completely different segment to a 5 series gt, but i get the feeling this will end up looking like an a6 replacement as opposed to a cls competitor.

That's because A5 is NOT a CLS competitor. A7 will be a CLS competitor, not A5.

The 5-series GT competes with SUVs and vans, and not with a A5/A7 sportback, CLS or Panamera. Perhaps the name "GT" is somewhat missleading...
The true competitor in this 4-door coupe segment from BMW was the CSL. But its development has been frozen. Unfortunately.

Its sleeker because it will have a 1.4 inch lower roofline than the A4 sedan (less headroom).
The 5-series GT is more of an MPV (its roomier than the 5-series sedan) disguised to look like a 5-door sports saloon.

The Mercedes CLS is sooooo much better looking!

The 1st gen CLS is for old men and it looks dated already. The recent Mercs ages pretty fast as they change design directions constantly.
June 17, 2009 8:58 am
yea... audi won't look dated coz all their cars look like the same shxt all the time...

maybe it's still bearable for consumers now.... but after 2 - 3 years when we all see audi just coming out 'new' cars with the same design... people eventually will get tired of it and walk away... me being 1 of the people who got tired of audi 3 years ago already... and nothing has changed since then... it is selling well now because it is just an affordable german car... but there is nothing worth mentioning about their designs..

u can see how many highend priced audi on the roads... i have rarely seen any rs6 or r8 or a8.... 99% audi i see on the roads are a1,2,3,4 or whatever it is.. they are just good for consumers who looking for cheap alternatives and i don't think mercedes or bmw care too much to fight with them in the low end market..

Look at BMW, in the 1990's most of their cars shared a very similar design language, but it was very appealing and is probably one of the factors that has helped them get where they are today. Unfortunately, they decided to differentiate their designs from attractive to atrocious (as of now) and they are now easily being outdone by Audi in every design perspective. Audi has similar design philosophy throughout their model range, but it is an attractive one and it's likely one of the reasons they are so popular today. I hope they have seen what?s happened to BMW, we can only hope that they don't share the same fate.

I am excited every time when BMW releases a new car!! I like different cars have different character and style!! Audi .... just boring and you can expect what they are going to make! I bet everyone whom can draw will be able to stretch the A5 sportback. There is not much new ideas, just re-stretch the A5 anyway!!

The A5 Sportback is literally a stretched A5 coupe, and it looks great. What is there to get excited about with new BMW designs? They just get worse each time, look at the 5 series GT, X6, 7 series, 3 series.... the list goes on, and extends almost entirely into their model range. I really do beleive that they make the worst looking cars on the market.

Fatty, first off the A3 is a far superior car to the 1 Series and A-Class.
Also, why is everyone kicking off, it's nothing new: Audi's design strategy has always been evolutionary rather than revolutionary; premium consumers don't want a gimic or a fad like Bangle-styled BMWs or open wide Peugeots.
In this uncertain economic time, the guaranteed predictability of an Audi is very appealing to many consumers; just look at the sales figures.

I love it when people buy a VW golf for 2 or 3k extra and then pretend it as a good as a real premium cars ;-)

excellent work. but i will wait till the A7 sportback comes out next year. that should be huge and very impressive on the road.
June 17, 2009 10:53 am
I think that it is a shame they are using the A5, they should of left it and used it either put it under the A6 or A4 name insted, becuase tha A5 is a coupe. I have nothing against this type of car i think that they are cool. They are just using the wrong name.
June 17, 2009 11:27 am
It is so smooth! I bet skateboarders are going to use this car as a ramp.
June 17, 2009 3:00 pm
What the hell is this? A sportback is sort of a stationcar. I'm ammazed, the audi A7 is pointless now. It looks good, but on every audi the shape of the headlights is the same, only the lamps inside it are differently placed
June 17, 2009 3:32 pm
it is a 3-series GT rival, which comes out soon.
the upcoming A7 is a rival to the 5-series GT.
Maybe we will see an Audi rival to the 6-series in the future on the platform of the A7
June 18, 2009 1:48 pm
This is so boring. Audi really have no imagination, all there cars have the same bumper, lights etc but with a stretched or shortened body! At least BMW & Mercedes step outside the box with their designs
June 17, 2009 8:48 pm
boring? Audis are a pleasure to the eye. no need to be revolutionary. soft evolution is their winning principle and it works.`never change a winning team`
June 17, 2009 9:31 pm
Exactly, thats like saying that all Aston Martins have the same styling and are therefore boring/unimaginative. Some people really don't have a clue.
June 18, 2009 7:30 am
I would say that the Astons have become boring/unimaginative. Look at the Rapide -- good-looking, yes, but not exactly original or interesting in any way; it's just a DB9 with another pair of doors wedged in the middle. Same problem with Audis. You can liken BMW to Salvador Dali and Audi to that artist who painted a canvas white. Even though many people would argue the white is ultimately better looking, I'd much rather the Dali -- something interesting with a bit of character.
June 18, 2009 8:57 am
u are rite about AM and Audi having the same slowly evolving design philosophy but the difference is: if u buy an AM for a 200K Euro u want something special, so i think a Rapide, which is simply a stretched DB9, has more of an identity crisis than a A5-Sportback which costs 1/6 and is just a nice variety of the A4 model.
June 18, 2009 1:41 pm
Huh I get the feeling car manifacturers are starting to compete between their own models...
