new series."

Good!! All of the F1 goodies will be around in the new series. I'm so glad FOTA finally told the old reactionary dudes to shove their budget caps up their butts.

Oh what took so long. Haleluja. I am 100% going to follow a proper championship with manufactures battling it to see who is best. GO GO GO FOTA.

Make sure Bernie and FIA are nowhere near!!! Only they can screw up a sucesshul formula.

Tanya99 ... good point on tyres .... perhaps all the big tyre names will get a look in!! The tyre war's of old!!! New series, new sponsors, new venues, new teams (hopefully), affordable tickets - I may just have to become a fan again!!! A sport is about the fans and the participants, not the administration!!
