Audi has announced new details regarding their upcoming BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo competitor, the A5 Sportback.

Designed to be as "emotional and elegant as a coupe, as comfortable as a sedan, and as practical as an Avant", the A5 Sportback is essentially a five-door coupe. Although the teaser video only shows an artist stretching the A5 Sportback's design, Audi states that the new model features a large rear hatch, a graceful tapering roofline which is 36 mm (1.4") lower than the A4 Sedan's, and four frameless doors with "dynamic window styling".

In terms of practicality, Audi has informed us that the new A5 Sportback offers 480 liters (17.0 cubic feet) of cargo capacity and 980 liters (34.6 cubic feet) when the rear seats are folded down.

At launch, the A5 Sportback will be offered with three diesels and two petrol engines. Diesel versions include the 2.0 TDI with 125 kW (170 hp) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque, a 2.7 TDI with 140 kW (190 hp) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft), and a 3.0-liter V6 TDI with 176 kW (240 hp) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) torque. On the petrol side, potential owners can select a 2.0 TFSI quattro with 155 kW (211 hp) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque or a more powerful 3.2-liter V6 quattro with 195 kW (265 hp).

Performance options include a newly developed ESP system with an electronic differential lock for improved steering response, Audi drive select, adaptive shock absorbers, and dynamic steering with continuously variable assistance.

Look for the new A5 to start arriving in European showrooms this September with a base price of €36,050.

Press Release (Click to expand)

The brand with the four rings leads the pack with a new vehicle concept: The Audi A5 Sportback combines the best of different automotive worlds. It is as emotional and elegant as a coupe, as comfortable as a sedan, and as practical as an Avant. The Sportback joins the Coupé and Cabriolet as the third member of the A5 model family – and at the same time creates a new segment. With an exciting design, great everyday utility and highly efficient and powerful TFSI, FSI and TDI engines, the A5 Sportback will arrive at Audi dealerships in September. The car will be open for ordering with an entry price of EUR 36,050 for the 2.0 TDI version. A version with an even more attractive price will follow in the middle of 2010. This will make the A5 Sportback the entry model for the A5 model range.

The A5 Sportback represents a milestone in car design. The five-door coupe excels in its elegant, elongated, sporty profile. The large hatchback fits perfectly into the tail-end styling. The spoiler lip and the diffuser insert provide contrast and emphasize the athletic tautness of the elongated contour. The coupe-like silhouette is the result of a roof section with a long, tapering roofline that is moderately lower by 36 mm (1.42 inches) than the A4 Sedan and of the short overhangs at the front and rear as well as the long wheelbase of 2,810 mm (9.22 feet) and the four frameless doors with their slim, dynamic window styling. The unusual hatchback design is distinctively emblematic of the vehicle’s excellent functionality. With the Sportback, the designers of the Avant are setting trends in tail-end design while combining sportiness, comfort and utility in a completely new way.

The unique functional concept in conjunction with the emotion-packed design creates a cutting-edge mix of coupe and Avant. The baggage volume of 480 liters (17.0 cubic feet) nearly equals that of the A4 Avant, and it has an impressive 980 liters (34.6 cubic feet) with the rear seatbacks folded down.

The A5 Sportback provides a full measure of comfort on all four seats and convenient entry and exit through every door. Despite the fact that its exterior height is less than that of the A4 Sedan and that its roof tapers at the rear, the Sportback has comparable headroom and legroom.

The powerplant of the A5 Sportback is another advance along the path of innovative technologies Audi has been charting: All engines are of the direct injection type – the diesel versions are sophisticated common rail TDI units while the gasoline engines are based on the FSI concept. All engines meet the EU5 exhaust emission standard. The diesel versions are equipped with particulate filters.

Initially the A5 Sportback will be available with a choice of two gasoline and three diesel engines. The two gasoline versions, the 2.0 TFSI quattro with an output of 155 kW (211 hp) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque and the 3.2-liter V6 quattro generating 195 kW (265 hp) are both equipped with the Audi valvelift system. This feature can produce more power and higher torque as well as lower fuel consumption.

The following engines are also available right from the start: the 2.0 TDI with 125 kW (170 hp), 350 Nm (258 lb-ft), a 6-speed manual gearbox and start/stop system, the 2.7 TDI with 140 kW (190 hp) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft), and the three-liter V6 TDI with 176 kW (240 hp) plus an enormous 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of maximum torque and quattro all-wheel drive.

The newly developed ESP control with electronic differential lock on the front axle ensures noticeably improved steering response as on the Coupé and Cabriolet and compensates effectively for change-of-load reactions - which increases driving safety.

The perfect addition to this technology package is the Audi drive select dynamic driving system – this allows the driver to choose between three different modes which influences the throttle response characteristics, the shift points for the seven-speed S tronic or multitronic transmissions, and supports the servotronic steering. If the vehicle is equipped with the MMI operating system, a fourth, freely programmable level is also available.

Audi drive select can only be ordered in conjunction with one or more of three additional technologies – adaptive shock absorber control, dynamic steering with continuously variable assistance and quattro with sport differential for the 3.0 TDI and 3.2 FSI versions.

completely different segment to a 5 series gt, but i get the feeling this will end up looking like an a6 replacement as opposed to a cls competitor.

That's because A5 is NOT a CLS competitor. A7 will be a CLS competitor, not A5.

The 5-series GT competes with SUVs and vans, and not with a A5/A7 sportback, CLS or Panamera. Perhaps the name "GT" is somewhat missleading...

The true competitor in this 4-door coupe segment from BMW was the CSL. But its development has been frozen. Unfortunately.

Its sleeker because it will have a 1.4 inch lower roofline than the A4 sedan (less headroom).

The 5-series GT is more of an MPV (its roomier than the 5-series sedan) disguised to look like a 5-door sports saloon.

The 1st gen CLS is for old men and it looks dated already. The recent Mercs ages pretty fast as they change design directions constantly.

So the word "coupe" has been redefined as meaning "hatchback"?

Mercedes called the C class hatchback a "C Coupe."

yea... audi won't look dated coz all their cars look like the same shxt all the time...

maybe it's still bearable for consumers now.... but after 2 - 3 years when we all see audi just coming out 'new' cars with the same design... people eventually will get tired of it and walk away... me being 1 of the people who got tired of audi 3 years ago already... and nothing has changed since then... it is selling well now because it is just an affordable german car... but there is nothing worth mentioning about their designs..

u can see how many highend priced audi on the roads... i have rarely seen any rs6 or r8 or a8.... 99% audi i see on the roads are a1,2,3,4 or whatever it is.. they are just good for consumers who looking for cheap alternatives and i don't think mercedes or bmw care too much to fight with them in the low end market..

Look at BMW, in the 1990's most of their cars shared a very similar design language, but it was very appealing and is probably one of the factors that has helped them get where they are today. Unfortunately, they decided to differentiate their designs from attractive to atrocious (as of now) and they are now easily being outdone by Audi in every design perspective. Audi has similar design philosophy throughout their model range, but it is an attractive one and it's likely one of the reasons they are so popular today. I hope they have seen what’s happened to BMW, we can only hope that they don't share the same fate.

I am excited every time when BMW releases a new car!! I like different cars have different character and style!! Audi .... just boring and you can expect what they are going to make! I bet everyone whom can draw will be able to stretch the A5 sportback. There is not much new ideas, just re-stretch the A5 anyway!!

June 18, 2009 11:25 AM
The A5 Sportback is literally a stretched A5 coupe, and it looks great. What is there to get excited about with new BMW designs? They just get worse each time, look at the 5 series GT, X6, 7 series, 3 series.... the list goes on, and extends almost entirely into their model range. I really do beleive that they make the worst looking cars on the market.

Fatty, first off the A3 is a far superior car to the 1 Series and A-Class. Also, why is everyone kicking off, it's nothing new: Audi's design strategy has always been evolutionary rather than revolutionary; premium consumers don't want a gimic or a fad like Bangle-styled BMWs or open wide Peugeots. In this uncertain economic time, the guaranteed predictability of an Audi is very appealing to many consumers; just look at the sales figures.

I think that it is a shame they are using the A5, they should of left it and used it either put it under the A6 or A4 name insted, becuase tha A5 is a coupe. I have nothing against this type of car i think that they are cool. They are just using the wrong name.

What the hell is this? A sportback is sort of a stationcar. I'm ammazed, the audi A7 is pointless now. It looks good, but on every audi the shape of the headlights is the same, only the lamps inside it are differently placed

is it a bmw 5gt rival or bmw m6?

catchmyshadow
June 18, 2009 5:48 PM
it is a 3-series GT rival, which comes out soon. the upcoming A7 is a rival to the 5-series GT. Maybe we will see an Audi rival to the 6-series in the future on the platform of the A7

This is so boring. Audi really have no imagination, all there cars have the same bumper, lights etc but with a stretched or shortened body! At least BMW & Mercedes step outside the box with their designs

June 18, 2009 11:28 AM
Yes, "step outside the box"... and they fail continuously.

June 18, 2009 1:31 AM
boring? Audis are a pleasure to the eye. no need to be revolutionary. soft evolution is their winning principle and it works.`never change a winning team`

June 18, 2009 11:30 AM
Exactly, thats like saying that all Aston Martins have the same styling and are therefore boring/unimaginative. Some people really don't have a clue.

lucifa
June 18, 2009 12:57 PM
I would say that the Astons have become boring/unimaginative. Look at the Rapide -- good-looking, yes, but not exactly original or interesting in any way; it's just a DB9 with another pair of doors wedged in the middle. Same problem with Audis. You can liken BMW to Salvador Dali and Audi to that artist who painted a canvas white. Even though many people would argue the white is ultimately better looking, I'd much rather the Dali -- something interesting with a bit of character.

catchmyshadow
June 18, 2009 5:41 PM
u are rite about AM and Audi having the same slowly evolving design philosophy but the difference is: if u buy an AM for a 200K Euro u want something special, so i think a Rapide, which is simply a stretched DB9, has more of an identity crisis than a A5-Sportback which costs 1/6 and is just a nice variety of the A4 model.

June 19, 2009 1:58 AM
It looks nice...Audi certainly make cars that are pleasing to the eyes...but after having driven an A5 on the Autobahn from Frankfurt to Graz, Austria yesterday I can't say the same for the way they drive.

It could've been that there was something wrong with the car that I was driving, but the A5 was twitchy and very nerve wracking on the Autobahn...above 160kph it started straying off line and I felt significant frontal lift...the C180 Wagon that I am renting for the week is much more pleasant confidence inducing to drive...

it is simply a more dynamic looking A4 with a hatch

TheAlchemist
June 18, 2009 7:34 PM
Why does everything have to be in a "class?" Can you name all the automotive classes right now anyway? Can't an artist just paint a picture for others to enjoy, or not to enjoy. If you build it they will come, right?

it looks nothing like the Hofmeister Kink, besides, I didn't said it's a competitor to the 5 series GT, I just said that it looks miles better. I compare them because they are both new and both try to imitate a coupe body.
